It wants to be hip but the expression lipstick on a pig applies here. Converted Howard Johnson hotel that the put up a few neon signs and odd props and called it chic. This really is a poor man’s version of a hip hotel with the cost of a five star. Rooms are a blend of your in laws extra room and an ICU with pull curtains. Bathrooms are tiny. Toilet is a foot from the shower. Room has a musty smell with random canvas sheets covering the walls. I would really like to talk to the designer and see if his concept was “Walmart eccentric”? Just cheaply done. Beds were awful, cheap cheap cheap. On a lighter note had lunch at the pool. Waiter was great, hostess more interested in her phone than seating customers. Front receptionist were very nice and check in was easy. Won’t go back nor recommend. Disappointed in this glorified motel experience.

We booked this hotel when planning a first time visit to Palm Springs. It appeared to be a bit retro, maybe a little campy. What a mistake staying at the Ace Hotel was. The building was originally a Howard Johnson’s. It’s not campy, it’s just old. Our room had a king size bed, which was very comfortable. However, the box spring was on little bitty legs, elevating the box spring about 2” off of the floor. Meaning the mattress was about 16” from the floor. Just the right height for a four year old. The room wasn’t much bigger than the bed, leaving enough room for a small table and two uncomfortable chairs. No dressers, upholstered furniture, or a luggage rack. The bathroom was so tiny that the sink was outside of the bathroom. And the SMELL. The room smelled like an old person’s attic; it smelled musty and old. The painters’ canvas covering the walls just added to the funky smell. We stayed from Tuesday to Saturday. On the Thursday we were there, there was a wedding at the hotel. Not in a separate wing or floor from the rest of the hotel, but approximately 100 feet from our room. It was outside by the pool, on a cement deck for maximum amplification of the EXTREMELY LOUD DJ. By 10 pm, we had enough and called the front desk. We were told that there had been other complaints, but the couple had booked the pool deck until 2 am. 2 am!!!! They did ask the wedding party to turn the volume down a bit. It was still quite loud. And late. Why would the management book a party until 2 am and then place other guests so close to the party? On Friday evening there was another wedding on the pool deck. This time the music was so loud we couldn’t hear the television in our room. When we complained about the noise, we were told that it would only be until 10 pm tonight. But the staff wouldn’t ask the wedding party to turn down the volume because, well, it was their wedding. We paid way too much money to stay at the Ace Hotel and will never make that mistake again. It was like staying next to a backwater bingo hall with an all night bingo caller. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, when it was quiet enough to sleep. We waited 2 years to make this trip. Like everyone else, our plans were put on hold due to the pandemic. The whole area makes for a fantastic vacation. However, if looking for a restful night’s sleep, the Ace Hotel would not be a good choice. There were many other shortcomings; but they all pale in comparison to the weddings that virtually took place in my hotel room.

We love this place. I’ve stayed here at least 20 times over the last ten years. The staff is always friendly and makes everyone feel welcome. There’s two pools and awesome cocktails. The Kings Highway restaurant is great for breakfast lunch and dinner. Del Mar restaurant is up the street. They have the tapas and freaking fabulous drinks. Check out Mr. Lyons as well for a special occasion dinner. Also get the patio room with a fire place. Perfect for enjoying a book or stargazing.

First off, the good! The burger you'll have at King's Highway Restaurant is the best burger you'll ever have in your life. Not kidding. Also, they've done a great job at keeping the midcentury Palm Springs vibe of this old HoJo hotel, but updating it (exteriors and interiors) to be very cool and casual, with a nod and a wink to the slight kitsch factor of the midcentury vibe. Even the small single room (king size bed) was spacious enough for one (although I wouldn't say for two). The bad, though... and this was a big factor when I was recently there... the A/C did not work well. And when it's 116 degrees outside, you need a hotel that has reliable, solid A/C. When I got into the room it was 71 degrees but humid and still, and the A/C was set to its lowest point/highest fan - curtains were closed, no heat or light coming in before I arrived - and it was incredibly stuffy. I tried to adjust the A/C but to no avail and the front desk said that the A/C was trying to work extra hard because of the heat, so they sent an engineer up to check it - but he wasn't able to adjust anything. In retrospect, I should've asked for a couple of fans. So sleeping was uncomfortable because it was so warm in the room. This factor alone will keep me from staying there again: in Palm Springs, you need really good A/C. Period. In August when it's 116 degrees outside and still 97 in the middle of the night - like it's always been in Palm Springs since the beginning of time - you need solid A/C. I will say that the A/C worked fine in the restaurant and bar. The hotel did waive the "resort fee" of $40 for the night because of the A/C problem, which was a charge I wasn't familiar with: I booked a room rate of $160 for the night. But it turns out that the room is $160 but then there's a $40 "resort fee" tacked on, so the room rate is actually $200 for the night. It was nice of them to waive that, but I would've rather just had a room that was a little cooler and more comfortable. So it's a neat place, it's cute and kitschy, it's got a great design and a fun vibe to it and 2 pool areas and a killer restaurant - but they really need to upgrade the A/C on site. Just be aware if you're there during the really hot months.

I decided to make an overnight trip to PS so stayed here. I’ve been to the Ace in DTLA so was familiar with what they were all about. The PS location was great, it has a cool retro motel thing going on, everyone was cool (from guests all the way to staff), room AC worked awesomely, and I LOVED the free Tesla charging. Food was great, and prices were very fair. One gripe I have, though, is since this is a renovated old motel (with outward facing doors as opposed to doors facing hallways), I could literally hear everything from people chirping their car alarms to people walking by, to people having just normal volume convos outside my door. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep much bc I kept getting woken up. I guess I could have used earplugs but I prefer not to for safety reasons. Other than that, I thought it was a great place, and people were “well mannered” and not all drunk and rowdy. Chill vibes, but I only wish I could’ve gotten some sleep! Lol.
