Nestled along a picturesque beachfront, the Monterey Beach Hotel garners praise for its warm, inviting ambiance and stylish decor. While many guests appreciate the modern rooms and professional service, some have raised concerns about room size, privacy, noise, and cleanliness inconsistencies. The beachfront location and amenities like cozy fire pits and a chic bar are popular, yet additional fees and unmet expectations have left a few guests questioning the value. Overall, the hotel offers a charming retreat with stunning ocean views.

Usually stay at Marriott in Monterey, but decided to try Monterey Beach Hotel since some family was staying here and it is now part of the Bonvoy family. Everything was nicely appointed, spotlessly clean and staff was friendly and well-trained. Good stuff: Location- It’s an EZ on, EZ off the highway and just a 5 min drive from the cannery area. Food and beverage- The top floor restaurant is consistently good and enjoyed both breakfast and dinner there. We don’t usually eat breakfast, but did the first morning and continued to return because the offerings were so good. Bar makes some nice drinks and a really tasty top shelf margarita. View- The views of the bay and waves coming in are dramatic and relaxing when enjoying the plentiful lounging areas in the lobby and bar areas. Bedding- we found our mattress and linens very comfortable. The bad stuff: Layout- This is a rehabbed “motor lodge style” property with all the rooms having entry doors facing out on exterior walkways which means noise and if you have splurged for an “ocean view,” you may see it from your room’s window, but not a “private balcony.” AC- hate the sensor thermostats that turn off the cool air in the middle of the night, but they are everywhere now. Fees- $40/day to park on surface parking lot and $25/day “amenities fee”- not sure what exactly that covered, but expect $65/day more than the quoted rate off the bat if u have a car. Bar hours- seemed like it opened late and closed earlier than we would find ideal. Bathroom- All the materials and fixtures were nice, but the enclosed area was so small u can’t stand in front of the toilet and open the door to exit. All in all, the freshness of the place and the service made it, but I won’t try it again next year after the shine has worn off- plenty of places with ocean views that don’t have exterior hallways.

Greetings CnKtravelin, Thank you for joining us here on the beach and for your loyalty to Marriott. We’re glad that you gave us the opportunity to welcome you and that you found several elements of our experience to be outstanding, including our dining options, location, unparalleled views of the ocean, comfortable beds, and more. We, of course, would have loved for everything you experienced on-site to have supported your satisfaction just as much, and will discuss internally items like our amenity hours and how we can continue to champion transparency regarding our property’s policies. It would be a delight to welcome you again, whether it be for an overnight stay or a memorable meal here on the water. While you’re correct in noting that many hotels have views of the ocean, next to none in our state are actually situated on the beach. So, if you find yourself missing that perk and the others that enhanced your recent visit, know that our doors are open to you! Cheers, Nathan Hanner

Great location, oceanside hotel, great price, modernized small family friend boutique hotel. The restaurants onsite have great food. You do not need to travel far. They also have a wine caddy $25 a day with wonderful wine all over central coast. The plus is that the customer service is very family, personalized. Kimmy was our server and she really took good care of us. Attention to detail, very caring for her customers, like you are friends with her, recommended places to go and eat, just warm hearted, even though it was pretty busy she took her time to get to know you. Thanks so much for an amazing service! I can say we’ve stayed at the Ritz Carlton a few times, and the customer service is similar or better. We’ll be back again!

This remodeled hotel has a lot of potential but it does need work. The location is amazing since it is directly on the beach. The rooms are small with very small bathrooms. Would highly recommend getting an ocean view room since that makes up for the size of the room. You hear the waves crashing from your room even with everything closed. Bed is comfortable and plenty of towels are provided. Towels are thick. Nice tv that offers casting. Now to the things that need improvement in the rooms. Our room was clean but had a very bad odor. Housekeeping was gone so nothing could be done. Front desk did offer us another room but after a very long drive, we were too tired to move rooms. No vanity amenities are offered like Q-tips, makeup remover wipes, etc. Robes are not provided which would really help if you want to use the pool or spa. We did not get housekeeping during our stay. I was very disappointed to find our room in the same condition that we left it after a very long day out. The front desk person apologized and comped our parking fee. The parking fee is $45 which seems a bit excessive.
We booked this hotel because it had electric vehicle chargers but cars were just left there after charging was completed so we had to go to an EV charger somewhere else and pay to charge.
Restaurant was very good with great views, good food and service. Prices are on the high side.
Gym was very nice with plenty of equipment and even Peloton bikes but no water provided.
Lots of fire pits offered. Overall, a nice stay.

