I have two sides of my review today and while on a very expensive holiday which is also our honeymoon it’s something you absolutely don’t or did not want to deal with!! (No one would want this) I will start with the positive though as I’m always going to be honest and reflect my own personal thoughts and will never just go in for the kill as that’s not who I am unless it’s for good reason. So firstly Aitutaki Escape consist of 3 villas and we were in the middle villa number 2 which is a single bedroom villa. Upon arriving we were taken back by the massive villa we were going to be having all to ourselves (with a private little plunge pool too) and some of the features were beautiful. Our favourite of course was the deck leading to the beach which on a sunny day was stunning to sit and relax and eat your breakfast. Breakfast is a large portion of fruit, granola with yoghurt, boiled eggs, bread, tomato, cucumber, lettuce and a danish or croissant. Also you get meat which for us most days was sliced ham and salami but one day we got sausages and our last day salmon. This should definitely tie you over for the day or at least the morning with some snacks left over. The staff, we thought the staff were lovely and like anywhere we stay we treat everyone with kindness and respect no matter who they are or what they do. Helen and Rachel were awesome and we had a great chat with them when we first arrived. The lagoon/beach it’s picture perfect but there are a heap of sea cucumbers (or slugs if you prefer) so take some reef shoes but if they don’t bother you then enjoy as they do keep the water clean and striving. Ok the hardest part of our review :( and yes it’s long but I feel it does need to be explained properly as in all honesty it was handled correctly but we did feel horrible (even though we shouldn’t feel that way) and then as though we were liars or made to feel guilty (might not of been purposely but it’s actually how we felt). This is 100% something NO ONE wants to deal with while on holiday and especially us as it ruined our entire holiday (along with the weather sadly but we did our best with that as you can’t change Mother Nature). So, before leaving Rarotonga to go to Aitutaki we counted our money we leave in our travel wallet and topped up our spending one. We had $2250 left to spend and enjoy (wedding gift money) and locked it away in our bag which stays with us the entire trip! Ok so now we get to Aitutaki Escape and decide to be extra safe and would put it into the room safe which we get to choose our own personal code (like any hotel) rather than carry it around or leave in our suitcase. We don’t go into the safe during this time until 3 days in where on the Thursday we wanted to check our spending and add it all up (from the start we noted down our spending thankfully) and randomly we are down $600 and we start to think did we over pay somewhere? Did we drop it? Like what happened because it’s been in a safe! So we recount and double, triple check and we have $1650 left which once again goes into the safe. This is where things took the light bulb omg turn, on the Saturday we were doing a lagoon cruise and needed our passports so we grab these out and decide hey let’s check our money and to our surprise and I mean SURPRISE we are now missing another $200 so we only have $1450 left so that’s $800 in total gone! Obviously this is impossible, it’s in a safe! Wtf! So we go to Thomas the owner who calls his police friend straight away (Alfred is his name) but keeps making mention of how it’s never happened before, he’s the only one with the master key etc which fair enough but that doesn’t mean much to us when we are down such a massive amount! The policeman came and took down minimal information (possibly because we were being picked up for a prepaid cruise any moment at the time) and proceeded to say it will also cost us $30 to get a police report (more money). I would like to thank Thomas here though as he decided sometime while we were in Rarotonga to pay for the report for us and that is appreciated and he emailed it through to us when we were back home in New Zealand. We enjoy our cruise but feel extremely defeated and uncomfortable and to be honest thankful we are leaving the next day! Sunday the day we are leaving Thomas comes to our villa and just acknowledges he doesn’t know what to say and in all honesty what can be said we are guttered! He did though ask why we didn’t mention/report the $600 straight away which we had already explained before to him and Alfred that we didn’t think it was from the safe and didn’t want to create blame to anyone as I was blaming myself until the last $200 went missing (work it out $200 a day!!) he also one again said it’s never happened and also about the safe key etc. Sadly we paid a lot more than we wanted to stay in Aitutaki, we saved hard for this trip and that money was our gift to enjoy ourselves so the rest of our trip we really had to watch how we spent what we had left and also dip into our other savings. A 2 star is generous considering the situation but I have to say if it wasn’t for what happened I would have given a 4/5 star for the beautiful villa and view. Please note we have been advised the investigation is currently ongoing but anyone can save money for a rainy day or send it to family etc so we know it’s unlikely to be solved and does us no good our holiday is already done.

Kia Orana From Aitutaki Escape, We appreciate and accept this report from Rachel and Maniaro regarding their recent stay with us. We also appreciate and understand their concerns and feelings regarding this unfortunate incident that has fallen on them. Being a very small operation with long serving staff it has also been a huge concern to all of us as we have not faced a situation such as this. At this time we are relying on the open investigation being conducted by our Police Department to find the culprit(s). We would like to thank Rachel and Maniaro for their report and can only offer our apologies for what has happened to them…..we are counting on the Police investigation to bring a positive closure to this. Kindest Regards, Teumere Koteka-Heather Sales & Marketing Director Aitutaki Escape.

