Nice hotel but very poor customer service, bad enough to where we would not return. Our first poor experience occurred when we arrived at the airport and after waiting for 30 minutes, no shuttle ever arrived. The website says that shuttles run until 12:30am, yet we arrived at 11p and when we called the hotel they stated the driver was ‘gone for the night’ very nonchalantly. Our second poor experience is when I got up to go down to the gym and the key wouldn’t work. I informed the person at the front desk and again, it was a very nonchalant attitude of ‘we’ll get to it when we can’. Over an hour passed and the door still wasn’t working, which I ended up having to forego my workout. Our third poor experience happened when we went to the on-site restaurant. My husband and I walked in with our 1 year old son, the hostess looked at us as if we were a bother to her, and stated ‘I just walked in, y’all are gonna have to give me a minute.’ We ended up seating ourselves and then were informed that they were out of several items on the menu. All in all, this was a very poor representation of the city of Atlanta and a hotel that we would not recommend unless they do a better job of training their staff.

Dear bkb1127, I am sorry to hear about this overall experience. This certainly is not the journey I want our guests to encounter while at the hotel. I will look into the shuttle time posted...we have been running to 11:00 for some time now and followed up with our team to make sure it was posted correctly. This was my second stay in six months at the Kimpton Overland Hotel. I sought it out because my first experience was superior - friendly, competent staff, a wonderful room overlooking the stunning Porsche building and track, a good meal onsite, and convenient airport transportation. This time was not so good. Check-in was good; service for dinner in the restaurant started out well until the bartender/server engaged in a 15-20 minute conversation with two female patrons and ignored me. Only one other party was in the restaurant. I got up to ask for my bill. She apologized and gave me the check. The next morning at 6:00 a.m. I went to check out and saw another man in line ahead of me. He said that the woman left to make coffee. Ten minutes passed and no one was at the desk. Both the man and I had early flights to catch so we called the airport driver who told us that the young woman was a new hire. It was nearly 15 minutes before we left, and no one returned to the desk to check us out. The airport shuttle driver was another story. He was very nice and proud of the fancy sports car he drove for shuttling guests to the airport. The drive to the airport was frightening. He drove too fast and followed too closely behind car after car, that I gripped the seat, fearing a collision. Next time I will stay at the more convenient and safer Renaissance or Marriott on the Skytrain route to the airport.

I mainly book IHG Family hotels for my travels and I decided to go with this one for my trip to the Porsche Experience Center in celebration of my birthday. From the moment I checked in, the service was unlike anything I've experienced thus far. Sandy, the agent that I checked in with made me truly feel like a platinum elite and checked every box in relation to my status and then some. I had a few things to do on the day of checkout including items I forgot to pack and figuring out what to get for breakfast. But this became stress free as any issues or requests that came up were courteously resolved by both Julie and Andrea, both whom were also pleasant to speak to which is always a bonus.

