We have stayed at the Cypress Tree Motel on several trips. We used to stay in Pismo, but have found that over the years, Pismo has become too commercial and too "hip" for its own good. We also stayed once in Morro Bay, but there wasn't too much to do, and the ambiance didn't suit our style.

First of all, the Cypress Tree Motel will not be to everyone's liking.... It is, by its name, a "motel"... not a hotel.

Let me preface my review that we needed to find a place which accepted pets.... The Cypress Tree readily does this with open arms, as long as the animals are friendly, well-behaved, and basically don't cause a problem....kind of like the humans they would want in their establishment... hey>????!!!

For each of our trips (we have stayed there five times), we had two dogs (one smaller beagle mix, and a Rottweiler). We first stayed at the motel in a small, corner room, near the laundry, which proved adequate. The room was nicely kept, and the nice touch with fresh flowers was very appreciated. We had been told there would be a refrigerator in the room when we arrived, but it was not. By that evening, there was a brand new mini fridge in the room --- something which the owners really didn't need to do, but, as we have come to find out over the years, they do for great customer service.

The only thing we had problems with in this room was the bathroom. Obviously, this is a converted motel, so putting bathroom and showers into each unit is a stretch, it has been done, but lighting and convenience were not always considered.

The second time we stayed at the Cypress Tree, we took the upstairs apartment with ocean view. This unit has a full kitchen, a full bedroom, a living room (also a bedroom) and full bath. It has a view of the water from the bedroom (and partially from the living room), which is great during the winter months with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, for watching the sunset.

We loved this unit, but had problems with the Rottweiler getting up the stairs for those days..... We even had to carry her 110 lbs up the staircase after a lengthy walk on the beach. I would highly recommend this unit for anyone wishing to see the ocean, wanting a full kitchen, and a separate bedroom..... Actually a great bargain for the price, the location and the view.

We have also stayed in the downstairs kitchen unit (again with the dogs --- and they both loved it ---- no stairs!!!!!). This unit is not as large as the upstairs, ocean-view unit, but it is very well laid out and nicely equipped. The only problem with this unit is that it is not at the end of the building (it's sandwiched between two rooms near the end of the building), and one hears all the goings on in the parking lot and on the communal lawn. With that said, it was the best for us because of the dogs' needs.

We have stayed at the Cypress Tree Motel on two other occassions, in different rooms, and have always found the rooms to be clean, comfortable, and well-provisioned.

The owners are a husband-wife team who are constantly busy with the day-to-day activities of running such an endeavor. They are hard-working, but also very accommodating to guests, to make sure that your stay in Cayucos is pleasant and rewarding.

The motel is not right on the beach, and the pricing reflects this. But beach access is only one short block away, past lovely houses, and makes for a nice stroll in the morning, afternoon or evening.

There is no restaurant on premise, but there is a restaurant one block way, as well as a sundries store, a video rental store, a real estate office, and a grocery market.

We highly recommend the Cypress Tree Motel for its charm of yesteryear, its location, the pricing, and the comfortable, laid-back rooms.

I chose this hotel as I was seeking a few days of relaxation, and I found it!
I especially liked the nice large patch of green grass they had, which was
equipped with lots of lawn furniture and a bbq. I spent the first night sitting
out there and totally enjoying it. The rooms all have a different theme and
are absoutely adorable - many hand made wall hangings and painted plaques
in the rooms. They also have hand made wooden signs all over the property
and on the fence - signs like route 66 etc, it was fun to look at them. The
rooms are smaller, but not bad at all - I felt there was enough room for us
without feeling cramped. The bathrooms have been updated, new tile in the
shower, new lighting and a beviled mirror medicine chest so you could put
toiletries away. If you sat out by the green grass you do have a partial
ocean view. The owners are very friendly and want to make your stay
enjoyable. There were fresh flowers in the room as well. Its a short walk
to the ocean and a nice restaurant right across the street and down 2
bldgs. I visited there with my husband and my mom who is 89 and she
just loved it as well and felt very at home. Ive been looking for a new place
to stay, I just loved the town, and plan to come here every other month!

Room was clean, service is great, prices are reasonable, nearby pier and restaurants.

The room was too small in my humble opinion but considering the rates it is understandable.

I just was there enough time to see 2 rooms at top of stairs, with a kitchen. I planned a mini vacation with my 3 kids. I had stayed there before like 10 years ago and the place was nice. As of yesterday i had never seen something so run down in a long time. The carpets in the "sunflower room" was horrible and there was as area rug on top. Very outdated . The only working stove that was available was so filthy it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 10 years, there was melted cheese hanging of the oven rack. We then decided to check out the Lighthouse room. A little cleaner, but water was left in the coffee pot and stove didn't work. Very disappointed. I called the week before to get a room, was told full to call back i tried 2 times and left a message no return, called another time a child answered and said they were booked. Called a couple days before and got a room to encounter this disaster! Had to go find another room with no vacancy available, found one farther away than I liked. Drove by there on my way home and the same car that was parked there was still there in the same spot. Very surprised they are still in business!

