Absolute Heave We were lucky enough to stay in this Heavenly place from 5/19-6/1/21 & it was pure bliss! Hotel Makanda by the Sea, is absolutely gorgeous in every way, but what truly makes it stand out from anywhere else is the staff!💖 I cannot praise them enough for making our stay one we will never forget! Reservations for The Makanda do fill up fast, but never feels crowded…and when in the restaurant in the evenings, with several other visitors, the staff can make you feel like you are the only ones there. A Very, Very special THANK YOU to Alex, one of our servers who would welcome us each night with “Hello Family!” and his big welcoming smile! (Our 1st night there, Alex explained to us, that while we were there, we were Makanda’s family). Alex was not the only stand out person who made our vacation extra special, every single staff member went Above & Beyond! We literally could hang out as friends with anyone there, Truly a Very Special Place!!! Thank you so much , Diego, Luis, Alex , Leo C, Jorge , Amanda, Jacqueline, Leo M. & I know I’m forgetting a few, but seriously everyone!!!💖💖💖 The amenities are superb & rooms are stunning! My son & his GF stayed in an Ocean View & my husband & I stayed in the tropical suite. Both rooms are beautiful! The Ocean is one of the newer updated rooms & the Tropical was the more traditional jungle themed & a little older but a Lot bigger & had a wrap around deck with a hammock😊 Ladies, if staying in the Tropical, you may want a makeup light, but it’s not too bad. The ocean view from the 2nd floor Tropical is Stunning! We saw a few of the other rooms, with the private pools & they are jaw dropping! We will definitely be getting one of those on our next visit! There is a private beach that the staff can take you to by golf cart (it’s a steep walk) and there are drinks & chairs and swings when you get there. The food at the Makanda is absolutely delicious! We loved everything! Friday nights there are Dj’s at the main pool & the other private pool for guests only has a sushi bar in the afternoon & a spectacular view!! I highly recommend Hotel Makanda by the sea if an Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica! Pura Vida!!

This is a lovely boutique hotel. You are up on a hillside overlooking the ocean from nearly every spot and surrounded by beautiful plant and animal filled grounds. Outside our room were white faced monkeys, sloth, toucan and macaw along with several other colorful birds, and more iguana than you need. All personnel were super friendly and helpful. We enjoyed an amazing upgrade half way through, as we had planned to change our room, and when we did a "villa" became available and they gave it at the lower priced space (a WOW room). We were in Villa One, which had a hot tub and very nice private pool. That being said we would have been happy in the "ocean 11" we were in, it was very comfortable and great views. These are the Delux Suite Ocean club ( if you choose Ocean view , be sure not to be on the lower level, it is a little closed in, over the pool area and no real view.) While the hotel buildings are on a steep hillside, everything is near by and while you may go up and down some hillsides, they are almost all on a ramp, not so many stairs at all. I navigated it just fine and I'm 72. The golf carts came in very handy when going to their beach, which is stoney but lovely and there are several nice sandy beaches near by, we loved the " secret beach". not so secret, but very pleasant . Breakfast was always very nice, all fresh and a great array of fruit. Each morning a different juice drink, usually a combo of citrus. We ate lunch and /or dinner their a few times, the fish was alway lovely, other courses lacked interest for the most part, and yes it is a bit pricy. I suggest no matter what you are getting, premium liquor in your drink, COVID tests in your room, a boat trip, there is always an upcharge, I made the error of ordering a "premium vodka", ( the one from Texas) at the pool, for a double shot bloody mary, it was over $40 US. This is a resort, so I should have expected it. Nevertheless, think before you buy. I saw a guy at breakfast discretely adding vodka from his thermos to a virgin mary! As I said the space between the buildings is very reasonable to navigate, and what is architecturally interesting is you never think you are in a small compound, it is just the opposite, we always felt we had our privacy. And it was very nice to experience the area on ramps, that did not infringe on the natural beauty of the area with trials. smart ecological decision. Yes,we would certainly come here again, I really have no negatives. It was very very clean, and feeling quit new, the staff were very helpful and there when you needed them. The clientele were mostly 30 something and seemed to be on a honeymoon! It was also a very diverse group of people, which was lovely. Great, great place. Stick to fish dishes and salads and you will enjoy!

This is a glorious amazing jungle paradise that anyone would be lucky to visit. The rooms - gorgeous. Truly unique, and you can see a lot of thought went into the high end design. The pools - gorgeous. Surrounded by jungle and they have hot tubs!! The beach - natural and beautiful!! We saw so many little hermit crabs. There’s even a kayak for guests to use. The ride down is a ball. The restaurant - so tasty!!!! Really exceptional food, best food we had in Manuel Antonio. Artful, delicious, upscale, beautiful. Love this gem of a place, better than the photos

This hotel is incredible from start to finish. The location is perfect. You feel tucked away in the jungle amongst the animals and trees, while being just five minutes from town. The pools are beautiful, with incredible views. The food (breakfast, lunch & dinner) is amazing and fresh. The spa treatments are amazing. The rooms are lux and very comfortable. The staff is beyond amazing. They’re fun, helpful and informative. A beautiful, relaxing and fun getaway spot close enough to any and all Costa Rican activities. A must visit hideaway!

Makanda By The Sea goes a long way to checking all the boxes regarding vacation essentials including service, location, views and amenities. The staff is beyond helpful and exudes a real pleasure in serving you and a joy in their work. The resort’s location, nestled on a hillside amid tropical vegetation, active wildlife and a symphony of bird song, is close enough to Manuel Antonio National Park to allow easy access to its wildlife trails and beaches and yet far enough away from the crowds to be the definition of a “Secluded Romantic Getaway.” While Makanda has its own fine dining open-air restaurant, within walking distance are several nice eating options including our favorite, Emilio’s Café. There are two pools and the hotel’s own safe swimming beach is staffed and kept sparkling clean. The bellmen and their golf-cart transportation are on call to take the effort out of the steep walk back from the beach. From our room’s terrace we saw monkeys and toucans in the morning and stunning sunsets at night. Breakfast is included and offered many tasty choices that were more than satisfying. We were there the beginning of May and were pleasantly surprised at the value. The rain was an on-again off-again companion to our stay, but that is to be expected during the rainy season in tropical Costa Rica and the weather is one thing for which the resort can’t be held responsible. We would return in a heartbeat.
