We think, as many other people, that traveling is one of the best things in which we can devote our time and invest our money. And certainly, we also share the taste for incredibly beautiful places, near or far away, in which nature takes amazing forms and which may be enjoyed in very different ways. For that reason, we chose one of the most wonderful places to live and to enjoy with every guest his experience in El Chalten, a unique place. We started to build our house in 1999. It took some time, and in november of the year 2001 we finally opened B&B, were we offer tourists comfortable rooms, with private bathrooms or shared bathrooms, warmly decorated, and carefully cleaned. Nothofagus B&B is a small place, it only has seven rooms. Therefore, it offers our guests a very quiet space and enables us to provide to each of our guests a caring and personal service. We look forward to see you here. Eva and Gerardo.

Amazing customer service. Shortly after we made the booking online the B&B messaged us to say there was an error and the room was actually unavailable, rather than cancel our reservation and leave us to work it out (which many others would have done) they found us an alternative place to stay. The alternative accommodation was more expensive but Northofagus insisted they would pay the difference as it was their fault the booking system failed. I thought this was really so kind. Thankfully, we did end up having the chance to stay with Northofagus, it is in a great location, clean & comfy rooms, fab breakfast. 100% recommend.

Great place to stay in El Chalten: very comfortable and clean. Staff were all very nice and helpful, the service was great. We got one of the rooms with private bathroom and it was big, clean, luminous and very comfortable.
Breakfast was ok, not hot plates, but had all the basics.

We stayed at the Nothofagus Inn in El Chalten in March 2006, bookending a 4 day
backpack through the FItz Roy and Cerro Torre range.
While strictly a hotel, this is actually an upgraded hostel, fairly spartan on most accounts, but plenty
comfortable with immaculately clean rooms, good water pressure, excellent heat
and extremely friendly proprietors (one speaks English completely fluently, the
other speaks some English as well). There are no TVs, telephones, etc - the
rooms are primarily just beds, night stand, and lamp. It is very windy in El
Chalten and when the wind blows the hotel tends to creak and shake a bit - I
found earplugs helpful but not necessary.
Breakfast is served downstairs and consists of fresh bread and juice with
preserves and butter.
I thought the owners were the best part of the stay - they are most friendly,
very helpful, and very flexible. We arrived late at night and they stayed up
with us - and we had to leave very early in the morning and they got up with us
to make sure we had some breakfast before catching the 6 am bus. They are both
very friendly and know their small town and the local trails/hills very well.
We paid a bit under $50 per night, in high season.
These aren't luxury digs, but a simple and pleasant place to stay before or
after your backpacking trip. The only downside is that it is a bit of a walk
from the central road in town - bring warm clothes because there is usually a
lot of wind in this area. We would definitely stay here again.

Booking was easy via the internet. Since this is a small place they could not take a deposit, but just asked me to phone or email to confirm a couple of days ahead. Fair enough, since this is a popular place and no-shows could be a pain. People were being turned away the whole time I was there, and the place was full.
The rooms are comfy and attractive, well insulated from the persistent wind and well heated too. Breakfasts, as has been said before, are very basic and the packed lunches a bit monotonous.
The young couple who run the place seem to be taking a hands-off approach and are not particularly friendly: they are very preoccupied with their young children. Much of the running is left to a young woman, who is indifferent and sour almost to the point of rudeness. Get rid of her and I would recommend the place.

U2 were quite a cool band once. Then, a few albums after Revolver & a bit of critical acclaim, they became a bunch of clowns who have infected a zillion iPhones with an album that no one wants; there are even apps around that are designed specifically to remove this parasitic ear worm from your Apple.
See, that's the thing with Nothofagus. The place is cool; rooms are awesome, the showers hot, location decent & beds suitably comfortable after numerous days plodding about in the wilderness, sleeping under sub-standard canvas.
But there's a catch. They got a mention in the lonely planet - a bite from the forbidden apple that has only had a detrimental effect. Like Taco Bell's impact upon the worlds' impression of Mexican gastronomy, the blight of an LP "thumbs up" is so often a warning sign; enduced into a false sense of security & self assurance that means they forget the one thing that made them great in the first place. Lured by writings of a hearty breakfast & an infamous welcome, we walked somewhat proudly into the foyer - displaying somewhat ominously a trip advisor excellence certificate from 2013 - rather like me headlining my CV with my 50m swimming certificate.
Our bus left at 7:30am the next morning; something not unfamiliar in a mountain region that is served by a strict and gruelling timetable of early starts & long days. Upon being informed (curtly) that breakfast was served from 7:30 and not before, significant efforts were made to try to negotiate a compromise, and perhaps a little flexibility in the availability of some cereal and tea - not a significant ask for a £50 a night hostelry. When not one but two different counter staff relied with similar curt and robust sounding responses to the negative, it was clear that the the place was about as welcoming as a chicken's bottom.
In stark contrast, two previous nights (before camping adventures) had been spent in a different place across town - Hosteria Lago Viedma. Not blessed with the fantastic building or rapturous acclaim afforded to Nothofagus, the small family run establishment had nonetheless done what they could with merge surroundings. It wasn't top drawer but the service, welcome and assistance was wonderful; a credit to Argentinian hospitality.
It's a shame really. Nothofagus, it's cute blue chalet and generous double beds, should be a winner. But just as the world found out with U2, several Grammys and a TV deal has made a once good thing, well, a bit naff really, which although easily fixed, remains a bit of a blight.
So the message here is quite simple; do yourself (and Nothofagus) a favour for a few months; give somewhere else a try & let Nothofagus rediscover the generous spirit which got them into "the book" into the first place. It's too late for Bono & his hat-wearing chums. Let's hope it's not for this place.

