an amazing experience with great service and excellent food. The beds were amazing. The fire place was a real treat as they made the fire for us in the room so after dinner the room was toasty warm. the recommended road is breathtakingly beautiful but be very careful the potholes are a real problem. Add an extra hour into your drive time as you have to go very slow through those sections.

My family and I have just spent a week at Makalali and have had the most wonderful time. Without a doubt, the game drives were our favourite part. Our rangers (Pilot and Shadrack) were really unbelievable and made every effort to give us the best experience in the bush. Both were so knowledgeable and were great to deal with - for both the adults and the kids. The room was extremely spacious and comfortable, with views into the bush. And was immaculately cleaned. Service all round was great. All the staff made every effort to assist and make us comfortable. And in general the staff were friendly and available. The food was good. And we were particularly impressed that the kitchen decided to accommodate us with kids friendly meals - without us even having to ask for this. This was really fantastic and appreciated. Thank you for the lovely week. We will without a doubt be back!

Me and my wife spent 3 nights at Makalali River Camp 1, the best time we had in a long time. From the first arrival you are greeted with a smile and helpful staff, the staff at the lodge are very nice and carrying people. Of the 3 nights spent we where the only people in the whole entire camp. And still the lengts they went to to give us a amazing experience was just wonderful. Isaac and Anton our guides for the week was just great, tracked the wild every morning and evening and learned us soo mich about the anaimals. We saw some amazing sites during our stayf. Then the food. WOW. I think in the time we are currently we understand tourism are hard hit and have to cut on certain areas, food definitely was not one of the areas, they serve the most amazing meals, breakfast lunch and dinner. And such nice portions. We ate breakfast on the rover banks. Had some drinks at the pools. The staff is friendly and thank you to- Isaac, Anton, Dorithy, Lizzy, Annietjie( the food is amazing) and Mussa for making our stay at Makalali special. Ps. Not criticism more a note, ( as this was 1 person and not a reflection of our time with the people that looked after us) please do indicate in a brochure or somewhere and adequate amount for tipping, we as people who dont make use of these lodges at all, often go by gut feel on what to tip, and I was a bit uncomfortable when asked by check out staff if this will be all that we will be tipping. I am lead to believe this is customary but also to your own discretion and one should not be made to feel guilty. But everything else was amazing. I give it 5 stars as I will mot let 1 persons view for 3 minutes ruin my view of this beautiful place.

Makalali Private Reserve is a gem. Don't be put off by the fact that it is not open to the Kruger Park as it is 30000 hectares of beautiful bush with every animal you could wish to see. Of course you don't always see everything but the rangers/trackers are amazing and will find most of the animals for you. If they find something of interest they will follow the tracks of the animal into the bush in the Landcruiser and usually find it for you..... super exciting. The rangers are very informative and the hotel and staff are beyond helpful. we have stayed at both the lodge and the hotel and I love both for different reasons. The lodge is small and intimate, 10 to 12 people only, with commensurately smaller facilitates ( pool etc) The hotel has huge facilities, lounges, dining areas, decks, a well stocked bar and a lovely rim flow pool. Hard to choose but you will not be sorry you visited Makalali.

We booked a 3 night stay in Makalali Main Lodge, and ended up booking an extra day as we just couldn’t leave! Our stay started off slightly bumpy, with our transfer being an hour and a half late, but was completely forgotten as the arrival and departure fee was wavered, and we found a delicious 2013 bottle of red on our bed with a hand written apology from the manager, to say all was forgiven and forgotten is an understatement. The 4 nights were absolutely perfect, from the great service by the very friendly staff and manager, to the delicious food (especially the amazing desserts), clean rooms and beautiful decor and layout of the entire lodge, including the fact that the lodge isn’t fenced off so on arrival you see monkeys in the lodge, and watch the waterbuck and nyala grazing which relaxing by the beautiful pool. The game drives for us both we’re just indescribable, Chadrick and Richard were absolute superstars, great humour and incredibly knowledgable and so talented at tracking the animals, to the point in the first 3 days we’d seen the big 5, hyenas, a cheetah hunt, warthogs, hippos, giraffes, zebras and more, on top of this we got to stop in the bush during each game drive for coffees and drinks! If I could give the lodge 6 stars I would!
