Visiting the Schloss Saareck in Mettlach had been on my bucket list for a long time. As a real V&B fan I was so excited to get in touch with this place, all the history and the little V&B treasures I was hoping to find. Combine it with a few outlet visits and to me this sounds like a pretty perfect weekend to be honest. When I approached the property it was a truly impressive driveway. Old light fixtures, old trees and hidden behind a curve and some old buildings which looked like they needed some work, there it was: the castle. Although and especially at night everything looked exactly like you would image a horror castle, it was quite charming. What pops into your eye is that they don’t exploit the full potential of this place. The park is big and nice but not exciting, there is an old ship wreck rotting in the corner, the houses you have to pass in order to reach the main building look pretty rough and there is character and flair missing all over. When you enter the castle the outer appearance gets taken into the place everything old massive and full of history. Lots of dead animals on the wall, big couches and not much lighting. The reception is just a small desk and it seems like they really need to add some staff here or establish some automatism to their check in routines to avoid crowds and prevent loss. All in all I was expecting some more Villeroy and Boch Flair. I mean we are talking about a company producing or labeling chairs, morning coats and lights. None of those can be found in this castle. You would have to visit my place to find that. The room was small and their hasn’t been much Love put in to it. I mean a really basic empty loveless room. The bath was embarrassingly dis functional for a company producing this stuff. The towels looked old and the soap dispenser was just disgusting. Just as the toilet where you could see stains from past visitors. All corners where dusty and just not well cleaned. The breakfast was basic but when considering the price just not enough the times where short and the staff was again not enough. Why can’t they use matching tea pots to the rest? Where did they get those huge coffee pots from? Again here love and Details went missing. I don’t necessarily will come again although I enjoyed my time here.

Our overall impression of Schloss Saareck was as the heading says...could do better. Given this is a Villeroy and Bosch Hotel, it did not have the edge that we have experienced in other high end hotels. Reception was in the sitting room, and on arrival we almost felt that we had arrived on the wrong day, given the reception we were given. Our room "Cannes" was o.k. with a great view over the grounds, which are quite vast, and although the room was very spacious, it lacked any sort of wow factor, with the decoration being a bit insipid. The shower room was furnished to a high standard, which only highlighted that the bedroom was sadly lacking character. The hotel information stated that guests had to ask at reception for bath robes, which my wife did, and was told that there were none available?! The hotel was far from full. We had the set course evening meal, which was to a high standard, but we were sat on a table for two, alongside the table used for displaying the food for breakfast, which was stacked with crockery for the following morning. Again, lacking any form of ambiance Breakfast was a varied selection of cold meats and fruit etc, and eggs could be ordered, but again it was slightly lacking on selection that we have had at similar standard hotels. The location is perfect for walking and seeing the local attractions and overall we had a good stay, but think it just needs sharpening up to the quality that you would expect of a hotel of this standard.

Well found this place on google and a great find it is. A castle of Villeroy & Boch. Picturesque like out of a movie with nice grounds. Very well kept no dust to be seen. Stayed in large room which was lovely with large bathroom walk in shower. Breakfast was nice too. Probably best to have dinner out. We ate at one of the hotels on the corner in town. Hotel Schwan. Large portions and very tasty but no German dessert. The hotel has steps and no lift so if you have a problem with stairs might be an issue. We walked into town along the river path and not the way we drove in. It’s shorter and wilder!

This Guesthouse is incredible! Set on a large property which is flanked on one side by the Saar River the house is stunning. Strolling through the grounds is so peaceful. Tastefully decorated throughout. We were given an upgrade (Vivian Room) at no extra cost when I informed them that climbing stairs is not easy for me (we did not realize that the room we booked was on the third floor and FYI there is no lift for people but the lift will take your luggage up or down). How thoughtful of the man at the reception for doing this!!! I wish I had asked him his name. The VIVIAN room is AWESOME! Breakfast is served buffet style with a large variety of meats, cheese, cerezal, fruit, yoghurts etc and the eggs are made to your liking. Everything is served on that beautiful Villeroy and Boch plate ware. So elegant!! Everyone I met who worked in this guesthouse were cordial and professional. I cannot recommend this guesthouse enough.

What was once an aristocratic-bourgeois domain of the Villeroy & Boch is now a charming hotel with no room as the other. It is sought after for seminars, festivities and marriages. Food is only provided in the framework of an event.
