Detailed Reviews
I frequently travel to Monterey for work in water infrastructure. My company has a tight travel budget, and I always try to book Lone Oak Lodge when rooms are available. I've probably stayed there about 10 times this past year. I also stayed in the suite with a kitchen with some friends on a weekend trip.
My main priorities with budget hotels are cleanliness and avoiding "sketchiness". I really love that Lone Oak Lodge is extremely clean, and their primary clientele seem to be families and divers. I like that many of the rooms have hardwood floor--it just makes it all feel cleaner and it's easy to do workouts in my room (I always travel with my yoga mat). I am a woman staying by myself, and I feel very safe. The prices are extremely good during weekdays and is by far the best deal you can get in Monterey.
Because you park right in front of your room (a huge perk during the pandemic), there is sometimes some vehicle noise, and sometimes the heaters can be a bit loud. I just sleep with my phone playing white noise, and it hasn't been an issue. I once worked a night shift and slept for 10 hrs straight during the day. Sometimes the showers can be challenging to figure out how to work, but they are always hot with good water pressure. The wifi is also strong in every room, and I can do work on my computer without an issue.
The family running Lone Oak are wonderful, friendly people who are extremely welcoming and accommodating. If you book directly through their website, it's easier to make changes to your trip.

I spent 2 weeks vacating in California last late April, from SF to LA, stayed in 4 hotels and this was the single one that did chores at my rooms every day, for almost a week, And gee, they maid service was also awesome, in the details they folded the towels and even the toilette paper.
This staff will did absolutely nothing else than their regular duties, but they also did not take a tip I left in the middle of my stay, weird, but convenient.
The rooms also feel cleaner by not having carpets but being laminated, a nice one. It's also great all the roofs are covered with solar panels. The rooms themselves are not luxurious by any means, but still look good, everything looks new.
Despite being in the lower range of prices, almost all the other guests were quit. I only underwent a lightly noisy night, which I easily ignored with earplugs.

The 2 room suite worked out perfect for our small family. The lodge is a combination of old single rooms and two room suites. The bedroom was furnished properly and bed in the living room along with sofa was a convinient place to sleep and spend time too. The kitchen was kind of small, just enough for 2 persons. But it had everything.
Best part of our stay was the staff. Monty (manager) provided us everything that we needed. Offered the conference room for few hours for our work even after we checked out.
Best value for money in Monterey for a family stay.

This hotel has plenty of good reviews but if you are a family, then my review may help you. We were on a road trip, with 2 adults and 3 children aged 19, 16, and 8. I booked the Lone Oak Lodge family room as it was one of the only hotels I could find online that accommodated 5 people. When we opened the front door of room 34 we were greeted by a massive stain in the carpet, then looked at the worn furniture, and I said to myself "if that is how they present the room, then I'd hate to think what is crawling in the beds", so I went back to the Manager to explain this was not good enough, and he just fobbed me off. So I let the Lone Oak keep my money and I booked 2 adjoining rooms at the Hyatt Regency Monterey for about the same money; which is what I should have done in the first place according to my wife and children.
If you are a family that usually books two adjoining rooms in chain hotels like Hyatt, Hilton, Raddisson, etc, then the lesson I learned is that when you try and book 2 adjoining rooms online it will often return a message saying "No Availability", but, if you ring them directly I found they will find you 2 adjoining rooms. So in hindsight, the Lone Oak was never the right the hotel for our family and I should have phoned the chain hotels to double check availability. The only upside to our experience is that my family took great joy in bagging the heck out of me for my poor research.

