The citizenM Chicago Downtown hotel is often celebrated for its modern, artsy vibe and high-tech rooms that provide a unique and stylish stay. Cleanliness is a high point, with guests consistently noting the spotless environment despite the rooms being on the smaller side. While the room size and privacy have been a concern for some, the central location is a major draw, making it a convenient base for city exploration.
Service at citizenM is generally well-regarded, with staff members receiving compliments for their friendliness and helpfulness. Amenities are modern and tech-savvy, though guests have suggested an improvement in the number of outlets and bed size. Overall, the hotel offers a blend of contemporary luxury and value, with varying opinions on the cost relative to room size and amenities.

Detailed Reviews
Small room, hot water in shower wasn’t very warm climate control seemed off either to hot/cold. After trying to check in multiple times finally got help of a person.
Small coffee maker in room would be nice as everything in bar area costs regular coffee over $3.00.
Bring snack and breakfast items as breakfast costs around $20.00.
Walking distance to many local attractions, ambassador believe his name is Julian was very kind and helpful.
Definitely not a place that would be kid friendly as there isn’t room.

Trip was very good. Check in process was not hard at all. I felt extra safe with room key elevator access and the lighting and controlled curtains were very cool. The check out process was the easiest check out process i have ever had. Loved overall stay.

Great location and very friendly staff. The rooms were small and compact but everything was like brand new and super clean. The canteen area staff were friendly and although the food selection is appetizers only what we had was good. The bottled water was $7 for a small glass bottle and we needed a bottle opener to open. Not convenient to take to your room at all. The bathroom also doesn’t get warm. Those however are my only two complaints. Parking is within a block of so of the hotel. Super easy to Catch an Uber from the hotel or there is tons of stuff within walking distance. It’s a different kind of hotel experience for sure but everything was nice and definitely worth the price. The hotel is also very quiet as rooms are set up for two people. We had a street view room and the windows block out the noise. The terrace on the 4th floor is amazing to catch some great city views.

THe hotel is very modern, clever, and has a lot of things going for it, like their public spaces. My main complaint was that the rooms were tiny (literally as wide as the length of the bed) and felt overpriced to me on that basis. That said, there was a certain charm to it, the people and the vibe were nice. I stayed during a trade show so surely the rates had been bumped up for that time period - at a lower rate I might stay there again due to convenient location and the various positives I felt about it. BReakast also was a mixed bag. Some good quality (like all-butter croissants) but limited variety (no hot cereal, for examaple).

citizen Stephen, Thank you so much for taking the time for this feedback. It seems like our concept was definitely something new for you. First off, thank you so much for trusting us and stepping outside of your comfort zone. You tried something new and found the silver linings. While the areas you mentioned that were not to your liking, those are items that we believe in, and want all mobile citizens to try. Look in your inbox for a direct message from me. I look forward to hearing more about your experience and thank you again for trying our beautiful project. Cheers, citizen Taylor

Like everyone says, the rooms are tiny. I wanted to try something different and this as definitely that. On the pro side, the bed was great, the shower very good and the breakfast set-up was awesome. On the negative side our Ipad didn't work and it took some time to get it fixed and since it controls everything in the room this is a big deal. The staff was definitely aloof, and I felt like we had to press to order food or drinks otherwise we were completely ignored. It seemed like they were still coming out of Covid customer service IMHO. We were there during the heat wave and the room was kind of stuffy and hot, despite the thermostat saying it was 64!
The location is great if you want to be in the thick of things and the price is great too compared to nearby hotels. Glad I tried something different but would pass on this in the future.

The bed was very comfortable and pillows great- as they advertise but that’s about all the positive. We arrived after nearly 24 hours of flights and waiting in airports, there were two people on the desk and they pointed out that it is self check in. We struggled to get passport pictures scanned etc but it seemed if little interest to them as they sat there chatting to each other. It was the same for an elderly couple checking in later who clearly needed assistance but it clearly wasn’t going to be offered by staff. The next really poor point is that I do think you should be able to get out of your bed without having to climb over your partner to do so, and as the bed was forced into a tiny space with access just from one side, this was the only option. The room itself was also absolutely tiny and once out bags were in there , there was simply no room to move about the room without the other person having to get back on the one sided bed. I paid I think around $380 for two nights, this is not expensive but I would definitely rather pay the extra to get something where customer service is more important to them and one with access to both sides of the bed plus room to swing a cat (if desired) the pictures on booking.com are not how the rooms are in reality. We come back to Chicago in 9 days after a trip to New york and will be staying at trump international instead of our intention originally of coming back to this Hotel.

