Detailed Reviews
We had a few nights at this camp-site, one night either side of our night in the okavango delta.
I really liked this spot, the grounds were nice and the bar wss great with the best outdoor area. Not to mention the frozen daiquiris on a warm afternoon 😉
The amenities were quite good and we also had some washing done too, which was handy.
I'd definitely recommend a stay here!

Far enough outside Maun and off the road for peace and quiet, staying here proved to be a relaxing and rewarding experience. I opted not to fly into the Okavanga Park nor camp on the delta fringe since March is not the best game-viewing season, but took the mokoro (canoe) day-trip offered by Delta Rain which is the safari arm of the campsite. This was excellent, with my own private driver and poler and a tasty homebaked food basket with drinks. I met the owner-managers Suzie and Matt. They were most hospitable and helpful and any reports less than glowing about what they have created here are unfounded. The campsite itself is well laid out with private and groups set apart from each other and away from the bar which was quiet in any case. The cook makes the the best bread ever and her meals are tasty with even hand-made lasagna. "Wow" to that! Suzie saw to it that I had the requested variety of fresh fruit and the best natural yogurt I have tasted.
There are basic non-ensuited huts and simple comfortable chalets with outside hot showers overhung by trees, which I really liked. My chalet looked into the bush and from my bed, I could see all kinds of small animals and birds. My three days here were among the most peaceful and refreshing of my trip in Africa. The property is fenced and patrolled by several gaurds who work around the clock, so there is no concern for security.
A walk around the property is enough for morning and evening exercise, a time when you can see larger animals. A lovely surprise was that the fencelines lead down to the river which is nothing less than what can be seen in the Delta - marshes, water lillies, birds, frogs and small islands. The bush is full of wild flowers. There is a private crocodile farm and apparently a few runaways which management says makes walking too close to the riverbank risky.
People not opting to do anything can sit beside the two pools which are large enough to enjoy a dip in the heat of the day. One is new and near the new open air deck bar and restaurant. The only comment is that there could be a little more shade around the pool deck chairs and some ferns or palms to surround the pools.
If you don't have a car, there is usually someone from the property going into Maun for shopping to give you a lift so you are not trapped here. Maun has everything.

I stayed here for one night as part of a Nomad trip. The chalet has all the basics with an outdoor bathroom.
There was plenty of hot water so showering was pleasant despite the cold African morning temperature.
Sitatunga has a nice bar and an open fire where you can enjoy your drink under the starry sky. As our Nomad chef prepared all our meals I can say nothing about the food.
Tip: bring flip flops and wear them when you shower.

Sitatunga campsite is well located close to Maun, but in a quiet area away from the town. You can upgrade for P40 per person per night to get a private ablutions block with a covered area, which was very handy in the rainy season! The staff are super helpful and friendly and helped us organise activities in the Delta. The bar has a good vibe and the food in the restaurant was a nice change from camping cooking, with lots of veggie options. It's about 3 hours drive to Moremi Park gate, but doable for a day trip if you are early risers. The only slight downside was the Mozzies were rampant - you definitely didn't want to stay in the bathroom too long!

Sitatunga is a great option for camping in Maun. A truly exceptional Restuarant to treat yourself as well as inviting pool, well-maintained garden, surrounds and camp sites. Hot water. Tom, the manager, is particularly friendly and helpful. Pay them a visit, or even just go for a tasty meal.

We spend 5 nights at Sitatunga. Beautiful campsite. Very friendly people. Loved chatting to Tom the camp manager. His people skills are on par with a camp manager at a 5 star lodge. Will definitely camp at Sitatunga again.

We upgraded to a cabin and i went to have a shower (I was alone as my friend was in the pool). I turned the hot lever tap on and then went to turn the cold lever tap on and my hand clamped around the lever as electricity soared up my arm. After a few seconds and starting to panic i dropped to my knees and my body weight was enough to pull my hand off and i banged my head on the concrete floor. I was shaking like a leaf. There is a South African couple managing the place and the woman tried to pass it off as static electricity (which it definitely wasn't!). The man detected that an electrical current was running through the pipes.
We got moved to a different cabin and a couple hours later when paying for everything I asked about just getting that night's upgrade fee (we were on an overland trip with OnTheGo) waived and the manager refused saying i should be grateful that he even moved us to a different cabin, that the waiver form we signed that our tour leader insisted upon (which we thought was just for an excursion) meant that the campsite wasn't liable for any failures (so i can get killed because of their equipment/accomodation). Not even as a gesture of goodwill would he waive the upgrade fee. It was cheap but a matter of principal. The other members of my group who stood with me were appalled at my treatment. Then a very intimidating big man came up to us and ordered us out of the cabin (I won't repeat the exact words he used). So we had to move our stuff for a 2nd time and put up a tent in the dark. I was left shaken by their attitude.
It was frightening because the campsite is in the middle of nowhere. it wasn't like we had a choice to leave and go somewhere else. We were trapped there at their mercy. Our OnTheGo tour leader wasn't much help - I think because he was worried about rocking the boat and getting fired from his job.
Campsite itself was nice but if anything goes wrong they turn on you and become completely different people.

