Detailed Reviews
My husband and I visited Monterey for our first wedding anniversary and stayed here based on a Fodor's recommendation. While we did like our room, which was large and quiet and comfortable, we were surprised by how unhelpful the staff were. I had called beforehand to ask if there was anything special they could put in our room to surprise my husband for our anniversary, and the man working the desk seemed confused and told me to order "a meat and cheese plate" from a local florist (definitely not what I had in mind!). When we got there we asked for a recommendation for somewhere to have dinner, and the woman at the desk also seemed super weirded out by that very normal question. Since they're not doing normal service during COVID times, we called on our second day to request more coffee pods and shampoo and conditioner, which we were assured would be brought to us right away. We waited an hour, called again, and then thirty minutes after that got some coffee only. Checking out seemed to inconvenience them. Really weird! If they just had a better attitude I would rate this place a five.

We arrived early and were given an "upgraded" room with no wait or extra $$. It was a corner room which was clean & quiet. There were nice touches, like real glasses & thermal ice bucket (not plastic with a bag), good bed linens & thick, thick, thirsty towels. It was hot outside, but the AC worked well.
There was no dining room service due to Covid, but a limited menu was available for pick-up. It was just a short walk to the Marina area with plenty of restaurants and outside seating. There were many shops and even a Trader Joes a few blocks away! The Denny's across the street was fine for breakfast before we departed.
We'll absolutely return again for several nights after Covid.

We enjoyed a weeks stay at Casa Munras while visiting family in area. The location was perfect for walking to great restaurants and near Fishermen wharf and other local attractions. The room was quite large as they gave us a handicap room (for some reason) It had no rooms above us and no room on one side so very quiet.
Wireless was a bit weak but not a huge issue. Housekeeping was terrific and we chose to have them come every other day. The parking charge daily rate of $17.00 was a surprise but still worth it for the ease. The pool was clean and not busy when we wanted to enjoy the sun.
The Wild Plum across the street was perfect for morning coffee and delicious breakfast. We enjoyed the best Thai dinner in a little out of the way place called Siamese Bay just 2 blocks away on Webster St.
We recommend this historical hotel!!

Hello, Thank you for the review and comments, we will share this feedback with our team. In regard to the parking fee, it has always been our practice to be transparent regarding the fees our guests pay and do so by including this fee on our website under the Services we provide, as well as having it listed on 3rd party websites and informing guests upon check-in. We apologize that this fee was not anticipated. We are glad to hear our staff was very helpful and you had an overall lovely and quiet time staying with us, as well as, enjoyed our location. We look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Sincerely, Management of the Inns of Monterey

We stayed here for 3 nights and were somewhat disappointed. Check-in was fast & friendly, and there was ample free parking close to you room, however parking is very tight for larger vehicles. There is an upscale restaurant on the grounds, as well as a Denny’s, and coffee shop/bakery across the street.
The room (#160) itself was well laid out with a comfortable bed, flat screen TV with DVD player and desk. There is a safe, refrigerator and Keurig coffee maker. The bathroom was somewhat cramped and there is no shower per-se; it is a tub with shower, so if you have mobility issues, take this into consideration.
Our main complaint is that this is the first time we have stayed in a hotel without daily housekeeping. We do not travel with cleaning supplies, and living in a room for three days with no way to clean a bathroom, the area to make coffee etc. seems contrary to current issues with cleanliness and sanitizing. The trash cans in the room are full, and we have to call for clean towels and paper supplies.
Have prices for rooms been reduced with this important amenity taken away?

We would have been better off staying at another hotel that suited our needs but Casa Munras didn’t provide us all of the information we needed to make that decision. A decision that would have better suited our family.
I don’t appreciate hotels conveniently and purposefully leaving facts about your stay out of the room description.
You can tell right away a hotel is not customer friendly when they use the word “sorry” within the first five minutes of checking-in. Just as soon as your credit card is locked, loaded and swiped you are no longer the customer they are trying to attract, you are now the imposition.
Don’t wait until your customer has checked-in, paid for the room, is walking down the hall toward their room with all of their luggage in hand, to then have a hotel staff member come out of the wood work to “manage” your guests after they find out there is going to be no elevator and that we will be carrying our infant son, his stroller and all of our luggage up and down two flights of stairs (multiple times a day) for four days.
It should have been pointed out to us at the front desk while I stood there with my husband wheeling a stroller behind me, or when I asked the clerk for a luggage cart. Why wasn’t I told about the elevator then? Probably for the same reason it is not noted in the room description. Because they know people won’t stay there. So instead they trick you.
Don’t use the excuse that Casa Munras is a historic hotel. I’ve stayed at plenty of historic hotels and they all had elevators and if they didn’t they made it clear to their guests before staying there.
This major inconvenience left my husband with a bad back from all of the lifting.
Additionally, don’t expect the front desk to assist you in your stay. Again, you are not a guest you are a nuisance after you have checked-in. If you need any towels, extra blankets for the bed bring your own. They will make sure to leave you in the cold. Learn to fend for yourself at this hotel. Additionally, housekeeping doesn’t understand that knocking at the door first is customary before entering.
If the owners of this hotel are too cheap to put in an elevator then notify your guests about this massive inconvenience in the room description.
Don’t expect much of this hotel.