When we walked into the entrance, we stopped and stood with amazement. A beautiful pool and lovely outdoor space that was just perfect for really relaxing and winding down. We walked up to the front entrance of the villa and as the door opened we were again taken back with the space our villa had and the view out to the water, past the second outdoor space. We appreciated the attention that had been taken by the staff to prepare our villa and welcome us. Immaculate, clean. Just so perfect. This must be the best place to stay on the island and is close by some lovely places to eat. The questions below don't apply at this resort. It's small, totally private and boutique.

A delightful villa which really did feel like your own slice of paradise. I have to say the accommodation was first class and had the added bonus of the private pool to cool off in if the tide wasn't favourable. The staff were exceptional and this comes from the head, Thomas n his wife Lizzie who would go out of their way to source anything that we so desired. Our lovely housekeepers were so friendly and also would assist us with any request we had. By the end of our stay they felt like family. The whole villa was constructed with coral walls which look unique and a thatched roof which staff suggested represented a canoe travelling over the coral towards the lagoon. The marble flooring was ideal to keep the villa cool, and of course air con in both the lounge and bedroom, if there wasn't enough through breeze. On our last night we had Thomas' renowned 'dinner under the stars' which was an absolute stunning feast of mammoth proportions and with every morsel so delicious it was hard to resist. It included a seafood extravaganza of tuna sashimi, lightly crumbed crab claws, prawns and scallops followed by our main of rib eye fillet and lamb rack. I had seen on previous reviews of Thomas' ability as a chef and he did not disappoint! The continental breakfast they provided daily was always a treat and some of it we would keep for a light lunch or nibble in the late afternoon. There were a few things that were a bit tired as the property is 12 years old but with the difficulty of getting materials and their full occupancy they had been put on hold. Our overall experience was fantastic and we would love to come back and stay again. There are kayaks to freely use. I would recommend bringing your own snorkel and flippers as there are some easy snorkels on the point that you can kayak to. Strongly recommend a car or scooter which they can organise for you, however do it before you arrive as these were limited. Thomas kindly did a stock up of things we requested for the fridge but we chose to dine out at many lovely restaurants around the island for both lunch and dinner. The blue tooth speaker was a great asset, as was their selection of movies if we felt like watching something. There are only three villas in this complex so it really is a great Aituaki Escape!

We loved our visit to Aitutaki! Staff were friendly and so happy. Breakfast each day was a delight, we had so much food. Make sure you book a dinner cooked by Thomas.... OMG to die for, we had so much food. The villa is right on the beach, has a lovely private pool, huge king size bed, fully equipped kitchen. Talk about peace and tranquility. This property has to be the most relaxing place we styed during our 3 week Cook Island vacation. The front of the unit has it's own dock with lounges at the end, the deck is spacious with loungers, table and chairs, the unit is well appointed and we enjoyed the blue tooth speaker so we could enjoy our tunes. Huge bathroom with an equally huge shower. The private pool off the back with it's 8 foot high fence is very nice with deck so you can lounge and sun tan. You must have dinner when you stay as well. Probably the best meal we had. If you want to get way and decompress this is the place to go! Amazing staff on the property. Great breakfast to start the day.

Aitutaki Escape was EVERYTHING! From the airport pickup with a lei to the final drop-off, we spent a carefree 10 days in paradise. Our villa had everything we needed. We enjoyed everything from walking on the beach to kayaking to relaxing on the beach loungers under the umbrellas to swimming in our own pool. When the restaurant was open (sadly, only twice), it was the best food on the island. The breakfasts were unbelievable! There was more than enough food for the 2 of us. Although I still rate it 5, there were 3 issues that bothered us, although none that much. Even though I paid more $1000 a night, I got charged $15 extra when I asked for additional coffee pods. I thought that was pretty ridiculous and petty. I had not been warned that would happen. Why have that type of coffee machine sitting out if guests will have pay extra for pods? Surprise!! The other is that one day we came back to the villa, and there were 4 children swimming in our pool. It took us quite a while to get them to leave. They were rude and talked back to us, saying they didn't have to leave! We finally determined they belonged to Thomas. I am not sure why they were permitted to swim at guests' villas, because my understanding is that children under 16 aren't permitted there. That was one big reason I chose Aitutaki Escape. Finally, for several days, someone was burning trash right over our fence. We had not only smoke, but pieces of burned material. The smoke was a problem. But I would still return to Aitutaki Escape.