Where to start?
1) We were told that there has been no wifi since a fire a few months ago. I found wifi in the office. When the owner saw me using my iPad he turned off the wifi for everyone until we left. Talk about spiting one's nose.
2) One of our group members had booked a horse trip, her first ever. That afternoon there was a thunderstorm followed by a sandstorm. Understandably, she did not want her first time on a horse to be in a mix of sand and rain. The owner told her that the animals would still be out and active-- I suppose he's never seen animals, as they tend not to like sandstorms-- and that she was not entitled to any rebate. Wow.
3) Due to said thunderstorm, there was no backup power and no AC in our unit. So, we asked to change to a much cheaper unit that didn't have AC or a private shower. The owner told me, "I can't promise that the power will come on. So, you can move to another room or stay where you are. But you have to choose now. And if the power doesn't come on then I won't give you a refund. You have to choose now. I don't care what you do." I would have left the camp, but we were with a group.
4) The mosquito "nets" were full of holes and I woke up bitten all over.
The manager didn't want to give a refund to one of group until he saw that she was an attractive woman. Really.
The pool was green. And that was before the termites came.
I could go on, but I've wasted enough of my time on this place. Avoid and perhaps the owner will get the message that there are other swaths of dirt around Maun and that customer service still counts.

Sitatunga is not safe. Our luggage was stolen. We spent one night at Sitatunga and then we flew to the Okavanga Delta for two days. Our tour company, Nomad, instructed us to leave almost all our goods in the lockers in their truck at the Sitatunga/ Delta Rains camp, even though our luggage would have been under the weight limit for the plane. The Nomad guide assured us that our luggage would be safe. The truck was broken into on the second night. Window was smashed, locks broken and luggage stolen. This was not noticed until the Nomad guides returned to truck the next morning. Turns out thieves stole the goods, took them to an unoccupied hut on Sitatunga property and divided goods in great detail, because the rejects (ragged clothing, medicines, toiletries) were separated and put into one bag which was left near the fence. Nomad refused to wait for the police fingerprinters, instead had everyone using the lockers and when the police tried to fingerprint at the station the expert said the prints had been obscured.
Both our Nomad guide and our Nomad driver said it had to have been an inside job and this seems logical since the truck made a good target and anyone on the Sitatunga grounds would have seen the lockers with locks on them as Nomad staff left the truck open during the day. Nomad staff were assigned a cabin nowhere near the truck even though there were empty cabins close by. Nomad claimed they relied on Sitatunga’s 24 hour security. It is very hard to understand how 24 hour security could miss hearing the breaking of a truck window and not see the broken glass during their patrols.
We were very surprised to later read on Trip Advisor that a truck had been robbed earlier and also goods stolen from tents. It took over 2 months to even obtain a copy of the police report from Sitatunga (although Nomad had told our agent that we had been given a copy of the police report and then had told us our agent had been given a copy of the police report, neither of which were true).
The Okavanga delta is great, but stay somewhere safer.

Response from Gerald S, General Manager at Sitatunga Campsite Maun
Responded Sep 2, 2016
Hello. it is agreed that the goods were stolen on the property of Sitatunga. However it was not an inside job. We did extensive investigations with the Police and CID (Central Intelligence Dept) and came to the conclusion that it was not an employee. I would also like to make it clear that the truck was left unattended by tour operator on both occasions. Although we have a "Disclaimer of Liabillity" sign at the entrance and a waiver form that you signed we did everything possible from our side to get the police report for Insurance purposes. We however do our best with what we have and try not make Sitatunga look like a prison camp. We are as frustrated as anyone about this and hope that this never happens again. Gerald

Cape Town Central, South Africa57 contributions37 helpful votesHi there, I'm tempted to book a chalet too but since we are 4 in total (2 adults, 2 kids) I've been advised that I would have to take 2 chalets. So my question is, whether the chalets are really that small that you can't fit in 4 people or is it just a matter of you can't put another bed in. Please advise
BRgds, Andreas
Hi Andreas,
I'm sorry for the late reply, but we are still travelling.
The chalets are indeed very small and it would not be possible to put two extra beds in there I think.
It is a wonderful place though!
Good luck.