Called to reserve room was told to call back in 20 minutes. Called back a young girl answered she mumbled something & hung up on me. I've called several times only to get recording. Left message & have yet to get a return call. This place obviously doesn't deserve anyone's business. Do them a favor and stay at another hotel.

I wanted to like this place, but it was just dirty. The carpet needs to be changed and there is dust everywhere. Our family are all in the hospitality industry and this place was just embarrassing. It just didn't feel clean. I am not trying to be mean, but I think the owner may have lost their way, time for an upgrade.

For a $155.42 I expect a LOT more. I wanted to leave right when we checked in, but everywhere else was booked.

We have stayed here before and while it's not luxurious it was cute. It is right on the main street on Cayucos and very convenient to the restaurants and festival we were going to attend. This time however was very different. The carpet was filthy (not just dirty) and there were large stains all over. There was dog poop all over the walk to our room and on our doormat which we had to scrape off, the paint was peeling off in the shower, the room smelled of old cigarettes and there wasn't any kleenex or enough soap. We were asked not to request room service which we usually don't anyway but were a little taken aback at the comment. Also had very noisy swearing neighbors until very late. They were playing the guitar and swearing loudly. It was hot so we had the windows open and had to close them but could still hear the noise. There was a fan in the room but it was noisy so we had to sleep with that on. Since there was no phone in the room we couldn't call to complain.

Response from emmylou5, Owner at Cypress Tree Motel

I've owned the Cypress Tree for almost 15 years and have resisted responding to a review until now. I would invite anyone reading this person's review to click our "By the Garden" room page and look at the farm gate with flowers decoration over the bed. I have received hundreds of compliments on it over the years, and none of them contained the phrase "dead flowers". The second "dead flower" reference was for the the red, white, and blue boquets we attach to all our room doors as part of our elaborate 4th of July decorations. As for the cleanliness issues, I suggest anyone to read all 31 reviews currently on TripAdvisor and note "clean" or "cleanliness" is mentioned in the vast majority of them. I quess none of the rest of us can be as perfect as the writer of this review.

We like Cayucos and decided to spend a night there instead of staying in Morro Bay as we have in the past on our coastal roadtrips. It is just a small coastal town with a great stretch of beach and lots of good antique shopping in the area.

We drove by the Cypress Tree Motel a few times and then decided to check it out as it looked very interesting and a little different. It's rating on Tripadvisor was ok but not the best. We were looking for a place that was clean and not pricey as we were just going to be there to sleep. They had availability and let me look at two different rooms to see which one we might like and I wanted to make sure they were nice and clean. All of the rooms have some sort of theme. I checked out the Garden Room and the Route 66 Room. We decided on the Route 66 Room as it was so different, really cute. It was off-season and they gave us a great rate and a discount on top of that.

This place is just so different, kind of like you are going back in time. The owners bought this place before it was going to be torn down and have been working on it for about 12 years if I remember right. The whole property and the rooms have such detail and shows the time spent and the thought that has gone into everything. There are pictures, sayings and signs everywhere! As said, each room has a different theme and is decorated in that manner and just takes you back in time. You have everything you need in your room too such as a small frig./freezer which they put two small bottles of water, microwave, coffee/tea, TV with plenty of channels, hair dryer and needed toiletries. The bath towels were of good quality, nice and thick which surprised me for a smaller motel. They even put out little chocolates for you each day. They really pay attention to the small little details. The outside lawn area is really cute. The fence that borders the property has old signs everywhere, there is a big cypress tree that is all lit up at night with all these different type lights on it, a few lawn chairs, BBQ for which they will provide the charcoal, table and chairs and lawn ornaments and decorations throughout. They have put so much time and thought into every little area of this place. The owner told me that he has wanted to do this since he was 19 years old and it is a work in progress.

You are not on the beach and blocks from it but you can see a very small part of the ocean and at night when quiet you can hear the waves.

I could go on about this place and I am sure I have forgotten a few things but I can tell you it was a great find for us. The Cypress Tree Motel is just a fun and happy place. It is very different than your average chain motel and quirky in a good way. We were just planning on staying one night and ended up staying two here, on our week roadtrip. This is not a 5*, not even close but for us it was great. I rated it a 5 as it is a great value, although not on the beach the location is very good and within walking distance to shopping and restaurants. We were just looking for a nice clean room with a comfortable bed and a good deal. We got that and a little more at the Cypress Tree Motel.

I have stayed at the Cypress Tree Motel several times over the last several years and have had good experiences each and every time. The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean and each is decorated in a theme. The bed and pillows are extremely comfortable. Some of the rooms are not very large so if that is a concern be sure to ask when you make your reservation. To me the charm of the rooms make up for the size! Cayucos is a small beach town so shops and restaurants and the beach are all within walking distance. This is my hotel of choice when I am in the area!