Greetings choosey1, We were delighted to welcome you to Monterey and thank you for your feedback. Items like our beach location, comfortable beds, and memorable dining experiences are often lauded by our guests, so, we’re glad those perks left an impression on you as well. Our team would have loved for other dimensions of your stay to have resonated just as perfectly and will discuss the entirety of your comments internally to see where we may be able to more greatly serve our guests’ diverse needs. Upon your next visit, certainly expect a more streamlined start to your stay and greater consistency in tending to your room, alongside, of course, other small but meaningful betterments we trust will make our home your go-to place to stay on central California’s coast. In the interim, know that we’re wishing you continued success in your travels. Cheers, Nathan Hanner

While this hotel has some beautiful features, my experience was ultimately disappointing, especially considering the price. The location is undeniably stunning, with a beach that feels private and the sound of waves crashing from your room. The decor is tasteful, and the ambiance is inviting, with charming sitting areas and firepits throughout the property.

However, several issues detracted from the overall experience. The WiFi was unreliable and slow, which made it difficult to stay connected. Additionally, while the beach view is lovely, the room’s windows face a public walkway, meaning anyone passing by can see in, leaving little to no privacy.

The biggest disappointment was the service. I encountered several delays, such as waiting over four hours for housekeeping to address ants in the room and six hours for an iron to be delivered. These long waits made it feel like staff were overwhelmed or not prioritizing guest needs. Additionally, I had an unpleasant interaction with a bartender, which added to the frustration.

While the property has potential with its location and design, improvements in service and privacy considerations are necessary before I could recommend it.

Greetings, We appreciate you taking a moment to let us know how your stay went. We’re glad that our unique disposition here on the beach served as a bright spot during your visit, alongside some of the elements of our property’s motif. We would have, of course, loved for our hospitality experience and your interfacing with our amenities to have been just as stellar. We apologize for falling short on those fronts and will discuss the whole of that feedback internally to better understand what went wrong. Should we have the joy of seeing you again, we want you to expect more from that stay as we’re fully committed to getting things right and to your satisfaction. We’re wishing you wonderful travels until that return visit comes to pass. Cheers, Nathan Hanner

Hotel looks fantastic. Superb location. Smells lovely when you check in. Rooms are comfortable, funky & modern.

But there were issues.

Issues arose as soon as we arrived. We had to pay $40 to park the car overnight!

We were told that the fire pits for roasting marshmallows would be available between 7-8pm. We swung by on our way to dinner at 7.15, no sign of anyone. To be fair we didn’t find anyone to light them, didn’t think we had to though.

Noticed before going to bed that the bin in the bathroom had not been emptied. Inside it was a used (wrapped) sanitary towel. Clearly the cleaners were not paying attention.

Signs up everywhere saying that there are ice baths and sauna. Went to use them after a morning run to be told that they were not installed yet! They shouldn’t be advertising amenities if they’re not available.

Plus there was no shower gel in the bathroom.

I raised these issues with reception. The member of staff was helpful and said she would speak with management. Upon checkout, we were offered a refund of the parking and resort fee only. Which I suppose is the minimum they can offer.

It was shame. Otherwise this would have easily been an 5* star review.

Overcrowded hotel with very little available parking. When we arrived the line was blocking the door and the lobby was packed full of guests waiting. After 20 minutes in line we were told the "housekeeping was running way behind "at 4:30pm so it would be another hour for a room to be ready even though we had reservations and room is supposedto be ready by 4pm. My family and I also had dinner reservations but had to sit with our luggage in the hotel lobby after being on the road since 8:45am. All they could offer was an apology. I've never seen a hotel not have a room ready. Appalled by this hotel. Do not stay here.