Response from NothofagusElChalten, Gerente at Nothofagus Bed & Breakfast
Responded Mar 14, 2015
First of all, I apologize for my english. I am sorry that you are gone with that impression of our B & B. But, with all due respect, I do not think you make a fair description of the situation. It is clear that you like writing and you do it very creatively. But your discomfort is summarized that we didn´t advance the breakfast schedule for your personal convenience, the rest is verse and poetry. We have a small, family run guest house, for a medium budget traveler (or honestly rather low compared to the service offered in the area). Indeed there is a specific time when the person in charge of the breakfast starts working. As happens in every job: you start at a time and finish in another. In fact you forgot to mention that we have prepared you a breakfast (simplest), to have a coffee or tea, with bread and jam, before the scheduled time. It does not seem very gentle judging our work of years sarcastically, having stayed one night and demand services that are perfectly offered at certain times. As an example of the "flexibility" you demand, in case you do not remember, your original reservation was for two nights,. You canceled us the first night with a couple of days notice, without payment of penalty, and without worrying about whether such cancellation prejudiced us in some way. But that information, or the fact that we offered you a breakfast (simpler for being out of schedule) does not seem to match your creative story. At all times (website, posters in reception) breakfast hours are informed. I take the audacity to suggest to you that the next time, choose an accommodation that match schedules with your personal travel plan, or who have staff available for you 24 hours. Yes, probably you would have to pay a higher budget. We love receiving guests from around the world and offer them the best of us: from the comforts of our home, our advice and recommendations to enjoy the area. But providing an honest service, is not equivalent to obey the slogan "the customer is always right". Respect must exist in both directions, from who provides a service and from whom requests. Again I am sorry that you are gone with this opinion, and I apologize for my english writing.

Nothofagus was the perfect spot for us -- their rooms are comfortable and clean, breakfast was good, and most wonderfully, their receptionist went above and beyond helping us sort out some lodging and travel plans for our next two days in El Calafate. They were REALLY helpful and responsive. Definitely recommend staying here if you can -- just be sure to book in advance!

this is a sweet B&B with a comfortably sized room for two people (we had one of the rooms with private bath). Front desk staff speak English and are wonderfully friendly and helpful in every way including booking various tickets if necessary. All amenities are available including a place to pick up cold drinks, lovely breakfast (included), 2 options for box lunches, a safe in the room, free tea in the afternoon and a quick walk to most places. Our room and bath were immaculately clean. Heartily recommend

This is a clean, basic, friendly B&B in an excellent location in El Chalten. We shared the bathroom and didn't find it inconvenient. Excellent value - I believe they only accept cash. They helped book our bus travel to El Calafate.
Just a general tip for traveling in Argentina - bring as many US dollars as you feel comfortable with because you can often get a 10-15% discount at hotels, restaurants, and shops by paying in dollars. Also, we were only able to get 1000 pesos at a time out of the ATMs (equal to $210) which really racked up the ATM charges. I wished I had known this before. Also, I brought an adaptor which said it would work in South America but it didn't fit the outlet. I suggest bringing your whole set of adaptors to ensure you have the right one (it turns out it was the adaptor labeled with Asian countries that fit the outlet).

The B&B is located off the main street though it's very accessible to the main facilities, bus terminal and the trail starting points. The staff gave very useful information about the town of El Chalten and the various trails in the backyard. I had an individual room (room number 2) and it had a good view of the cerros through the window. The only annoyance was the stench from the toilet bowl. Breakfast had a good spread of coffee, tea, juices, yogurt, cheese, ham, and individual servings of buns. A good B&B to put up in for some quiet rest after trail walkings.

After reading the almost universally positive reviews about Nothofagus, the reality proved a bit disappointing. There were several small details which I felt made the stay underwhelming.
Negatives included:
- amongst the furthest hostels from the start of the walks (adding on an extra 10mins to each walk) and restaurants.
- hostel did not have any maps of the walks or town for guests
- cold atmosphere, perhaps due to the low season, but meaning most of spare time was spent at other pubs/restaurants with friendlier atmosphere
- although we booked a double room with a private bathroom we were provided with a twin room with a shared bathroom which we felt was expensive for $25 per person per night
- very slow WiFi
However the positives included:
- decent breakfast before the hikes
- hot water and teabags supplied for afternoon tea
- clean rooms and communal areas.
