Wooow.. I don't write reviews often, but after staying 2 nights with an Explorica group at Beach Break "resort", I felt obligated to leave one. Upon arrival the place looks fine, a bit run down but nothing alarming.... I had a 100 room by the main pool. The room (s) definitely need updating and my room was INFESTED with mosquitoes. The 2 windows did not close fully and a large gap between the front door and the floor. I first thought the mosquitoes were mainly in the bathroom so I kept the door shut and thought that would work, but I was wrong. I left this place with easily 30 bites all over. I sprayed bug spray on my body and sheets before sleeping but was still basically ate alive. Another adult who was in the room next to mine saw what she thought were bed bugs along her mattress and moved rooms to the farther side ... I should have moved rooms immediately after seeing all the mosquitoes. We hiked all over Arenal and Monteverde prior to Jaco and I had no issues with mosquitoes, maybe 2 or 3 bites total. I checked my mattress and didn't see any evidence of bed bugs. The bed every time I sat down on it made cracking noises and sounded like it would break. A different adult said her shower door was moldy and falling off its hinges. Her bathroom also flooded during our stay. 2 other adults (shared room) in our group had to move rooms because of an ant infestation in theirs (200 hallway). The section of the hotel by the farther second pool looks like its been renovated, so I'd definitely request a room on that side if you have to stay at this property. The WiFi barely worked, mostly didn't work in my room... the only area with reliable service was by the front desk. There was a big storm our first night and a transformer blew so we went without electricity / AC for a whole night (be prepared with a flashlight and a portable phone charger). We heard power outages were pretty common in Jaco. You can see the reminats of better days at this place.. an abandoned swim up bar. Signs for a restaurant that doesn't exist. The room has no mini fridge. There is no ice machine or vending machine. Breakfast/dinner is catered in and was pretty tasty.. however, no fans in the outdoor dinning area and there was this high pitch humming noise during dinner that about drove me mad. Jaco Beach itself is awful. From a distance it looks ok but up close its covered in rocks, plant debris, trash, broken glass/ceramic pieces. Kids who spent time playing on the beach had bites all over their legs.. possibly sand fleas. The waves are huge and rough, rip tides, so don't expect to swim. You also cannot walk down the beach to other hotels because of a river next to this hotel... it rained A LOT during our trip.. so maybe during dryer times the river isn't as full and you can cross.. not sure. This hotel definitely has a contract with Explorica and World Strides. Almost everyone there was with a tour group. If you have any control over your itinerary I would 100% stay somewhere else, or even better, skip Jaco Beach all together. Because of the strong storm our first night, the road to Manuel Antonio flooded and was impossible to pass. So we had to spend a whole day in Jaco. It's a tourist trap, souvenir shop after souvenir shop with basically the same things and restaurants. That's it. We made the best of it and still had a decent time, but our trip definitely did not end on a high note.

The place has a lot of space and well kept, the pools are nice and clean and the beach is very near although not to swim, just to walk and hang out. Jaco beaches to swim are close though. We saw iguanas, racoons and squirrels :) Staff is pretty friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean, a little small, but comfortable. AC worked perfectly and there was cable tv. Improve opportunities: there isn't a restaurant in place so you need to order in or go to a restaurant. Bring lots and lots of repellent since mosquitoes are relentless.

The room was basic but clean and big enough, it missed a kettle though especialky as no breakfast was served. Good location on the beach and 10 min walk from the center. Nice smaller pool closer to the beach, kids loved it. Definitely good quality/price.

A last-minute change-of-plans and scant options meant a room at this hotel, luckily for only one night. Served the purpose of a place to sleep and shower. No restaurant nor bar on site. Considerable walk to restaurants/shops. Beware of walking toward town along the beach as you’ll have to wade through a dirty river mouth. Beach is dirty, rocky, and nowhere to sit. On the upside, the Tico travelers staying there appeared to be enjoying their stay, having fun poolside with their own beer-filled coolers and festive music playing. Also, the surf straight in front of hotel was fun.