I booked 5 nights here based on the positive reviews, but was rather disappointed. I understand that the Covid pandemic has been tough on everyone, but I felt like this motel still could have been managed better under the circumstances:
* The heater was so loud on the first night that it kept me awake even when I wore earplugs. It was fixed after I reported the problem, but how did it get to be that bad?
* There was no soap in the dispenser in the shower. When I asked about this, I was told something to the effect of “we couldn’t get our supply from China during Covid.” OK, but there is both a CVS and a Dollar Store literally across the street. Couldn’t you have at least gotten some cheap soap for the shower there instead of leaving your guest to be unpleasantly surprised?
* The hot tub/sauna room was listed as “out of order.” It turned out not to be broken as I assumed, but closed based on the County’s Covid tier which, at the time, disallowed indoor spas. The website said nothing about any of this, which was pretty frustrating because I had booked this motel in part because I wanted to use the hot tub after my days of hiking.
* The bed was creaky and the mattress was on the hard side. It was functional but could use updating.
I am being generous in giving 3 stars—my experience was more like 2-1/2. There were some positives: I liked being able to park right in front of my room (I had packed way too much stuff!) and I thought the housekeepers did a nice job. Plus, even though there is *some* noise, it is mostly from the very occasional flyover from the nearby airport or from another motel guest’s car or motorcycle starting. I was far back from the street (much appreciated) and didn’t hear people in the next room.

Julie: Thanks for taking the time to provide us with such detailed feedback. I am sorry to hear that several things during your stay did not meet your expectations. At Red Roof Inn Arcata, we work hard to deliver excellent service and attention to detail; however, we have clearly dropped the ball this time. Your feedback is valuable as we strive to improve our service after each stay. I ensure that all your critical comments will be shared with the related department, and strict actions will be taken to rectify the situation. We can’t change the past, but if you give us another chance, we will definitely make it up to you. Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience. Take care, and stay safe! The room was clean. That's about all I can say in the positive. Furniture in the room was worn and the vinyl was pealing. We paid the same price that we could have spent at a 3 star chain hotel (~$250 for a 2 double bed room). Based off of the reviews and the pictures we took a risk and are sorry we did. When we asked for a refund, we were told the room was non-refundable and "hey we have new floors." No offer to move to a better room or anything. Like I said, the room was clean though the bedding was dingy. the new floors were fine. The big issue here was the price. Had it been priced at like $150-175 it would have made sense. But when I can go a couple miles down the road and stay at a 3 star hotel for the same price, this just isn't a good deal.

Check-in with Monte was wonderful. He was very helpful in helping me to find a room with a bathtub rather than just a shower. Very warm welcome. The room was lovely and very quiet which I greatly appreciated. Sparkling clean all around, TV worked great, bathtub was a bit shallow and still welcome, very comfortable bed. Fridge, microwave, coffee setup. This is a great stay for the price with very friendly management

had a family of five traveling--reserved the big family room. it turned out great. lighting, beds, bathroom, everything was nicely thought out, appointed, and organized. even small things like the cabinet hinges (slow close), kitchen items to warm up food with, and placement of plugs was all great. much appreciated.
small notes: they have solar panels galore to help keep things green. appreciated. and the bed quality was SUPERB. i think they might have been high end foam mattresses. they did not have playpacks/cribs to borrow so we were able to bring our own. no pool either (we just went to the beach near the dennis the menace playground instead). the location is near seaside which has a ton of chains and great mexican restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores, and donut stores.

This is one of the old, single story motels that is being refreshed. Our room had been refreshed and we had a nice stay, possibly because the motel was only about 1/3rd full. We requested a room away from the street and we were given one about half way back, which was far enough so that road noise wasn't an issue, but we may have had the fan on all night, which drowns out most noise. The bed was comfortable and we were able to park right outside our room, which is always convenient.
They are currently working on refreshing all the rooms, so I suppose if you were there in the day time and near where the work is going on, it could be an issue, but otherwise you should be fine.
There is one thing unusual about this hotel that I didn't notice until I just looked at the bill for the room. The nightly rate showed up very low when looking at the hotel online ($77.25 during the week in Feb) but out bill then adds a daily $3. water charge and a $12.00 "service charge" and I"m not sure what those were for, especially since we did not have any kind of servicing done to our room during our 3 day stay. So just be aware of this when looking at their room rates. I never see that on other hotels and so it makes this hotel seem way less expensive than others, when it really isn't.
We would definetly stay here again and the same price point.
