The ocean-front Sea & Sand Inn has always been popular with savvy out-of-towners, but a major renovation in 2009 has added a whole new “wow” factor. Three new luxury king spa rooms with ocean view balconies were added; two spacious family cottages with private hot tubs and three other spa rooms were also upgraded. All 22 rooms have a fantastic ocean front view of sparkling Monterey Bay.

We have stayed at the Sea and Sand Inn for over 40 years in a row and love the hotel. We will continue to stay there as long as we can afford the hotel. The view is priceless (even though we pay a lot).

I have never been more pleasantly surprised, on a first-time visit to a new location, to find that ALL of my expectations for pleasant, worry-free multi-night accommodations were being met. The staff are very forthcoming in providing sound, straightforward guidance to help make your stay in their town the best that it can be. Use their expertise to help plan and carry out your visit.

Sea and Sand Inn has an amazing location with incredible views. The serenity and peace felt while looking out over the ocean is indescribable. The grounds of Sea and Sand Inn were beautiful and safe for our children to play in the grassy areas. Between the complementary breakfast, cookies and milk, and wine and cheese; there were several opportunities to relax and enjoy the beautiful view and enjoy a nice treat. This is an amazing property and we would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for spacious accommodations, incredible views, and value for their money. We will absolutely be back!

We stayed two nights in a Grand Luxury King Spa room, which cost $1100+. For that kind of money, I expect the room to be spotless, especially in COVID times. The mini fridge was disgustingly dirty, with goopy melted food all over the freezer. The sponge for the kitchenette was NOT new, and it was wet when I touched it. I microwaved it and hoped for the best. The ceiling fan did not work and it was covered in thick dust, like it had not been cleaned in months. The toilet paper holder was straight up missing, so we got to keep the toilet paper on the windowsill. The sheets were scratchy and the pillows were old and lumpy. Thankfully the bed itself was comfortable.

The room was definitely not a grand luxury experience. I have paid less for a true luxury room at the 5-star Park Hyatt Tokyo, so the cost of this room is ridiculous given the Sea & Sand is a 3-star hotel and the room was dirty and shabby. Furthermore, when I checked out and noted the room's unacceptable dirty condition, the woman working gave me an insincere apology, stating that they "usually keep the rooms very clean." I showed her the photos that I took, and she said all she could do was make a note for the manager to review.

Also note that because the door to this kind of room faces W. Cliff Dr., you'll hear street noise clearly, as in loud vehicles revving engines, people screaming, etc. The crashing ocean waves outside the balcony were great, so we made do.

This hotel has a really great location, on a bluff overlooking the bay, a short walking distance to the pier and the Boardwalk.

But it is way overpriced for what you receive. The room we were in was on the small side. It was advertised as having a king bed, but it actually came with a queen bed. The bathroom cabinets were falling apart and the blinds had seen much better days.

The room came with an iron, but no ironing board?

The hotel has recently started charging a “resort fee”, which the desk clerks struggled to explain to several complaining clients. The “fee” charged was $20.00 per person per day. For that fee you were able to access their extremely small (3 tables) lounge and partake in a limited “continental breakfast” of Safeway style bagels, scones and muffins, hard boiled eggs, instant oatmeal and coffee. But, in the afternoon, between 3:00 and 5:00 you also have access to reheated cookies and from 5:30 to 8:00 two different kinds of cheap wine and your choice of processed Cheddar cheese or Pepper Jack squares .

But the location is great!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write your review. Our guests love our continental breakfast, wine and cheese hour, and fresh baked cookies. Ironing boards can be found in every room closet. We apologize for the inconvenience of the resort fee and will be re-valuating the fee on future reservations. Please let us know if you have any questions, and we wish you all the best in your future travels.

This place is a gem! Such a great location with a small motel feel. Coffee, breakfast goodies and wine and cheese- who could ask for more? This place is kept spotless and the crew who takes care of it obviously takes great pride in this place. Can’t wait to come back!