Second time staying here, will be back again! This place is ON the beach, with ocean views from one of the pools and the restaurant/bar. Very excited to see a new bar/restaurant El Punto opened right next door, because our hotel one was COVID closed. Note it is easier to cross the little stream on the beach than to walk to it on the road, although it is of course possible. Porky's was open directly outside the front of the hotel property, too, for dining and drinks (we watched the Superbowl on their many TVs). The hotel itself is operating at what we call a budget COVID level. Front desk was always staffed with a nice helpful person, we got our included surf lessons (thanks Raul!), and we requested and received maid service once during our 5 night stay. Bottled water was not provided in the rooms, but was available in a filling station in the main area. Neither coffee nor any food was provided in the morning, nor were coffee makers available for the rooms. Bathrooms had bar hand soap only, no other toiletries. Pool and beach towels were provided, and all pools were open (no pool bar though). We walked north into town for a few meals and to stock up on the basics for the room (beer and snacks), as mini fridges ARE provided and encouraged to use in your rooms. You can bring your own drinks to the pool areas. COVID testing was required to re-enter the US, and we easily made an appointment request at the lab in the nice Jaco Walk outdoor shopping center online; they contacted us back via email in one day with our appointment times...they schedule YOU based on your flight time, which took the anxiety out of the process for our family. We did pay 77k colones, or about $130 USD per test, credit card or cash, at the lab. It was nice, new, and professional, emailing us our test results in 24 hours as promised (which fell on a SUNDAY). Hope this helps the other COVID era travelers :)

Great value, not a 5 star resort but our rooms were clean, shower fine, air conditioner worked, staff helpful, breakfast ok with awesome location overlooking beach , surf lessons awesome free bonus note just 1 a day use it or lose it, nice pools too. Get top floor if you don’t want to hear as much noise, not a party drunk place though, most people get up early and go to bed early

I’ve stayed at Beach Break Resort from February 20th till March 2nd 2020, this was my second experience there, first experience was at the same period last year. I liked it at my first experience, I liked it even more this year! Beach Break is a human size hotel, which is why I like it so much! You don’t step on each others, rarely a line up somewhere and you get to know most of the staff. For sure it’s not as luxurious as many other, but the place is cozy, clean and well maintained. Also, what I like about it is that it’s in a quiet area of Jaco, but still, less than a 5min walk of the town, which make it easy to visit the nice restaurants and bars of Jaco, without have to take a cab or a bus. Also, the staff is amazing, smiley, dedicated and professional, even when it get harder for them when it’s getting busy (especially on w-e), for sure they would appreciate to get some help and be better staffed for those period, but I have to say once again, that even when they felt overwhelmed and exhausted (I could feel it I work with public in tourism), they still act extremely professional! Kitchen side, food taste great, good quality ingredients and fresh, for sure, when you stay for a long period, it become redundant, but, not such a big issue for me. I want to make some shoot outs here to some individuals. First of all, Emilio : This guy is a gem for this resort! I spent 11 days at his bar and observed him working, with client he’s amazing, but also, as a bar tender : he date every bottles of juice/mix he use, keep his bar clean A.F., washing everything each time he use the counter, cutting board, knives, Mixer, etc. Putting every bottle, tools fruits back into place after each use. Never seen someone having such an amazing work ethic south of Florida. Please, management team, do all you can to keep Emilio, he’s a great asset for your resort, and an example for the rest of the staff!! I want to recognize also on bar side, Mahdi, which is a great worker also, a bit serious at first, but when she get to make jokes with you and start smiling, she make you feel special! Dinning side now, I want to shoot out some staff also, first Jody, this guy is simply incredible! Always smiling, joking around, fast, efficient and professional, he takes care of you in an amazing way, he have the perfect personality for that job! Also, as efficient and professional, but with a little bit more discreet personality, I have to thank Franconia and Joseph. The rest of the staff was also great, but these individuals are mainly the staff that made my vacations amazing and engraved in my memory for ever, they made the difference in my life, I told them personally before leaving, but black on white it’s even better: THEY MADE THE DIFFERENCE! I also want to thank Roxana for her help. I love the Beach Break, this place has HUGE potential to be ever better with some will and investments, I will definetly go back!!

