We called ahead and weretold a CABIN rented Mon. To Thur. P800.00 plus P200 per extra persons. When we arrived the dek charged me P1200. for 2 persons plus the P200 per extra person. Total P1800, Ok then it was another P250 for a bare mattress to put on ther floor for the 5th person....We requested 3 more towles and were told they only llow 2 towles per room no matter the persons in the room...... NEEDLES TO SAY ONE NIGHT THERE WAS ENOUGH !!!!!
The SO CALLEDESTURANT is way over priced and portions smaller then I feed my 4 year old....
I read reviews about the other places to stay in CDO and was far from impressed. My fiancee who lives nearby recommended Cocobay since it was close so I figured I would try it (I liked it enough to come back again obviously). This time around, the "ambassador" rooms - the concrete ones - were finished. If you want close to western standards as possible, forgo the wooden huts with logs (and cracks between) and go for the concrete rooms. The price is not that bad - think I paid a few hundred dollars (Cdn) for the week.
What I liked: No bugs in the room, everything was sealed pretty well. Clean interior, tv was a bit on the small side however easily watchable and well, who goes this far to stay inside to watch tv all the time? Was good enough, put it that way. Flat screen attached to wall. Fridge was fine, bathroom was fine, shower was unusual until I figured out you had to turn this hot water conversion box thing on, and once it was on it had some pretty warm water coming out. Last time, in the huts, the water was all cold. This was a welcome bonus for me, hot water apparently goes far when away from home.
I did find the helper/staff quite nice, friendly and courteous. No complaints, they would bring the food I ordered relatively quickly, and responded within a fast enough time to any requests I made.
Pool was good, nothing out of the ordinary there. Clean enough for swimming and I didn't notice anything strange about it.
Didn't worry about safety really, door locked fine, windows were locked, and the Cocobay resort is behind closed walls. The area down the road a bit from Cocobay (Cugman) is not the best area to wander about after 10pm (too many people drinking and around that time those with less than good intent start coming out) however provided you are in Cocobay you're fine. If you go to Cugman at night by yourself, just keep a heightened situational awareness of things/people around you and be wary of those that approach you on motorcycle/scooter (robbers frequent this mode of transport).
Food was good, and the menu was varied. See below for my thoughts on the restaurant:
Okay, now on to my complaints. They are not many however if the owner truly wants to beat out the competition than he should pay attention here. The biggest complaint is the "no outside food/drink rule". Come now, really. Western hotels realized long ago that this does not work. People were breaking this rule every chance they got, myself included. Why? Here's a good reason: a can of san miguel beer at the restaurant cost 40 peso. A can of san miguel beer at the grocery store in gaisano mall cost 21. See the difference now?
Basically, it is far more cost effective to pay for the taxi to the grocery store, load up for a week, and then come back and smuggle it in. Now, I know they make a lot of money in the restaurant side of things and God knows I love their buttered chicken and adobo, but the prices have just turned away all of the customers. Even the local ones were doing the same thing - hell all of us were.
Owner; if you want us to use your restaurant, do two things: 1- Allow outside food and drink and 2- Lower the restaurant prices! Believe me, I would have much rathered to order and get everything from there instead of riding down the death trap that is the driving experience in the Philippines and getting groceries to take in. However with all the money saved, I and others were still willing to do it. If you allow outside food and drink and then adjust prices to be *competitive* you can still make a profit. In fact, you will probably make more of a profit because people will use the restaurant more! Banning outside goods and jacking the prices on the inside does-not-work and was done away with ages ago by modern hotel chains.
Also, bigger proportions wouldn't hurt.. I ordered the "american breakfast" and I got enough rice sure, but the sausages were a bit small and the bacon was .... virtually non-existent. I don't think it would feed a cat to be honest. All three were less than one size of average bacon over here. For the price, at least don't skimp out on the food!
The second thing that irked me was room service. It was great - but you had to call for it and request exactly what you need. Again, if the owner wants to get as close to possible as western standards - and given the amount of western tourists this would be a very good idea - then he should hire/employ a very trustworthy maid/cleaning service to change the sheets, take out trash, etc etc every morning for the rooms. Hell, at least for the ambassador rooms at least. Again, trust is a big issue at any hotel so there would have to accountability but having a room service that operates daily would have made a huge difference for comfort and quality.
These were the two things that got to me, however everything else was great. Definitely no freaking rats in my room as other reviewers in other hotels mentioned. And again, the staff at front desk and in general were very nice and friendly.
This is the place to stay in CDO, I'm telling you. Just make sure you get the ambassador/concrete rooms as it does make a big difference and comes closer to matching the standards we are used to in the west.
I do recommend this place. It's a nice escape from the insane hustle/bustle/noise that CDO is known for and from what I have personally observed probably the best bet for hotel comfort in this city and you just can't go wrong with the price, you really can't.
