Starting with the pros - It's right in the heart of Monterey. Room was big with a living area and a dining area. Big bathroom with separate bathtub and shower. Other than these, I can't find other reasons to stay at this place. Cons - ~ Lodging at Monterey is expensive, but this place is claiming to be a 4-star hotel and charging such rate, while it is really a motel. It looks pretty in pictures, but it's old full of wear and tear. ~ The room was cold even with the heater turned on. ~ The shampoo bottle in my room was completely empty. It's a big (at least 16 oz) bottle installed on the shower stall wall. How long could the housekeeping not refilling for a big bottle to be completely emptied? ~ Wi-Fi was extremely bad in my room. It was very weak the first night, and couldn't connect at all on the second day. I didn't report the Wi-Fi issue because that was my last day, and I was in a hurry of needing Wi-Fi to get work done. Good Wi-Fi is the basic requirement nowadays. ~ Parking space was extremely tight even for a standard size sedan. With its room rate, it's just not worth saying at this place. If there were availabilities of other hotel, I would pay a little more going to Portola or Marriott.

Hotel's Favorite
My husband and I recently enjoyed a great 3-night stay at the unique and special Hotel Pacific in Downtown Monterey. We have stayed at this hotel several times over the past 30 years and always found it to be a a favorite destination in a great location. It has many qualities that we look for in a smaller, more relaxing hotel. We were glad to return to Hotel Pacific and have an outstanding experience once again. First of all, the staff is friendly, responsive, knowledgeable and very helpful. The Junior Suite king bed room layout is exceptional for a smaller hotel like this. It is spacious with a dining area that was also perfect for working comfortably on a laptop, a delightful gas fireplace, a spacious living room sitting area and a very nice bedroom area. The kitchen was stocked with nice dishes and wine glasses with a refrigerator and microwave, allowing us to bring in some local cuisine to enjoy. We appreciated the hardwood floors and the attractive tile surround on the fireplace. The TV in the room conveniently rotates to face both the living room and the bedroom as needed. There was also a nice-sized patio area which we enjoyed as well. The underground parking is easy and we were able to park close to the elevator and our room. We loved the more than ample Continental Breakfast each morning with eggs, bacon, fresh fruit, a variety of breads and bagels and more, served in their three spacious meeting rooms near the lobby. There were many nice outdoor seating areas on the property as well as a steaming jacuzzi area. We loved the charming and attractive tile pathways throughout the hotel. The hotel is located near Old Fisherman’s Wharf for whale watching and fishing excursions, great restaurants and cute shops, walking distance on the Rec Trail to Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Lower Presidio Historic Park, a variety of historic Monterey State Historic Park buildings to tour and Downtown Monterey with its Golden State Theatre, restaurants and pubs and additional State Park gardens, adobes and other buildings to enjoy. Hotel Pacific also rents bicycles that make it even easier to explore the area, without moving your car! It is also only a 10-minute drive to Carmel by the Sea and Pacific Grove and their beautiful beaches, shops and restaurants. Over the years, we have recommended this hotel to our friends who have always enjoyed the experience! Check it out next time you are planning to stay on the Monterey Peninsula.

Let me start by saying from start to finish it was all bad. We usually love this hotel and have been coming for years and come multiple times per year despite the rising prices and less amenities. To start we arrived early and while I know they don't guarantee early check in we did not get called until 4pm to check in. At check in we were going back and forth over the available rooms and the manager had told the staff to give us a room on the 3rd floor, but she gave us one on the 2nd and we did not want to wait any longer so we took it. It was adequate. As we got in the elevator to go to our room the railing was broken with a sharp protruding piece that caught my wife's shirt and ripped it. There was no effort to remove it or cover it to not hurt people. We mentioned it and no one seemed to care or apologize. Then when we were leaving for dinner and went down the stairs to the path a hand rail was also broken with exposed rusty metal that we almost cut ourselves on. Again we mentioned it and nothing. When we got back overall it was an ok experience but nothing special. The next morning we were getting ready and my wife was in the bathroom and started to feel water drip on her head. She looked up and water was falling through the light fixtures in 2 spots. We recorded it too. She called the front desk to complain and was told maintenance did not get in till after 10. My wife told her it was a safety concern and could get electrocuted and we couldn't use the shower, and she had no response or answer. We got dressed and left. and could not even shower. We decided to go have breakfast before we left and were surprised to see it was a basic continental with dry muffins. We are use to a hot breakfast, but they seem to only do that on weekends now, so disappointing. At check out the front desk could only comp our parking and said I could call back later to talk to the manager and he was not going to be back for 3 days. When we called back the manager said he wanted to make it up to us on our future stay. We called yesterday to see about what they were going to do to compensate for an upcoming stay and all we were given was a $50 discount and free parking. We were very surprised and shocked by this. I was thinking of calling OSHA back in September, but hadn't.... maybe I should have. I have been in retail for 34 years and this is not how you treat customers. We weren't given a free room for a couple nights or nothing. If I could I'd give them a negative 1 star, but had to give at least 1 star to write a review.

