Nestled in a picturesque setting, Grandhotel Giessbach earns rave reviews for its stunning views of a lake and waterfall. Guests are charmed by the hotel's historic atmosphere and cleanliness, with many appreciating the elegant and spotless conditions. However, some travelers mention the lack of modern amenities like air conditioning and the occasional oversight in service. While the ambiance and location are highly praised, reviewers warn that the value proposition may be diminished by high prices and extra charges.

staying at the giessbach was a blast from the past! it was so much fun arriving by boat on lake brienz and then taking the funicular up to the hotel. arriving at the base of the huge waterfall made the entire arrival very special.

the hotel is old and historic with much of the original decor...or at least it seems that way. we even had a sink in our room. our room was fine, not fancy but the view from the balcony was simply amazing. we were directly on the lake with a magnificent view of the entire waterfall, only a stones throw away. at night it was even illuminated. if you are looking for pristine interior and exteriors, and high style decor you will not find that here. it is an old historic hotel and the upkeep must me endless. what makes this place so special is the feeling of a past time and place. you feel like you've entered another century. the views are amazing and the grounds are huge and walkable.

the service is excellent. the front desk people were all so nice. we especially enjoyed working with melanie and venice. they were so warm, friendly, helpful, patient and knowledgeable. freddy the shuttle driver was great too.

the location of the hotel is not as convenient for trips to interlaken etc unless you have a car or are able to work around the shuttle schedule. it does not run on demand or even all day, so you have to work around that or the boat schedule.

we met people there who have been going every year for 20 years. it's a magical place.

Absolutely loved the scenery of this hotel. Hard to believe you can have a lovely waterfall right outside your hotel. The lake isn't so bad either. The service and staff of the hotel were top notch. The parking situation is a bit tricky at times as it is tandem parking so you have to leave your keys with the front desk. If you can't get a spot at the tandem location, you have to park your car up the hill instead. The exterior of the hotel is fantastic and keeps the charm of its original look. However, I wish they would update the interior as it remains dated and in need of some new furniture and fresh paint. The bathroom appears to be the only thing updated with upgraded shower and heated floors. But the rest of the room could use new carpet and furniture. And I must say the showerhead pressure was wonderful as Im from California and we have to use an eco friendly head to conserve water. Overall wonderful hotel including the breakfast but if they would just upgrade the looks of the hotel it would give it a full 5 stars for me.

Listen, this is a historic hotel. That means the rooms are very small and furnished with old furniture. We had to get 3 rooms for my family of 5, and my sons was literally a closet. So this is not about the rooms. The rooms are very basic.
However, the hotel is gorgeous and the grounds are incredible. Beautiful hiking to the waterfall and the views over the lake are incredible. We also loved the pool, which was interesting and had algea on the bottom because it was self cleaning.
There is one key component here.
If you book through them you get tickets to the brienz rail train to the top of the mountain which would have cost us 500 euro's, the breakfast was included and was huge and incredible with tons of options. You also get the boat rides on the lake and use of the furnicle.
Come to this hotel because of the views, location and what is included. Do not mind the rooms, because you should be outside having fun

It was really disappointing. We stayed 3 times in this hotel and the last visit showed us that service quality worsened in time. It was our anniversary and I asked a nice table for romantic dinner. We were offered to have a table at the entrance where people are waiting to be seated. I would expext at least a flower or a small table decoration, nothing!
Besides, the dinner was not really worth its price.

The room was very cold as the heater was not working. The hotel was very noisy because of housekeepers. We asked them to change our room as housekeeping room was right next to us and naturally it was so noisy. Instead of helping us, the reception chief told us that we need to pay extra as we used the room 2 hours and re-cleaning would be needed. She said they can warn the staff about the noise and we decided to remain in our room and 7:15 am we had to wake up due to same noisy housekeeping staff.

We paid more than 600 chf for a single night and like we had no issues, they charged us 184 chf extra. When I questioned that we found out it was a mistake. Of course no apology from the reception! Once upon a time it was a nice hotel

We will never visit them again!

Response from Grandhotel Giessbach, General Manager at Grandhotel Giessbach
Responded Jan 27, 2024
Dear Swiss Guest We sincerely apologize for the disappointing experience you had during your recent stay. We are sorry to hear about the issues with the dinner setting, room temperature, and disturbances caused by housekeeping. You booked you room with half board included which the service team unfortunately oversaw and booked the dinner again to your room. The additional charge from the Service team are inexcusable, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused by this error. As an apology on spot, we not only cancelled the double-booked dinner, but also the drinks you consumed that night. We also offered you the opportunity to choose something from our Giessbach Shop, which is located at the front office. I will personally address these matters with the relevant teams to ensure improvement regarding room changing wishes, guest seating wishes etc.. Your feedback is valuable, and we'll use it to enhance our services. If you reconsider, we'd love the opportunity to provide you with a better experience in the future. Warm regards Grandhotel Giessbach

