With stunning views of the San Francisco Bay, China Camp State Park, established in 1977, has 1,500 acres on the tip of the San Pedro Peninsula in San Rafael, CA. Its 15 miles of trails are available for runners, hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Unique to the Park is China Camp Village. The only one still standing of the two dozen that dotted the San Francisco Bay, this Chinese fishing village exported to China dried shrimp from the Village's establishment in 1868 until the 1920s.

China Camp is an interesting historical stop along the scenic drive traversing San Pablo Bay. This is one of our favorite places to take visiting guests to get a glimpse of early California. A educational tour of the buildings, a visual walk out on the pier or a refreshing picnic on the beach.

We have visited friends in San Rafael many times, and my husband lived in SF for 15 years - yet we had never heard of this park. We saw it in Trip Advisor and had a great morning. We took a nice easy hike, and enjoyed the very small but interesting shrimping village. Summer Sunday - hardly anyone was there. Beautiful!

Staying here was great. The sites were as described. The surrounding area is beautiful and there's lots of area to explore and hike. There was two drawbacks. The first being the food locker, they weren't critter proof. Inside there was a lot of mouse/rat dropping. So don't plan on using it. Also the walk from the parking lot to our site was torture with all our gear. They do provide a few totes to carry your stuff, but of course they were all being used. A wagon would come in handy. And we chose the last site on the loop. The bathrooms were clean and stocked with TP, but bring your own just in case. Also no paper towels so bring your own.

Response from Martin L, Executive Director at China Camp State Park
Responded Jan 25, 2017
Thank you for the review of your camping experience at China Camp State Park. As the operator of the park, Friends of China Camp is deeply appreciative to our volunteers, who renovate informational kiosks, food lockers, fences, bike repair stations, etc. We aim to maintain the campground food lockers so that they remain free from interested critters. We hope that, next time, you will have a higher level of cleanliness in the food locker. Please come visit us again soon!

My wife and I camped here for the night. The camping area is secluded under large bay trees and gives a sense of privacy. The individual sites have a picnic table, fire pit, and flat area to pitch a tent. Very little grass, so you are sleeping on the bare dirt. I saw many yellow jacket traps in trees, holding many bees. I did not notice any yellow jackets flying around. I saw a dozen deer wandering around. It was quiet after 10pm.

We camped here for 2 nights while in San Francisco. The campsite itself was pretty good - nice picnic bench, clean toilets and showers near the camp sites, etc. The cars had to be parked in a car park a few minutes walk away (not far just a bit of a trek with equipment and stuff). To be honest, it wasn't an ideal place to stay when we were visiting San Francisco but we were too late to book any site nearer. However, I would have loved to have time to explore the trails in China State Park. It looked like a great place to bring a family!

We booked 3 nights in this campground but as soon as we arrived we understood we could not stay in this place. There is no advice about bees and the whole campground is infested with them. We started to set up the tent and immediatly we were surrounded by them, also were the water faucets and trash cans. Also there is this warning about ticks, quite common in wilderness areas but you should be aware of this before booking. Although the park looks beautiful, quiet and the restrooms were well maintained and clean, we weren't aware that this is a walk-in site and the site we booked (13b) is quite far from the parking lot. I really think that it should be more clear in the reserveamerica web site. Finally, we didn't meet any camphost. There was no one here to clarify anything or help us to change the site nor anything. I wouldn't recommend this place to camp, maybe for a day stay could be fine.

This place is great!! We came late and without reservations but were met by the most adorable camp host's one could ask for!! They quickly accommodated us with a smile :) we were then immediately greeted by deer and bunnies, so cute!! Will be back and will recommend to others.

We recently stayed here for a friends birthday. There were 12 of us staying overnight and we had the first 2 plots. It didn't take too long to bring all the camping gear from the car park to our camp area. As we were one of the first plots it was a 3 minute wlk if in the top car park - word of advice... arrive early to park in the top car park otherwise it's an 8 minute walk from the lower car park. The camp had large clean wheeled trash cans to transport your camping get in. Only negative was being quiet from 10pm - however if you are a family this is probably a god send for you. We were able to whisper till midnight.

So glad I happened to google "state parks near me" while we were stopped for lunch. This is a beautiful park to drive through with tons of spots to pull off and stop for a bit. We weren't in hiking clothes but some short walks away were beaches and marshes and lots of natural beauty

I loved it from the start! Beautiful scenery and a great view to Sausalito harbour. Was there on a trip round Marin County, coming from Germany. What a lovely light and great silence all over...I would like to return to that place ...
