In an area not know for great accommodations and food, Avicar stands out. We stayed there for three days on a birding expedition. Unprepossessing from the road, the rooms sit on a shady hillside with a nice swimming pool. Rooms are basic but well-cared for and clean. And the food is worth a special trip. For breakfast, the best fried bread we had anywhere in Panama. For lunch and dinner, all the dishes are nicely cooked, with a variety of different sauces. The local shrimp are particularly good, and the patacones crisp without being either overly oily or starchy. Owner Andres is friendly and engaging, and clearly a source of great hospitality to the local community as well as travelers.

A great experience and lovely hotel. I have visited this hotel multiple times and stayed in several different rooms. The rooms are clean and well cared for and the owner is great to talk to. I have felt safe and secure in the rooms and have enjoyed many evenings sitting on the wrap around porch overlooking a lovely tropical garden. I have also enjoyed eating at the attached restaurant. This hotel in Torti is a hidden gem.

Again, amazed with their service. They helped me organice a nice anniversary dinner for my wife. She loved it. The food really good, candles and all the details. The best place in Torti, either for a stay on your way or if you are new in this charming little town.

Excellent place to stay, nice clean rooms and clean linen. Clean bathroom. Neat restaurant. Excellent host - manager, restaurant staff, everyone!
also, next door to a local general store for any needed groceries.
Will happily stay here again.
Surrounding area - decent bird watching.

We were pleasantly surprised at this hotel. The rooms are basic but very clean and comfortable with good ensuite. The gardens are lovely and the swimming pool a nice surprise in this remote area. The open air restaurant overlooks the gardens and humming bird feeders and the food was very good. Altogether a comfortable place to say en route to the Darien.

This new hotel and restaurant is your only comfortable choice in this rural region of Eastern Panama. Andreas and his wife speak English quite well and are eager to make your stay comfortable. The restaurant offers typical Panamanian food which is very tasty and reasonably priced. We shared a grilled Corvina which had been swimming that morning and it was Excellent.
The rooms are clean, the rustic furniture locally crafted and comfortable. The pool looks inviting but was closed for maintenance while we were there. The area is rural so the roosters will remind you that morning is approaching. The roads are excellent except of a stretch being rebuilt. A great stopover on you way to or from the Darien. Our purpose for visiting was a birding trip with the Panama Audubon Society, we were not disappointed. The town offers 2 mini supermarkets for any supplies, snacks or beverages.

I went on a mission trip to Guacuco, Panama and we stayed here for a whole week. We have stayed at other places in the area in the last few years and NONE hold a candle to this place. The most important thing is I felt safe here! There was no worrying at all. The pool was amazing, the breakfast was awesome, the location is great (just down the road from the market and gas station), the rooms had a few insects but that is nothing compared to hearing rats crawling around the floors of some other hotels we have stayed! The showers were hot and they provided jugs of water for us to drink. It was awesome. The people were SO SUPER nice and friendly! We loved them dearly and will most definitely be staying here again next year! Definitely recommend this hotel with 5 stars!

The Portal Avicar is surprisingly pleasant for a place so far off the beaten track. Well, it's on the Inter American highway but on the way to the most remote parts of Panama. Rooms were sparsely furnished but air conditioned and bug-free. Everything worked. The indoor/outdoor restaurant was fine - good local food and cold beer. The only sad let-down was the pool that was empty - perhaps because of water shortages in a very dry season? Cooling off in a pool would have been wonderful after a hot day's birding. Given the sparse options available, this place shouold get more business from travelers not going all the way to the end of the Inter American at Darien.

Room Tip: All rooms are behind the restaurant and well back from the road, so all are fairly quiet.

Our birding tour group stopped here twice for lunch and restrooms. The food was excellent, with a very good variety available. We ate outside so we could watch the action at the hummingbird feeders. The restrooms were clean.
We also walked along the nearby river and the bridge for good birding.
This should be a planned stop for anyone heading to/from the Darien.

This hotel is an absolute gem. I stayed here while volunteering with Global Brigades and the owner, Andres, always made an effort to remember our names and greet us when he saw us. There were never any bugs in our rooms and the shower had hot water with good strong pressure. My stay here was wonderful, I would recommend this hotel to all - families, solo travelers, couples, and business travelers.
