Ameristar Casino Resort Spa Black Hawk is celebrated for its lively ambiance and a host of amenities that include plush rooms with diverse pillow options and complimentary services that delight many guests. The spotless environment and friendly housekeeping staff earn high marks for cleanliness. However, opinions on the rooms and service are split; some guests describe the rooms as cozy and luxurious, while others point to a need for renovation and odor issues.
Similarly, while the staff is often commended for being helpful, issues with long waits and subpar service have been reported. Although the gaming experience is enjoyed, the value proposition is questioned by travelers who find the dining and gaming costs steep, alongside high resort fees.

Detailed Reviews
If you appreciate the beauty of the mountains and love fresh air, maybe you would like staying at Ameristar in Black Hawk, Colorado. The hotel is able to accommodate a family or, a business trip. The rooms are fairly priced and there are many restaurants on site to feed you 24 hours a day.
The staff is friendly and will help you whenever they can.
The casino has a rustic mountain theme with beautiful decor. However, you have to smoke outside. Children are only allowed in some of the eating facilities. Be prepared to do a lot of walking. It is a very large building. If time is a problem or you don't like walking, then I would suggest using the valet parking.
There are many events held in Black Hawk/Central City throughout the year, so check online. Many are a blast, especially if you like history.
You could even win some money.

Nice newer hotel in Black Hawk - rooms were comfortable and parking is free - Black Hawk free shuttle loads right at door . We had breakfast in one of their restaurants and felt it was way overpriced ($12 for oatmeal for example) - we were disappointed more food options were not offered. Staff was friendly, pArking is free

Wile my husband and brother-in-law prefer slots (and each won, I might add), I love craps and this casino beats all for friendliness, and professionalism. The dealers really take care of their customers. I never have to worry about being mis-paid, as I have in several other casinos. The layout of this casino is very convenient, it smells fresh but not overwhelming, can’t say enough good things about this casino. If you’ve never played here you are missing out.

Out of all the Casinos in Blackhawk you would of thought that Ameristar would have there crap together. They make it so cumbersome to get into the building, then to get your card updated, then you have to clean the machines yourself when this is their job to do this. This was the agreement they said yes to to be able to open. Also, most machines were the $1 or up that were open, we hardly seen any pennie or nickel slots.

I stayed at Ameristar on 9/15/21. The room had no blankets on the bed. When I inquired about it, I was told it was due to COVID restrictions. Not sure why this would be the case since all bedding is washed anyway. One party in my room is an older person and was freezing the whole time without a blanket. The tissue holder had only a few sheets of tissue in it, and the bathroom had just one bar of soap that had to be shared at the sink and then brought into the bathtub for bathing. Room service is no longer available due to COVID restrictions. Not sure why this is the case, as patrons dine in their 4 restaurants daily. It's essentially the same type of service. Hotel hallways on floors 23-29 wreaked of marijuana from late evening to early am hours during my stay. That stench was awful and kept me awake all night. Other patrons complained of this also when checking out of the hotel.
The hotel is understaffed in all areas. Waiters and Cocktail Waiters can rarely be found. The front desk never answers the phone. Ameristar is no longer a desired place to stay. I will not be returning.

Ameristar is still the best hotel in Blackhawk (until Monarch opens). Spent one night midweek. Rooms and hotel have been well maintained, no wear or tear in my king room. Spacious bath with water closet and glass shower. Comfortable bed and nice linens. Roof top pool (7am - 11pm) is very nice and year round.
Check-in was a little annoying. Arrived at 3pm and was checked in, but told room wasn't ready (mid week with covid?) and was told that check in was at 4 pm and they'd call me. Played in the casino but no call by 4 pm. Saw people with luggage going up to rooms, so I went back to the desk and had to stand in line to find out my room was ready. A line again for the restricted elevators. So with covid it seems that staggered check in upon arrival would have been better. When I left at 8:30 am there were many housekeepers making up rooms, so I'm sure there rooms ready by 3 pm.

Used to love going to Ameristar but the last couple visits the quality and cleanliness has been going downhill.
Check-in was easy but once we got to the room there was hair in the shower and lots of fingerprints all over the window that looked out to the view
Regarding the amenities, the hot tub outside was closed, (not informed of this at check-in), tried to use the fire pit that was on But the doors were locked to the outside area so we couldn’t access it. Called the front desk said they would check on that and get back with me, never heard from them. Went ahead and used the indoor hot tub but it ended up being lukewarm, at best.
They have also gone to the big bottles of refillable soaps, lotions. Would prefer at least one bar of hand/face soap.
I understand that getting good help is difficult these days and unfortunately for Ameristar that is apparent.

We chose this hotel because of the Choice Rewards program because we frequently visit the casinos in Missouri and already have members cards and points racked up so this visit would earn credits with the same program. Our room was nice enough except for the stained carpet in front of the nightstand (looked like red wine) and it smelled faintly of mold. There was a big dirty handprint on the lamp shade on the nightstand that is hard to miss. Bathroom was large with 2 sinks and the toilet separate so we could both be getting ready at the same time. Full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash in the shower but I didn’t know until I was already in the shower our first day there that the body wash dispenser was completely empty. The casino was way too hot with all of the fireplaces burning. We were already having a hard time adjusting to the difference in altitude and feeling short of breath and dehydrated. The combination of too much heat and no humidity makes a person very thirsty but the beverage station on the first floor was out of order and the other one on the second floor was out of ice all day. Alcohol is free and there was a lady walking around taking orders but we weren’t in the mood for drinking and we were able to get bottled water from her. Our biggest problem, however, was only one of their restaurants was open the entire time we were there. My fault for not checking online beforehand I guess but we were there the week of spring break (Sunday night to Thursday night). After a little research later, I saw that most of the restaurants in the area and some of the other casino restaurants have limited hours and it’s not unusual for them to only be open Thursday through Saturday or Sunday. The restaurant that was open at Ameristar (Fireside Kitchen) was overpriced and service was slow as there was only one server working the only time we ate there. We had a rental car so we were able to drive to regular restaurants in nearby Central City and Idaho Springs for the rest of our stay. There is a free shuttle to and from the other casinos so we could have done without the rental car but we flew to Denver and then drove an hour to Black Hawk. I was under the impression that there is free transportation from Denver airport to Black Hawk but there isn’t as far as I can tell. Lastly, neither of us won a dime in the Ameristar casino (slots) and after wasting several hundred dollars each, we decided to gamble at some of the other nearby casinos for the remainder of our stay. We highly recommend the Monarch and plan to stay there next time.

Casino needs to be thoroughly cleaned, hosts need to visit with their VIP, have more cocktail servers. Food is so so unless you go to the Timberline Grill which is excellent. They need to have cleaning staff onsite for the hotel rooms which are really dirty and need peeking wallpaper replaced, mold out of the showers, more hot water.

I was offered a comp room, so my son and me went up on a Sunday night. This is truly one of the best hotels in Blackhawk. My only complaint besides the tight machines is the "Resort Fee" they now track onto the comped rooms. It's obviously a way to get something on what used to be a free room. The slot machines are tight but the place is very nicely decorated. I'm not sure why they even call it a comped room if you have to pay the "Resort Fee."
