Nice hotel with good location. Close to Cannery row, fisherman’s wharf and other tourists sites. The hotel serves a good breakfast. The hotel has a very nice deck where you can eat your breakfast or sit and relax during the day. Very nice and helpful staff. The only downside is that parking is quite tight, especially when the hotel is full. I also wish there were air conditioner. The room got pretty warm even though there is a fan. Overall I was very happy with our stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice hotel in the Monterey/Carmel area.

Stayed in June 2022, as part of a family vacation from the UK. Having first stayed at the Colton Inn back in 2017, it was always my intention to return for a trip originally planned for 2020.... Ellen (General Manager) had been so helpful in continually rolling forward my booking over the last couple of years & it was great to finally return for a couple of nights in June 2022. I received a warm welcome from the check-in clerk, & it was especially nice to meet & chat with Ellen after all our emails! We again stayed in the family room which has 3 queen size beds, which was perfect for our group of 5. The room was very clean, comfortable, & even with 5 of us, there was plenty of room. It's also very quiet so we all got a great night's sleep. If needed, the room also had a fridge, microwave, & coffee machine, & I enjoyed the complementary breakfast provided, taken in a new (since my last visit) breakfast area. The Colton Inn is only a short walk away from Fisherman's Wharf, with plenty of parking spaces. I'd certainly stay here again if I'm lucky enough to return to Monterey, & can fully recommend staying here as a great value, comfortable, & welcoming motel.

The hotel is within a few minutes walking distance to the center of Monterey shops and restaurants, as well as renowned Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (known as Monterey Institute of International Studies before it merged with the Middlebury College). Room is well appointed with fridge, microwave and coffee machine in the room. It offers free breakfast. It has ample parking space. Shuttle bus to and from San Francisco and San Jose international airports drops you off and pick you up at the hotel if requested in advance. Recommended if you visit Monterey and need value for money place to stay.

For the price paid I would have expected quality. When a motel charges high and then provides poor bedding that is not good. Pillows were cheap, hard and lumpy so sleep was not good. This was a real shame as it ruined the stay. Wouldn’t stay again or would bring my own pillows.

I stayed at Colton inn for 2 nights and found it very pleasant. Parking was easy the reception staff were approachable and friendly. Decent coffee in the room which was great. Breakfast wasn’t the best as not many choices but that didn’t bother me too much. The location was good and I found it quiet enough both nights to get a great night sleep. I would definitely stay here again

1. They definitely prefer you book through their website. It’s 10% cheaper and you get a preferred room. There were a couple people at the desk who were complaining about their room when we checked in. Our room was two queens, a fireplace and it was great. 2. The room was clean, but cold. Spacious and had a fireplace which was nice because it was a chilly night. Our sliding door went out to a patio. The creek everyone is talking about is nothing to write home about. Garbage in it and barely water. 3. Breakfast was okay. No complaints. We would stay here again. 4. We got there at 2pm and they would not let us check in. Had to come back. But she was nice about it.

We have stayed at the Colton Inn a number of times. Although, not for a couple years. When we decided to come to Monterey for our anniversary, my wife suggested we stay at the Colton Inn because we enjoy the warm hospitality, the views of the creek, the proximity, to the dining and drinks on Alvarado Street, and coming back to a fire at the end of the evening. I had decided to look at other more upscale hotels as this was a special occasion. I was ready to spend two or three times what the Colton was charging. But my wife reminded me of our great experiences at the Colton Inn. So, I booked two nights. The reception was not warm or friendly. When I got to our room with a balcony the room was so small it was hard to walk in the door with a bag and the furniture so tightly packed it was hard to get to the balcony. But I shouldn’t have bothered. The balcony didn’t overlook the creek. It overlooked a parking lot. I went back to the front desk to request a different room. I was told that they didn’t have any other rooms for me. I asked if all the rooms were booked. I was told because I had booked with hotels.com they didn’t have any other rooms for me, but that there were other rooms. I said I would be willing to pay for another room. I was told the only other rooms available would not have a balcony. Then I was chastised for not booking directly with the property. And I was told that things might’ve gone differently had I done so.

Response from Ellen Reinerink, General Manager at Colton Inn

Hello Mr P, We are known for our great costumer service and I'm sorry that you felt shortened. We always try to accommodate everybody's requests. There was no request on your reservation and the room you stayed in 4 years ago was already occupied. I tried to relay to you that making a reservation directly though the hotel is the best way to go as we have more rooms/room types but I understand that wasn't helping the situation at that time. I offered another room at a different location but without balcony and you declined that offer. I had nothing else in my room selection as it was a busy weekend so it wasn't a situation of not wanting to accommodate but not being able to. So I hope you will find your way to us again sometime in the future. Have a great day :)

Start with the negative- the fire/police stations are about 100 yards away. Never heard a 2AM siren during my three-night stay. Everything else is a plus. Absolutely great location for the things to do in Monterey proper. Downtown, historic sites, Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey Bay Park, Cannery Row- all within walking distance. The Aquarium is the farthest away at just under 2 miles along the waterfront trail, about a 40-minute walk. The staff was very helpful and through, the room was very clean and good sized. And very comfortable! Everything (except the toilet seat) worked flawlessly. It's not on "motel row", so the traffic was more local than tourist. Never had a chance to try the breakfast or sauna, but given everything else, I had no doubt they are also excellent. Very reasonably priced for the area. I have a June '22 event to attend downtown, looking forward to staying here then!

How great that you found your hidden gem for when you stay in Monterey. We are that gem for a lot of returning guests and it's been so great over the years to welcome so many people back on their annual vacation trips, conference visit or road trips. It's the great guests like yourself that make our job joyful. The fire department is actually really considerate. They will go out with lights only and then after the next block they will turn the siren on when needed so they are good neighbors to have. We are looking forward to see you again next year. Please make sure you make your reservation directly with the hotel by calling or use the $10 off per night by booking through our website. Have a great day :)

I stayed at the Colton Inn in early October 2021 for three nights. I am happy to report there were no problems. The staff was friendly and quite competent. They were able to help me walk to many nearby location such as the historic Friendly Plaza and the nearby Museum of Abstract Art. The manager was just a gem! She is organized and is able to help with directions to a destination or suggestions of lesser-known experiences. The hotel does a thorough job making sure the rooms are clean to protect from Covid-19. The rooms were stylish and include a small refrigerator and microwave. My room faced the street, but there was not much traffic noise and I sleep soundly anyway! The windows actually opened as I like to sleep in a cool room. Breakfast is included and is ready at 7 am sharp! This allowed me to get going on my day very early. TV is provided, though I did not watch much as I was not in the room during the day. I would be pleased to stay here again when I return to the area.