Kia Orana, Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to post a review about your stay with us. We apologise for the late reply as there were a few issues raised that we needed to look into. Nevertheless, we are happy that your overall stay with was pleasant. We will be reviewing our additional coffee pods policy. Thank you very much for bringing that issue to our attention. In regards to the 4 children swimming in the pool, we sincerely apologise for this and will get to the bottom of it. Also I can assure you that the kids did not belong to Thomas as all his children and grand children live in Rarotonga. We suspect they could have been local children living in the area. If you had advised us of this issue on the day we would have dealt with it then. We really appreciate that you have brought this to our attend. We will now be implementing an after hours staffing patrol to ensure this does not happen again. Aitutaki Escape is surrounded by private properties that we do not have any control over at times. Also fires are not prohibited in Cook Islands. It is part of our life style which is a normal for us but offensive to others. We sincerely for this and will sort it out so that this does not happen again. All in all, thank you for choosing to stay with us. We really value your feedback as this will help us improve our services for all our future guests. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Kia Manuia, Mene

You will love the quiet ambient and total privacy. There are only 3 rooms, depending on the number of guests you will need the proper one. The villas are close from the airport which is convenient to enjoy every second you spend there. Breakfast was plenty and tasty. There is a landscape view very near, "Maungap", so you can literally go walking from your room and back, just wear comfortable clothing and protect yourself from the sun. Thomas is very professional and will make sure your stay is a charm. You can ask him to make proper reservations for any available activity you plan, like getting to the scooter rental, lagoon tours, dining. You are also welcome to use the bikes provided at the villas. Want to explore the front beach? no problem, you can go walking or you can use the kayaks over there. If you feel like cooking, there's a kitchen and fridge. Since there isn't artificial illumination at night, you will have the chance to observe the sky and stars. Thomas cooks 1 or 2 times a week. If you are offered the opportunity to dine there, do it, no regrets since it was the best dinner in the island. We preferred this location than a hotel and we do not regret, because we didn't have to deal with plenty of people or personnel. As a honeymoon stay, you can't value enough the fact that you are there only for your beloved one. We are very happy we had the chance to visit.

Firstly, thank you Thomas, Mene and girls. My husband and I stayed at Aitutaki Escape in August. I can't rate this place high enough. It was enjoyable from start to finish. First 2 nights we had a beautiful dinner prepared by Thomas in our Villa, seafood platter for 2, it was delicious. The bed was very comfy and the sunsets amazing. The girls prepared and brought breakfast to our villa each morning. It was uplifting to listen to the girls and how cheery they were, working side by side, laughing and happy. For me all these little things made our holiday more enjoyable. Thomas helped prepare a range of activities for us over our stay, of which on reflection I wished we had done more especially with TeKing and his crew, the snorkelling was amazing. Can't wait to go back, if they will have me ;)

We stayed at Aitutaki Escape for 6 nights in August 2019. We were collected from the airport and then greeted by Thomas at our villa, which backed directly onto the most spectacular lagoon. The self-contained villa was very nice and comfortable, with two air conditioners and its own private pool. A more than plentiful continental breakfast was delivered directly to our villa each morning. Thomas was the perfect host: he was willing to assist as much or as little as we needed. As it turned out, we hired a car and were happy to do our own thing most of the time. However, we dined at the on-site restaurant - Rumours Café - on our first night, and the food was spectacular. The rear of the villas face west, so sitting on the deck and watching the sun set over the lagoon provides the perfect ending to each day. Our villa was also equipped with a TV unit containing 2,000 movies, which we also took advantage of and enjoyed immensely. On our final night, we arranged to have a meal delivered to our room – expecting to simply eat it in our dining area whilst watching a movie. Instead, Thomas arranged to have a table set up outside on our deck, which turned out to be a truly amazing experience. Once again, the food was delicious and incredible. We really cannot recommend Aitutaki Escape highly enough. The reviews we read prior to booking were great but did not adequately sum up the wonder of this beautiful property (as I am sure this review does not). We will certainly come back and when we do, we will look no further than Aitutaki Escape. Finally, a big thanks to Thomas and his staff for making our stay so great, and also to Mene for her wonderful assistance during the booking process. Kia Manuia!

Aitutaki Escape is small, only three villas, but perfect for an intimate, romantic vacation in paradise. Thomas, the owner and chef at the resorts small restaurant, is delightful, going out of his way to create an itinerary for us to insure we enjoyed his island. The villas are beyond spectacular, my wife being stunned when seeing it for the first time. Very large and spacious, with it's own private courtyard pool, either of the two one-bedroom villas or the one two-bedroom villa are just what you need for total privacy. Right on the beach, with your own kayaks to use, if you felt like some exercise other than biking around the atoll on the provided bicycles, or hiking along the quiet roadway. A short hike to the top of the highest peak gives an almost 360 degree view of the atoll. Take a lagoon cruise to fully explore this paradise (Thomas set us up with TeKing Cruises, who picked us up outside our door for the day long excursion). On select nights, Thomas cooks for his guests in the Rumours restaurant attached to the lobby, with a good selection of very tasty dishes. However, it is the breakfasts he provides every morning, delivered directly to your door, that left you wondering if you would be hungry again come dinner time. The atoll itself is simply spectacular, described by some as the most beautiful island in the world (my vote is it's a tie with Bora Bora). The Escape is just that--a perfect chance to escape to paradise.