This is by far the worst hotel on the face of the earth. It is the equivalent of putting lipstick on a pig. It is completely obvious that this was a shady hotel on the beach built in the 1960’s. The rooms are tiny and the bathrooms are so tight, it is ridiculous that the hotel exists.

If the rooms are going to be this tight, then they should offer complimentary coffee and breakfast to make up for the tiniest rooms in the world and the overpriced rate. But, instead, they charge you 14 bucks for two gross coffees.

In addition, when we stayed for two nights, we never received house keeping services.

The beach access is nice but the Dead Sea lion and the intense spray of the ocean made me feel as if I was on a horrible, cheap, disgusting cruise.

Upon pain of death, I would never, ever spend the night here unless I was paid money. Even then, I would take a long pause.

When we complained about the price vs the value, the Dead Sea lion, and the maid service we were offered 30,000 bonvoy points. However, it has been two months and we have never received these points.

We are Bonvoy members for the past 15 years and have stayed in 100s of different Marriott properties. This is by far the worst and should be avoided at all costs.

Greetings Annie, Thank you for sharing your feedback touching on your stay from a couple of months back. While the majority of those who join us celebrate our private beach access, attentive team, and the recent renovations our property has undergone, it’s clear you were not as touched by those qualities, and may be experiencing challenges with the promise of loyalty points you’ve referenced. We’re happy to look into that and anything else you may want to discuss. To that end, please contact us directly with your concerns so we can better assist you. Nathan.hanner@montereybeach.com is a great address to reach me directly and I’m sure we can get your experience right-tracked from there. Your loyalty as a Bonvoy member is appreciated and we hope we might have another opportunity to better support your travels through Monterey in the future. Until then, we’re wishing you the best. Could not believe all the extra charges/taxes! We were quoted $20 per night for the dog. We were not told about the $150 fee for the dog for the stay. Then we had to pay taxes on top of that. Was not told we had to pay to park there either, $40 per night plus tax. We paid $431.23 for two nights on top of the room charges. The room was nice, nothing special. The grounds were great with outside fire pits, couches, pillows, tables and benches and right on the beach. With that being said, people partied there late into the night right outside our room! The restaurants were really good, however they were very expensive, $300 for two meals with me and my husband splitting the meals! Our stay did come with $50 credit for the wine bar, yoga on the beach, 2 hr electric bike rental which we did not partake in, we did get s'mores, barely a small baggies worth!

Location is great for those with ocean view rooms but this place falls short of its price point. Bad decisions include 1) power washing the pool area for hours on a sunny Saturday afternoon (the noise was overwhelmingly horrible), 2) no bathroom/changing area near the pool, 3) no robes in the rooms, and 4) no food or beverages available on premises from 11am till 5 pm each day, and 5) no out door patio heaters.

Also it can’t escape its basic architecture - it’s a motel and all rooms open to public walkways. You can’t leave your shades open without being on display to all who walk by.

Not a terrible place but not worth the current price point.

We do apologize for the inconvenience you’ve noted. Some items, like your concerns about our food and beverage options, could have been resolved via better communication on our end as our Lobby Lounge is open from 11 to 11, offering guests access to elevated pub fare and more. We’d love to share that amenity and other new ones that are making their way to our home on the water soon. To that end, if we have the privilege of seeing you back, know that we’d relish it. The views are incredible. It is worth staying for that BUT a few things to note:
The service staff were underwhelming. It took them nearly 3 hours to get our room ready. After the regular 4pm check in time. First they asked "you have 2 queen beds, do you need those beds?" We are a family of 4, so YES! After numerous "another 30 minutes", they did eventually give us credits for the parking fee and a food credit for breakfast. The room was small and the bathroom was so dark. The beds were comfortable and the view right outside the door of the beach, ocean and Monterrey was AWESOME. Undecided if I'd return, but probably would just for the views and sitting by the beach at night.