Hotel- Kimpton Overland Hotel (Atlanta, GA) Date- May 2021 (3 nights) Overall: 3/5. OK. The property itself is quite nice, and its proximity to the airport is ideal for travelers. Soundproofing is excellent, but the location is somewhat isolated. When the airport shuttle is reliable, this is no problem, though. The stay started out poorly, but the staff was able to turn around the experience and make it positive overall. Normally a 4 or 5, this property lost a full point for COVID-19 procedures. Rewards Club Recognition- 4/5. Very good, overall. We received a text around check in time from Andrea thanking us for our loyalty to welcome us back to the property. When we later checked into the property, though, our Inner Circle membership status was not mentioned. Welcome bonus points were not offered, nor was the typical Raid-the-Bar (now bodega) $10 credit. When we arrived at the room, we did learn that it had been upgraded. The Inner Circle VIP Amenity was present in the room and included some sparkling wine, and a cheese/fruit & cracker treat. That was nice. Another benefit of being an Inner Circle member, we were given a late checkout of up to 4pm. Staff- 3/5. OK, but not anywhere near the usual Kimpton exceptional service we have come to expect. This was a severely mixed staff experience. Some terrible, some excellent. I have weighted those that exceeded our expectations in my score. Our experience began poorly: Anthony, at the reception, was not wearing his mask during our check in with the neighboring staff member. It was a busy time for reception, and when we asked if the hotel follows the Kimpton Approach to Clean or mask policy, hostility abounded. The staff did not wear nametags, introduce themselves, or announce who they were when we later called down to the front desk; if you asked to whom you were talking, defensiveness began. Even other guests in the elevators were overheard talking about how it seemed team members didn’t want guests to know who they were. It’s a logical assumption since some staff members (reception & maintenance) were either combative or indifferent with guests during the first night we were there. The maintenance person (1may, evening- Mike) also was caught lying to us. I would say ‘through his mask,’ but he too was wearing it as a bib, even when he entered our room. An hour and a half after we requested someone check the mini fridge, he finally came to verify that it indeed didn’t work, only to tell us he’d have to look around to have one swapped out from another room “because the property is sold out.” It wasn’t, as multiple other staff members later admitted to us. But, by the time we learned this- more than 3.5 hours later, he had gone home, never having even let us know he didn’t intend on returning or that he couldn’t ‘locate’ a replacement. Some of our cold items spoiled overnight, even with repeated trips to the ice machine. Other items ended up waterlogged. At the opposite end of the spectrum was Rachel, the night auditor. She was Kimpton appropriate; engaging and eager to delight, she was truly the Rock star of the group. In fact, when I heard her name, I quickly remembered what a good experience I had had with her during previous stays. This visit was no different in that way; she impressed. She took ownership of our hotel experience and ensured management followed up to rectify any problems we were having. Similarly good, the following afternoon, AJ, the Front Office Manager, took the time to talk with us and made special effort to address our concerns. He and Rachel deserve kudos for turning around our staff member experience. Julianne was also a pleasure to interact with, as was Andrea, who eventually handled our checkout; I hope to see her, AJ, Rachel & Julianne again soon. Property Appearance & Maintenance- 3/5. OK, but needs improvement in select areas. Exterior- 4/5. Very good. The property is clean, and the landscaping is well maintained. The parking lot and entrance were relatively debris-free. Interior- 3/5. OK, but needs improvement. The lobby and living room were clean and in good repair, but the chairs and couches in the living room area were stained, nearly all of them. Hallway walls and carpets were cleaned, but scuffs and spots were evident. The primary maintenance issues we had were in the room. Housekeeping & maintenance are not working together enough to identify and remedy problems before guests find them. Accommodations- 4/5. Very good, overall. We were assigned an “Executive Suite,” and the overall look was stylish. At the head of the bed, a modern headboard was attention-grabbing. This room type is spacious, and good for single travelers and couples. The bathroom setup is unusual, with the tub, shower and sink open to the bedroom, and a toilet with sink in another room, which may not be ideal for families. The room, though, needs maintenance’s attention: At arrival time, the minifridge was not functional, which should have been caught since the light inside flickered continuously like there was an electrical short. The sliding closet door nearest the entrance was off the rail and on the carpet. The air conditioning worked well in the bedroom but wasn’t as effective in the living area, which quickly became quite warm during the day, even while the bedroom was frosty cold. Housekeeping- 3/5. OK, but needs improvement. The room was clean, and toiletries (toilet paper, facial tissues, soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.) were provided in a quantity adequate for the length of our stay. However, the elevator bay floors remained sticky throughout our stay. The alarm clock had no batteries & naturally, was not functioning. Pool/Gym- not evaluated. The pool is closed. The gym is available. Food & Beverage Options- 4/5. Very good. Apron, the restaurant, is open in the evenings for dinner service, and Grab-n-Go items were available during other hours, as was a ‘bodega’ at the front desk, since the minibars are emptied. The rooftop bar remains closed. The signature Kimpton social/wine hour was offered in the restaurant bar, and coffee service proceeded per usual in the living area. Laundry- not evaluated Computer/Printer/WiFi- 5/5. Excellent. WiFi was strong throughout the hotel, and streaming was smooth. Other- (-1 to overall score, for Pandemic Operations) The IHG/Kimpton policy on wearing a mask over your nose and mouth, both guests and staff, was NOT adhered to. Our first night, fewer than 1 in 3 guests wore masks while moving about the hotel; at no point did we observe the staff offering them masks, as would be appropriate (whether they took and used them or not). Our first day, only two staff members we encountered were wearing the mask up over the nose and mouth. Most wore them below their nose; others chose to make them bibs under the chin—even when within inches of guests’ faces. Having personally lost friends, neighbors, and a family member during the pandemic, this was a serious concern for my spouse & I. It is understandable that wearing a mask can be annoying, particularly when local laws no longer mandate it, but IHG and Kimpton still advertise that guests can expect staff will. Please be mindful that some guests are very sensitive to this.

From arrival with early check-in to check-out, you exceeded our expectations. Your hospitality and COVID-19 standards made our business meeting excellent. Highlights: the entire property is spotless, overlooking the Porsche Driving Experience was entertaining, viewing the first 2021 pink moon from the rooftop bar was amazing, smiling staff members, general manager engaged with us daily...it is no surprise you were recommended to us by the Georgia State Department of Leisure and Travel. With all those positives, the most impressive was the meeting meal service and the outdoor dining. Our group can truly be food and beverage snobs, and you served some of the best “conference”meals we have enjoyed in years. Thank you!