From the online pictures we had quite a different expectation than when we opened up the room door. We found the room to be very small, stark, and dorm like. The room included a king bed with a single throw pillow, a small, dated table and chairs in the corner and a large garbage bin and a recycle bin. The highlight was a wall mounted fireplace which really gave off a lot of heat. We originally chose the bottom floor but found the motel like access to be not private enough with the foot traffic so we moved to the second floor. Had we seen actual pictures of the room on the website we would have had different expectations. For the price we paid compared to other resort hotel rooms we were truly disappointed. But I do have to say the view of the ocean, the room fireplace, the various food and beverage items included and the super friendly staff made up for it.

We stay here every year for the famous Wharf to Wharf race. The location and views are outstanding. We rent the cottage suites which includes living room, bedroom, kitchen and bath. The place has really gone downhill. Furniture is shabby, dirty and worn. Had to cover sofa bed arms with a sheet as it was so dirty. Screen on slider kept falling off. Sinks got plugged up and plumber had to be called. Four of us stayed in each suite but there were only enough dishes for two. Had to ask for blankets and pillows. There is no service unless you call for clean towels or to have your place vacuumed. Neither wall hairdryer worked in either suite. Breakfast is not served anymore indoors, but through a pass-through window. They are shortstaffed and staff works really hard and are very nice and accommodating. None of this, however, is acceptable for $600 a night!!! Rates should reflect Covid changes and go back to off-season rates. Won’t be staying here anymore. We will rent a house for less money instead.

As we mentioned in the letter, we hope that our cleaning procedures can return to normal by next year, but for now we have had to change our cleaning procedures to keep our staff safe while they are working. Sea and Sand Inn offers a million dollar view out the back, a great landscaped area to walk and have some wine or your continental breakfast and a million dollar walk along West Cliff ave that takes you along dramatic Califonia beach overlooks. It is its own destination with the wine an dcheese, breakfast an dgas insert fireplaces in the rooms. A 10 on a scale of 10 !

We arrived around 11 am, and asked if early check in was available. Renaldo said no problem! We were in our rooms very soon after that! The staff was soooo accommodating and friendly.

Teenagers next door were making noises until around 2 am. But overall, the soundproofing was ver good.

I had to take 1 point off for overall. We ended up having a group of teenagers stay next door, and they stayed up very late partying on their front patio. The issue is that the hotel rooms don't have air conditioning, but you don't need it if you keep your window open at night, as you go to sleep to the sound of ocean waves. My goodness that was wonderful.

But, because we needed to keep the window open for the cool air at night, we were kept awake by those previously mentioned teenagers. But, to the Sea and Sand's credit, the front desk did go and ask them to quiet down after I called to let them know. The young people did quieten down quite a bit after that, and we were able to finally get to sleep. But, we were woken again around 2 am with a loud yell. Then, it was quiet again.

I think that it would be great to have a "patio curfew" where you couldn't have more than 2 people out on the patio past 10 pm or so. That would help the other guests get better sleep.

Beds were extremely comfortable, and the rooms were very clean.

The biggest reasons I would recommend is the location and the comfort of the rooms. My favorite hotel I have ever stayed at. My favorite feature was the front patio where we could come in after a long day playing in the surf, and sit out in the perfect weather and enjoy our view of the beach. Just sit and read and drink a beer and listen to the ocean. An absolutely outstanding hotel and staff.

I consider it very safe. We have slept with the windows open and never feared for our safety. Plus whenever we go which is once a year it is a girls trip only. The place is fenced with security lock, your key so you really have no worries.

The bed was comfy. Didn't think about air conditioning because of the season. Would probably take one of the upper story rooms with a private balcony when I go again.

You'll have ask the hotel people your more specific questions. I can say that our room certainly provided ample space for the two of us,. It was clean and pleasingly appointed. The bed was very comfortable. And we both loved the fireplace. It goes without saying that the ocean view was spectacular.

Answer from calindauer
Benicia, California34 contributions13 helpful votes
There are not assigned parking spots. However, there are enough parking places, but I think there only as many parking spots as there are rooms. So if you get a visitor they will have to find on street parking near the hotel. We stayed there 4 nights and never had a problem finding a parking spot at the hotel.

I'm afraid the Sea & Sand does not allow pets. You might want to contact Visit Santa Cruz County for suggestions on pet-friendly hotels in the area.
