Stayed for 2 nights on the way from Solvang to Calistoga. A nice inn, walking distance to shops, restaurants, Cannery Row, Fisherman’s Wharf and Aquarium. Excellent recommendation from Reception for restaurant for dinner - Sandbar Grill - so good we went there both nights. Nice, clean room, good bathroom. First in room coffee free, then $1 each thereafter. May bother some, but not us. Morning coffee in lobby anyway. Free, simple breakfast. Toast your own bread, waffles. Boiled eggs, cereal, yogurt, mini doughnuts. Would stay here again if in Monterey.

I stayed at the Colton for three nights, and it felt like home from the beginning. Staff are all friendly, welcoming and caring, and my room was immaculate and comfy. The Colton is no-frills and no glitz, but it is quiet and you have everything you need. They handle housekeeping quite sensibly: they will do your room if you ask, and replenish whatever supplies you need; otherwise, you're left alone. Downtown is an easy and pleasant ten-minute walk away, and there's even a Trader Joe's a couple of blocks away, behind the hotel. By Monterey standards, it's reasonably priced, and the included breakfast is a bonus. If I return to Monterey, I hope to stay at the Colton again.

The location was good and we experienced a different part of Monterey. There was a lot of history in the neighborhood to walk around and see. We could walk to the farmers market easily. The room was a nice size and you could have a fire if you paid $15 extra. The bed was fine. They have a small electric heater, which took a while to warm the room, but once it was heated it was fine. The faucets in sink both leaked. The shower water was warm, but not hot. The staff was friendly and helpful! We had a nice time there.

Small boutique hotel away from Cannery Row. The location is still walking distance to the downtown area and the transit center to access the trolley and bus service. The rooms are a bit older but still clean and do not have air conditioning. We managed to sleep relatively comfortably with open windows at night, but coming from Houston (where we set the AC at 69 when we sleep), it was an adjustment. The water from the bathroom sinks was cloudy so we elected to use bottled water to brush our teeth. Our room did not receive housekeeping, I assume because of Covid but this was not communicated at check in. They do have breakfast available with Eggo waffles, toast, muffins, yogurt and cereal. In all, this hotel is a good alternative if you don’t want to pay $500 plus parking and excessive fees for an oceanfront hotel.

I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and that it was a good value for you. Most hotels in this area do not have AC because our climate is a cool one. we hardly ever get over 75 degrees during the day and the nights are always cool/cold. The heater is being used most of the time through out the year. Our experience has been that most people do not want anybody coming in to their room during their stay so we want to respect that and discontinued momentarily but we will be bringing back some form of stay over service next year where guests can opt in for it during the booking process. We hope to see you again on your next trip to the Central Coast. Have a great day :)

My experience with staying two nights at the Colton Inn was totally positive. Upon arrival from the friendly greeting at the front desk, to a courteous departure. The room was quiet, although situated in downtown Monterey. Because of the ideal location, I was able to easily walk throughout the historic area to Fisherman's Wharf. Excellent restaurants are plentiful as well as shopping. The cleanliness of the room, the extremely comfortable bed, the glowing fireplace and view of the vegetation all added together making my visit to Monterey all the more memorable. I highly recommend Colton Inn.

The Colton Inn is a two-story hotel that looks more like a motel. The first impression of the rooms is OK. Clean, spacious. Desk, armchair with footrest. Reception friendly. There was even a candy box with little chocolate cakes. It's now so cold that you have to turn the heating on again. The only problem is that they don't have heating here, just wire heaters. There's also no air conditioning, just a ceiling fan. Breakfast in the hotel is very simple: toast, a couple of different croissants and bagels, jam, milk, cereal/porridge,... Breakfast was included in the price. The ingredients in the little jam packets are very cheap. Forget about preserved fruit - it's basically preserved fruit syrup. There is a toilet right next to the breakfast room, only closed off with a sliding door. It's clean, but who wants to sit right next to the breakfast table?

We had a double Queen room with a fireplace. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean, quiet and spacious. The simple continental breakfast was greatly appreciated as it was convenient to not have to leave the Inn to have breakfast, allowing us to go back to the room to wash up before heading out. It was walking distance to the main strip where the restaurants were. Overall a very comfortable stay, convenient to all the local attractions. There were ample parking.

We found the Colton Inn to be a very clean basic motel style hotel. Our family of husband, wife and young adult daughter arrived later in the afternoon after driving Big Sur and a lovely lady at the desk greeted us. Our room was basic but filled our needs for the night. There was a small ceiling fan that was already on at arrival and we opened the door for some fresh air. I don’t think there was an aircon. Coming from Australia I can’t compare if it is value for money for the area but while researching hotels in the area it was one of the cheaper options. It was close enough to the main area to walk into for a meal. The breakfast as others have commented is a basic continental style breakfast with a few pastries, cereal and yogurts. For us it was a bed for an overnight stay while traveling.

This hotel is all about the service. Their staff are amazingly helpful and friendly. Their breakfast was more than I expected and they have a more than adequate spread.
I had the twin family room with a fireplace. The room is a very good size. I did not use the fireplace as they had an electric heater and that was sufficient for me. The only issue with the room might be in the warmer months as they don't have air-conditioning and only have one ceiling fan. But given I was there in November , I was comfortable in the room. Although the hotel is a bit old, the room was well maintained and the bed was very comfortable.
The hotel is in a good location as its less than 10 mins walk to the downtown restaurants and shops. You pretty much can walk to most places from the hotel in about 15 mins or so.
I will come back when I am in Monterey again. At this price , they are a very food option and I am glad I chose to stay here.

This is a nice hotel in a central location, a decent breakfast is included. Like all California hotels it has recently raised its prices to extortionate levels. It's really unbelievable that for those prices the wifi doesn't work.

Am confident just adjoining rooms only. Rooms are very spacious as well as having a fridge in them. We stayed here in the summer and had no problems. Everything is close by and easily accessible. Although I felt it was expensive for what it is
Hi Dara,
The Butterfly Sanctuary is located in Pacific Grove between Lighthouse Ave and Short St. The Monarchs arrive towards the end of October and will leave around the middle of February. It's a lovely 10 minute drive from our hotel. We hope to see you during that time.
Hello and Thank you for your question. We indeed have taken care of these items. It was a one time thing, the chair was replaced almost a year ago and our walls and rooms have been painted anew.