This was awful. It is run by young adults who look like they left college a couple of years ago. Front desk help was beyond terrible. We had no hot water or water pressure for shower. We told front desk the first morning of our stay and then left for the day. Came back with no messages so assumed fix. When we were heading out for the night, checked to find nothing changed. When we went back to front desk, the manager checked file and there was nothing about our water problems. She said she would get engineering to look at it. She also offered another room but we couldn’t do anything about it because we had to leave for dinner reservation. We came back that night and no message again. Next morning, no hot water and no water pressure. We went to front desk. They looked up and said plumber can’t come until Monday. We only had one night left and leaving Sunday. And that’s it. Guy behind desk didn’t care. He didn’t offer us to change rooms. We spent 3 nights, had standing sponge baths every day and there was no follow up or customer service. Problems happen and things break. That’s life. But there was no accountability, effort or any concern to fix our problem or give us an acceptable stay beyond a 7:00 pm offer on our second of three nights to move rooms as we had to leave for a dinner reservation. Awful, awful, awful.

The only good thing about this hotel is the central location. Ok, and the view was decent from our room. Everything else sucks.
The reception is on the 4th floor, the "receptionists" are disengaged people who look like recent grads of some art school. After a long travel, we are supposed to check ourselves in, scan our ID, get key-cards etc.
The elevator displays were showing a mostly naked guy prancing in his red shoes. Sorry, we are not prudes, but I am just not interested in seeing something like that.
The room is TINY, and one person has to climb over the other in order to get out of a bed or go to the bathroom. The bed is basically squished in between two walls and a window.
The bathroom itself is basically a part of the room just divided by some kind of plexiglass. No privacy whatsoever, so if you need to do #2, even if you are sharing the room with your spouse, you will be very uncomfortable.
Moreover, you can't turn the light on or off, or do anything unless you do it on the tablet. C'mon, this is ridiculous! I need to be able to press a switch somewhere on the wall and turn off the light.
It was raining that day and we borrowed an umbrella. Well, a block down, when it started pouring and we opened the umbrella, we realized that it was some kind of artistic design where one side of the umbrella is much shorter so one of us was not really covered by the umbrella. At that point, I wasn't even surprised.
Modern is fine but your too modern hotel is ridiculous. Sorry, whoever dreamed up this design must have been under some kind of influence. We love traveling; we stayed in some very small rooms in New York and Europe, but we will definitely not come back to this place.

While our teams are always here to assist our mobile citizens with their needs, we know that at times, a more traditional experience is what is expected. We will be sure to share your feedback with our team to see about adapting items that we feel are in line with the experience we want to offer. Overall, I had a nice stay. The concept with the living room and the 24h bar is great. However, I find $4 for a small bottle of water or $4 for a tea very cheeky. This could be offered much cheaper for hotel guests. The room was of sufficient size. I personally do not like the open concept. I would like to have a separate bathroom. Due to the open concept, the ventilation ran all day, which was much too loud, especially for the night. Also, the air conditioning in the first room did not work, which meant the room did not get warm. However, a change was possible without any problems. The staff was also very nice with one exception.

This is a relatively new hotel, very nice and creative furnishings, very helpful staff, and what looked like a very fine breakfast. (I did not partake... I had to leave to find a different hotel)
Modern, new, yes.. HOWEVER, when I checked in at 7:30pm on Friday, January 19th, 2024, the room (#612) was quite cold: 68F. That's understandable—good idea to save energy when room is unoccupied. BUT, the heating system heating system never made a dent in that temperature all night long, except when I opened the door to the hallway for 10 minutes. Then the temperature in the room rose briefly to 60F. But I eventually closed the door, reasoning that leaving the door open to the hallway all night long would not be a good idea, security and privacy-wise.
The staff did—eventually—provide an extra comforter. But let me tell you, you don't really appreciate modern central heating until you've spent a Looong night in a small, all-hard-surface room in Chicago in January at 68F. That morning shower did have plenty of hot water... but then you step out onto the currently popular hard, cold flooring. It might have been pleasantly invigorating, if I was not already chilled to the bone.
Clearly, the air handler in the room was not operating at anything like full airflow. Only a small dribble of tepid air, no matter what setting I attempted on the snazzy but slow, highly UNresponsive app on the iPad that controls all room functions. Perhaps a control problem between the iPad and the HVAC system. But until the installer fixes the perimeter zone HVAC system AND the controls for the room air handlers, I suggest you find a different hotel in Chicago. That's what I did, first thing the following morning.

It’s a walk (or ride) from the hotel, close to the Museum of Contemporary Art, but I would highly recommend the Wildberry Pancakes and Cafe for brunch.