Let me start by saying my husband & I have been enjoying 1 or 2 annual southern vacations for about 30 years now and have visited pretty much every corner from Cuba, Dominican, Jamaica, Roatan, Mexico, Curacuo, Barbados and so on but we find ourselves loving Costa Rica & putting it at the top of our list. This was our 4th time to this beautiful country and 2nd visit to Jaco. We decided to revisit Jaco (Jan 30 - Feb 6) because of it's gorgeous beach, friendly people, fun atmosphere, stunning sunsets and how accessible the downtown is no matter where you stay. The Beach Break is a small resort located along the south area of the beach which is considered the quieter end. We chose it because we've come to enjoy smaller resorts without the crowds and noise. Sure there was music playing at the pool side but it wasn't breaking an ear drum nor was there the "entertainment crew" collecting up guests for a conga line in the water, just the peaceful buzz of conversation with the sound of birds in the background and we could care less about a show in the evening before bedtime. I'd much prefer looking up at the stars with a drink in hand while listening to the waves as the tide makes it's way in to shore. I thank the Beach Break for providing ample lounge chairs at both pools and the beach although some could use replacing soon. There is nothing worse than "playing the chair game" that quite often is the case, particularly at large resorts, where by 6-7am all chairs seem to be claimed by a lone towel, old shirt, newspaper with no body in site for hours. You won't find that here and there is no problem seeking shade under an umbrella, palapa or palm tree. We booked through Air Tansat which had the option of a breakfast only or all-inclusive package and we did the later. There is only 1 dining room serving a buffet style meal. An a la carte menu is available at a cost. A select menu is provided as part of the all inclusive on Wednesdays only for lunch and dinner and for a daily afternoon snack where guests may choose 1 item. The one & only snack time is between 330pm & 430pm (lunch is noon - 2pm & dinner is 7 - 9pm). Now upon arrival at the hotel about 230pm and not eating since about 530am with the exception of the bite we had on the plane we were very hungry but were told no food was available for another hour but there were drinks at the bar. I do feel that there should be something to snack on during this gap of time. Thank goodness I had a bag of peanuts to get me thru. Small complaint other than that the food was fresh, tasty and eventhough each meal consisted of a very limited selection, the options did change daily. We ate dinner out of the resort 3 times which I highly recommend because there's so many awesome dining places in the area. Our room was spacious with 2 queen beds with a small fridge and safe. The shower was hit or miss with water pressure and temperature depending the time of day but hey it's happened at even the bigger resorts. The bed was comfortable enough however, the bedding and pillows were in need of replacing. There were broken sections of wood causing gaps in the underside of the porch roof over our door that needed repairing. We were awakened nightly by the scratching of a critter, I was told likely an iguana, renovating within the walls of our room. I mentioned it to the front receptionist however it didn't seem important. It was a topic of conversation at the breakfast table. Upon booking we upgraded to the Ocean front with all ground floor rooms. Depending on the room, you don't necessarily see the ocean but it's just steps away divided by the pool with it's beautiful garden setting. A bar and the one open air dining room is located in this area as well with a view of the ocean. The rooms located at the back section of the resort are in three 2 floor buildings all facing a pool with a pool bar as well as a smaller kiddy pool again in a lovely garden setting. I was told that most if not all of these rooms have been recently renovated. Jaco Beach is known for it's surfing and one can easily rent surf boards and sign up for lessons all along the beach including a Surf school at the Beach Break, all within a similar price range of $50 US per 2 hr lesson. We did not take a lesson but knew others that did and had a great time. We were happily entertained by watching especially at the Surf competition that takes place each Sat just south of Jaco at Playa Hermosa. In previous years we've did the zip-linig, the horse back riding, the hot springs, the mud baths, the monkey tours, the river cruises etc. and would highly recommend doing what ever you can while you are visiting. Other than a little repair work here and there and the bedding in need of replacing as well as some loungers the one thing that could have made my vacation better was for management to enforce the "No Smoking" policy. There are signs posted everywhere but there are always those inconsiderate guests who choose to ignore the rules. As well, many of these smoking guests discard their cigarette butts on the ground rather than dispose of them in the trash cans. This makes the grounds look disgusting and it's very difficult for the gardeners to try and rake up. My suggestion to management is if you're not going to enforce this policy then provide a "Smoking Area" at least then guests can be told to smoke there and the mess of the discarded cigarette butts can be contained to that area in a proper disposal container perhaps. Overall we had a great time. All the staff were very friendly and approachable right from the front desk, bar tenders, dining staff and security guards. I look forward to seeing you next year and the improvements that have been made.