This is a very interesting property which shows how old hotels where build in the XIX century and can be preserved and be charming until today. It is a member of the Historic Hoteles of Switzerland and the man who rescued it from demolition and donated the real estate to the Swiss people has to be honored for his task.
The hotel preserves furniture, interiors and ambience of 1879 with modern up to date bathrooms.
We had what they call a suite which consisted of an average sized room plus an absurd huge useless bathroom space. Everything clean and nice.
Food is very good in either the main restaurant or the upper haute cuisine one. Breakfast buffet style is very generous.
The swimming pool is external and a bio kind with some algae.
Staff is trained and kind, Swiss style. Location could not be better for views and convenience to explore the region.
The issues about this hotel are : no AC, which in summer makes rooms facing the sun very hot and uncomfortable. No mosquito screens which fills rooms with flies. Our HAUSER suite was not a suite. Although they explained it did not have a separate sitting room, it was supposed to have a sitting corner. Instead of the 2 armchairs showed in the web site, we found 2 hard dining table chairs which made the cozy reading corner a joke. Many day tourists not living at the hotel plus large groups hosting events in the events areas makes this not a quiet hotel.
Avoid the HAUSER “suite” and the 3rd floor rooms with inclined ceilings.
Internet works very well.

The location is unique and very beautiful. Unfortunately, the hotel does not meet 4-star standards. There was no minibar in the room, no hotel slippers, no comfort. The shower was really very small and the water ran generously into the bathroom when you showered. The bed squeaked with every little movement, making it impossible to sleep comfortably. Generally there was little space in the room. The staff were mostly unmotivated. You only get one room key, the door lock still has to be opened with a key in the old-fashioned way. Parking is impossible and annoying. You have to hand in your car key at reception because you have to park one behind the other in car parks. This means you get blocked in or block someone else. The food in the hotel restaurant was average, the waiting times between courses were far too long. At the breakfast buffet there was only open jam and butter, which not everyone finds hygienic. The price-performance ratio is not right at all.

My team at work spent three days at the Geissbach and we were thrilled with the location and natural beauty surrounding the hotel. A number of people arrived or left via the option to take the boat to the train in Brienz. The nature park surrounding the hotel is amazing - tremendous views, beautiful waterfall and gorgeous grounds. We used one of the salons of the hotel on the main floor for our meeting, which provided a lovely meeting space. The hotel staff was really great. We had breakfast in the hotel everyday and enjoyed a number of dinners and lunches as well. Most of the rooms have a view of either the lake or waterfall and were quite lovely. Despite the age, the rooms were really quiet. While the rooms were “vintage” - armoires and wood beds, the bathrooms were beautifully updated. My only comment was that my room was quite bright at night because it didn’t have blackout curtains and the hotel leaves lights on the front of the building until after midnight, I’m a light sleeper, but mostly slept fine despite the light. I would highly recommend the hotel for a day trip, vacation or a spot to consider for a work get together.

The Grandhotel Giessbach impressed me in every way! The hotel has a luxury that I can accept because it is full of culture, warmth and friendliness. A piano player contributes to a pleasant atmosphere, how lovely it is to enjoy live music! The variety of dining rooms really appealed to me, everything is so beautifully maintained, with a lot of finesse and tact. The breakfast buffet really has something for everyone. As a vegan, I appreciated the New Roots cheese, among other things. What I was particularly pleased about was that the duvets in the room are Swiss quality and are not live plucked! Bravo! It's perfect down to the last detail! Thank you for showing so much respect for animals and our environment!

Dining anywhere in Switzerland is expensive. Surprisingly, dining at the Gliessbach Hotel is no more expensive than most other places but this hotel offers so much more. Lunch is served in the opulent dining hall with spectacular views over the Gliessbach waterfalls. The food is excellent and the service impeccable. Highly recommended.

We stayed two nights in a waterfall room and couldn’t have been more happy with our stay. The grounds are unlike anything we’ve ever seen. We spent our first day hiking around the waterfall trails and taking in the stunning lake view. We wanted to go out exploring our second day so it was nice having the hotel shuttle that took us to and from the train station. We ate dinner at the hotel, which was ok. The 4-course meal had some good options, but it was a bit over priced for what it was. Still a good experience though. We were very impressed with the breakfast. The hotel itself is like stepping back in time but everything is well maintained. Some older hotels have bathrooms that leave something to be desired but Giessbach has updated bathrooms with great water pressure. We plan on coming back in our next trip to Switzerland!

The hotel is at a secluded spot in the forest. You would need to drive to the next villages, which is about 15mins by car.

Hi there, guests in the hotel can park on site free of charge, the guest carpark is alongside the hotel, visitors to the hotel must park at the car park inside the main entrance to the site and there is an hourly charge in this area. This capark is a 4 minute walk from the hotel entrance and is uphill from the hotel and is a reasonably steep climb.

I do not think lunch is four course, like I know dinner is. There are burgers and lots of great things on the menu for lunch. But do not count on any of the food, (except maybe the salads), being very good. It’s a wonderful place to eat because of the location only, Except for the breakfast buffet, which is absolutely wonderful!