A really neat hotel. Thankful the weather was cool as there are no rooms with AC. Very nice front desk folks. Underground parking was tight. Our large suite had a balcony with double french doors and a fireplace. Also a table with 4 chairs, a refrigerator, a wet bar, a large bathroom with the sink/vanity separate from the toilet and shower, and a comfortable king bed. We would stay here again, as long as it was fall/winter/spring. Summer would be unpleasant without AC.

Location is good for downtown but a 30 min walk from Cannery row. Basic motel feel but large rooms which was great. parking is a 22 dollar charge per night. As a budget option if was fine but I would not choose it again and maybe pay the bit extra to stay nearer cannery row. There is no amenities in the hotel and basic breakfast in the meeting room area outside the hotel.

This place was expensive, so we thought it'd be a premium hotel. We were wrong. It gives the feeling of an old beach motel. Clearly the price we paid was mainly for location. The sleep quality was terrible. Something about the way Hotel Pacific is built made it the absolute *loudest* hotel we've ever stayed in. If I didn't get out of bed and check that the door was closed, I would have sworn it was wide open. I think it's a combination of cheap maybe hollow doors and the floor plan having no hallways, with the units encircling and opening directly to an outside courtyard. It makes it so any noise anywhere in the hotel echos and amplifies off the sound-reflective exterior stucco walls, reaches every one of the rooms, penetrates the cheap doors, and wakes you up in the night. There was a family playing some kind of board game in the courtyard around 9~10 pm. In reality they weren't being *that* loud, but we could hear *everything* while trying to get to sleep. We asked the front desk to nicely ask them to play more quietly, but nothing happened. It became humorous to my partner and I as we tried to sleep every night and were treated to the cacophony of every single noise made anywhere in the hotel. It was impressive, and we had to laugh at the absurdity of the price we paid for such a low quality building. Next, the pillows were dead---deflated and clumpy. God only knows how old they were. When we called the front desk and asked for two different pillows, they sent someone with only one. He said it was the only pillow they had left. Not only that, but this extra pillow was just as bad as the ones we already had. How ludicrous is it that a $450/night hotel hasn't replaced their pillows in probably a decade and has only one extra pillow for the entire establishment? There's also no air conditioning. Okay, the hotel is old. I could understand not retrofitting A/C if we were paying less than $300/night. But we honestly figured at such an immense price there would have been renovations to bring it up to standard. Again, the building itself is just low quality and not worth the price we paid. The front desk told us they'd bring us a fan... and then never showed up. Onto little annoyances, there was no towel rack in the bathroom, no wine glasses, and a matchbox with only two matches for us to try out the fireplace. With this, the pillows, the failure to bring us a fan after saying they would... there's not even good management to make up for the poor building quality. The location *was* excellent. In retrospect, that's clearly what we paid for, not the quality of the hotel. We were centrally located within walking distance of both Old Fisherman's Wharf and the aquarium. And believe me, we couldn't wait to walk out of the hotel every day. At first we were upset but got to the point where we just had to enjoy the location and laugh at how massively wrong we were in thinking almost half a grand a night would get us more than a motel. I stayed here last year and just now found the overlap between remembering and having the time to write the review. As you can see, I needed a good amount of time to detail all the issues.

Found a bag with syringes and drug paraphernalia upon check-in I immediately called the front desk and asked if a manger can come to look at something I found in my room that was disturbing. I was told no manager was on duty. I took the bag to the front desk and asked for the manager to call me when he was available. I stayed at this hotel 3 days, every time I went near the front desk I asked for the manager and was told he was not available. Upon check out I once again stated I wanted this issue addressed and was told the manager would call me at my home. Well after 35 days the manger Mr. Anderson called my home and made various excuses as to why it took him so long to respond. He further stated he was going to refund me one night and one car parking fee for one night. It should be noted I rented 4 rooms for over $6,000. They are very lucky a child did not find these syringes and no one got injured by their negligence. As of today no refund, maybe it will take another 35 days before I hear from him.

We have stayed here numerous times over the years. This hotel is starting to get dated.... the outdoor corridors need to be painted, the stairs are quite squeaky, and the walls on the exterior are in poor shape. Our stay did not start off very well. We always show up to hotels early and we understand that rooms will most likely not be ready until check-in time. The past two times (including this time) we had to wait 45 minutes past check-in to get the keys to our room. I really don't want to hear that "some of our housekeepers didn't show up to work today" -- excuses are NOT good when this has now happened two times in a row (we stayed in December and the same thing happened -- we had to wait 45+ minutes then, too). The room was decent and is a great size. One thing that gets to me are the small details -- the toilet seat was old, the pictures on the walls were not straight, the floor behind the toilet was dirty, and the furniture on the balcony had bird poop on them! I brought this up to the front desk and the lady stated that she would "let housekeeping know"..... We did have a very nice stay, but these small things need to be changed to bring this rating up

What a great time we had at Hotel Pacific! Our room was spotless, beds so comfortable, grounds beautiful and staff wonderful. Location is fantastic, close to wharf, cannery row, Monterey Aquarium. We having been going to Hotel Pacific with our children and now our grandchildren. But haven’t been there for awhile. I had read some reviews that were not good and was very surprised by them, but we didn’t experience any of them. Go and stay at Hotel Pacific it’s a great place to stay while visiting beautiful Monterey.