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of our California road trip.
Room was large and spacious with a large bathroom area and lots of parking outside the room.
The hotel is large so depending on where your room is you could be a way from the reception/restaurant area.
We saw the pool area which looked nice but the weather wasn’t quite warm enough for us to use.
The hotel location was good for easy access to restaurants, bars and the old fisherman’s wharf. We did though drive to Cannery Row as that was too far to walk.
Only downside for us was the lack of daily servicing . This was known to us in advance but with most restrictions now lifted - we seemed to be paying a premium for a high end hotel but without the additional daily housekeeping - which for me is a nice luxury when on holiday.
Hopefully this will return quickly .

Casa Munras is a very well maintained, classic motor inn from (I'm going to guess) the 1960s. For the second time we ate dinner at the Spanish restaurant in the main building. Tasty tapas menu though worth noting that it is noticeably overpriced, and I am comparing to my hometown prices in San Francisco.
My wife and I stayed in a second floor room in the center of the large complex, so we were well insulated from any noise from the surrounding neighborhood. The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed the ensuite fireplace. In the morning, I fetched a coffee and sat on the balcony in the warm sun. Delightful. Casa Munras wasn't our first choice in Monterey, but as it was Thanksgiving week, there weren't many other options available. In the end, we were mostly pleasantly surprised.
The one downside has become a real pet peeve of mine. Though they call it a "hotel and spa", Casa Munras is really a classy motel, designed originally with plenty of parking so that guests could pull up right to the door of their rooms. The very layout of the place is designed around the automobile. So, after paying in advance for two rooms (our daughter and her boyfriend were traveling with us), I was hit with a daily parking fee of $17. Not a huge charge by itself these day (compared to the room at $190 and the dinner for four at $300), but to my mind an act of disrespect by management toward guests.
If you are in Manhattan for example, where onsite parking is rare and few travelers arrive by rental car, I understand a parking fee. However, for a motor inn with at least one parking space for every room, it is pushy to charge to park. It comes across as tacky and greedy. What's next: a laundry charge if we decide to use a towel when we shower?
I know this may seem like a petty complaint, but I see the proliferation of these BS charges and it makes me unhappy. If they need ways to increase revenue, why can't hotel managers just raise their room rates and include parking? But that will make the room rates less competitive in comparison to other lodging choices. So instead, they seem to prefer to nickel and dime guests like me and leave us feeling less than completely satisfied about our stay.

Hello, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. We were all disappointed to learn your most recent stay was not what you had expected. Regarding the parking fee, it has always been our practice to be transparent regarding the fees our guest pay, and we make sure that our guests are charged for only want they want and use. Some properties, including some of our neighboring hotels, use a "resort fee" to charge guests for amenities, whether they are used or not. Out of respect to our guests, we feel that it is unfair to charge for something that is not wanted or used, and as such, we offer optional amenities and services, such as parking, separately. The satisfaction of our guests is our highest priority, and we appreciate all your feedback and have shared it with our Management Team. We hope you allow us another opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Sincerely, Casa Munras Garden Hotel & Spa

Checked in last minute on a road trip Southward. Nearly everything on this trip cost more than I expected but this review is based on the relative value for money for the area. Nice friendly arrival (great cookies!), great sized room which was clean and comfortable. If you're passing through to see the aquarium as we were, this is a great simple option. Didn't use the spa so can't comment on that.

We chose Esteban for their beautiful outdoor dining area. We were very pleased with the service. CJ, was our server and gave us wonderful recommendations on a couple of the vegetarian dishes, and answered any questions we had on the menu. Anna was the bartender on duty that evening and made my husband the best boss Anna Margarita he has ever had. I highly recommend Esteban. My family and I felt very safe there. Everybody was practicing social distancing and wearing their face coverings. I love the disposable menus. We are a local family and have always had a wonderful experience at Esteban. Anna, Always makes our visit extra special.

When we walked into the room the wood floor was covered with dirt, dust, leaves and hair. When we walked into the handicapped access bathroom the cleaner was still in the toilet bowl and every handrail had oily hand/finger prints on them. There was a small lighted makeup mirror, covered in dust and fingerprints. Luckily I brought my own cleaning supplies and spent a good 20 minutes cleaning every surface because at that point I did not trust the cleaning job at all. I then hunted up housekeeping staff and asked for a broom. I know that times are tough for the service industry, hotels in particular but there are standards to be upheld and I see them slipping. I’m really hoping this was a one-off for Casa Munras as I will have to consider where I stay next time I visit Monterey. I found the stay unacceptable as far as that first-impression when you walk in the door……add on to that….the room was over $200.00 a night. One more thing, the linens and furniture were clean but VERY old and the room had a slight odor of cigarettes.
