This is a much older property which is very well maintained for its age. Just passing through Merced and wanting something cheap, I picked the San Joaquin.

Most of the cut rate motels in Merced are in sketchier parts of town. The railroad tracks parallel 16th where this one is found. I was only awakened once during the night by a passing train, most go through during the day.

The manager (owner) did all he could to accommodate my requests. Though the bed was very firm and I thought it would be a problem, it was not. I slept fine. The rooms are small. It does seem that there are some who live in a few of the rooms. The parking lot is very tight, impossible to turn around if full.

First, about the trip: This was a Yosemite trip. But I found out one critical thing -- that driving back and forth from merced took like 4-5 hours of our supposed Yosemite vacation. Next time, I'd rather spend a bit more on hotels closer to yosemite than waste time, gas and energy on a far away motel. ----------- Just a friendly advice.

Now, about the hotel.

Came here for the price. Expected it to be a piece of dump, but the outside was actually nicer than the other motels we've passed by. Fresher paint.

Then we entered our room. As expected, the carpet was dirty, the sheets had some stains -- but the bathroom was actually clean -- surprise.

The room was old, but the bathroom was maybe a bit newer renovated. I gave it 3 stars because of the bathroom and the clean outdoors.

Would I sleep here again?

If I have business here in merced, then yes. Otherwise, I would just get a closer hotel to yosemite. The gas and energy you waste driving from merced would make the more expensive hotel near yosemite cheaper.

Asked for wake up call but never recieved one, maybe they don't have that technology. Stayed at another motel and they too had no wake up call. Could be a new trend.
Plastic wrap still on mattres. That was a noisey night with the movement with the plastic. A/C works but heater does not prepare to freeze. It's winter and it's cold.

A good experience - pleasant, friendly service; we didn't reserve online, so we got quoted $50 for a room, compared to over $60 online. Clean rooms (we rented two single rooms, both without problems).

Looking to get away for a few days my boyfriend and I decided to stay at the San Joaquin inn merced.we chose this hotel because it looked clean and quaint .. Rooms very affordable.. So we get checked in .. Once we got in the room we were appalled it was filthy dirty no dirty linens dirty towels mold growing inside the refrigerator awful smell lingered about the room the sheets on the bed had been slept in already from previous guest leaving behind hair on pillows .. Used soap and shampoo was left inside the shower with a green liquid on the floor of shower . towels had blood on them very stained .. No carrence for the guests at all .. Housekeeper very rude and invasive for she beats on the door 2 hours before checkout demanding the key and sheets .. No professionalism what so ever at this establishment

It rained while I was there. Couldn't seem to get the room to warm up. I guess the heater doesn't go up a whole lot. I think they wash their own towels rather having a professional laundry business do it for them because their towels were heavily stained. Food from the previous visitors left food in the microwave and crumbs were on the table AND inside the drawers. Found a bottle cap with my foot. Woke up in the morning still raining and I suspect there is a leak in the ceiling or wall because the closet was heavily soaked with water.
