My boyfriend picked this B&B after surfing online for a nice, quiet, romantic place for us to stay. From the website, this looked to be the place for that. He told the B&B owner we would be checking in after 3pm on Friday. We pulled up at 4pm and were very confused. There is no front door to speak of. Just garage doors, and a set of stairs on either side leading to a patio. We walked up the stairs, looked around, and felt like we were intruding. We walked around the back of the building and found a door with the Horsetooth Hideaway sign next to it so we went in. It was laundry room. Guest towels, coin-operated washer and dryer, and an ice machine. Confused, we walked quietly down the hall and found 2 doors, each with a sign that read "Welcome, please knock". We knocked and knocked. No answer. Called the B&B's number and left a voicemail. Finally, we walked out and went next door to the bar that shares a parking lot. Yes, a bar. A biker bar. The bartender didn't know where the owner was and suggested we come back later, or check the liquor store behind them. Yep, our B&B was nearly attached to both a biker bar and a liquor store. Which was across the street from a trailer park. We finally got a call from the owner telling us we were in room 3 and to just let ourselves in, the keys were in the door. We couldn't have felt more safe and secure what with the home unlocked and our room keys in the door.
The room was very nice, and extremely clean. Cleaner than any hotel I've ever stayed in. My only complaint about the room was the "fireplace". It isn't a fireplace, but a fireplace facsimile. It's modeled to LOOK like one, but in reality it's a resin mold of wood and ash with a switch on the side to "turn it on". It's a fancy-looking space heater. It works. Puts out heat. But fireplace it is not. The bed was firm and comfortable. The couch and sofa chair looked relatively new. Also, the website boasts free WiFi, but we were never able to use it as we didn't know the password and didn't get to meet the owner until right before we checked out.
The second night we were there, we got to hear the owners kid(s) running the hall and screeching. Then heard him yell "WHAT THE HELL! I HAVE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE!" The first morning we left before sunrise so we didn't have breakfast there. But Sunday morning we got up and decided to have breakfast at the B&B. Figured we would get the full experience, since it's a bed and breakfast after all. We awkwardly knocked on the doors that said "please knock" but no answer. So we decided to see if the owner (whom we still had not met) was outside. He was on the deck drinking coffee. We asked how the breakfast situation works, and he told us to just go next door to the bar and pick whatever we wanted from their breakfast menu. He said "it's something new I'm trying out." Nervous, we went next door. The breakfast was good and the man running the bar that day was pleasant. But really not the "B&B" experience described on the Horsetooth Hideaway's website which made mention of the owners "famous huevos rancheros" and omelets.
On the B&B website there are pictures of common areas, such as the kitchen and living room. We were never able to enjoy these rooms as each time we knocked, there was no answer. And there was no instruction, or "rule list" if you will, when we "checked in". When we went to check out, we knocked and the owner actually came out. We told him we were checking out, and he went back in and closed the door, leaving us in the weird laundry room area. He brought us a carbon copy of the bill to sign and we exchanged pleasantries about what we'd done in Colorado. He was a very nice, down-to-earth sort of guy. I just think he has no idea how to run a B&B.
