2022 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of 25 beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans (some with A/C), and free WiFi. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Caribe Fun Tours is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions.

Banana Azul was such an amazing start to our Costa Rica trip!! The staff was amazing and made us feel welcomed. Everyone spoke English and made it super easy to communicate. The room was gorgeous (crystal frog) and super clean. The food was great as well! 100% would recommend staying here.

Quiet, serene, private, quaint are all words to describe the perfect Costa Rican getaway. Banana Azul is the perfect solution to escape the oversized, corporate resorts. There were several options for rooms types. We elected to stay in the Cabina Kinkaju. Even though website cautioned us that it was small, we found it to be the perfect size for the two of us with the right amount of privacy. We enjoyed the beauty of the tropically landscaped grounds and the intimate pool. Everything served at the onsite restaurant was delicious. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention how personable the staff were. In a weeks time they got to know us by name. If you go, seek out "Chowder", he makes the best drinks and was always willing to offer suggestions on what to do and where to go in town to find the party.

Banana Azul is just awesome! The people are so friendly and helpful, the hotel is right at the beach! The food is so delicious and for breakfast there are different options every day! Next to the hotel is an info desk where you can book different tours. I‘m coming back for sure! 😍

We stayed in the Green Frog room which is one of the newer rooms with A/C. The room was exceptional. It was smaller than we expected based on the pictures but we got used to this quickly. No big deal. We loved the dipping pool outside the room. It came in so handy for washing off sand before entering the room or just cooling off. And it was just nice to have the extra space to put shoes, swimsuits, etc. We really liked having the private beach chairs with the huts, wi-fi and food/drink service. The only down side was that the hotel advertises that it is "adult-only" hotel but this only applies to who can stay in the rooms. Children are allowed in the restaurant and at the beach huts as long as someone orders a drink or something to eat. One day, there were three families with a total of 7 small children in the hotel beach area. As long as 1 items is ordered, they can spend the whole day using the beach chairs and beach area. This was not as quiet and peaceful as we had hoped. Honestly, now that we know this, we would probably rent a place close by for a cheaper rate and then use the Banana Azul beach area like other people did. I agree with other reviews that the service is very good here as far as timely and efficient. However, we stayed at 5 other places during our trip to CR and found the customer service to be above and beyond at our other stays. The staff here seemed kind of uncomfortable or a little less skilled in interacting with guests. This goes with the Caribbean vibe and less touristy side of the country but thought it might be good for others to know.

Hola Carey. Sorry, our policy around children in the facility and public areas are confusing. It's a very difficult challenge for us. While the hotel is private property, the beach area and serving areas on the beach are public. To not serve people with children in our food facilities would just generate too much negative energy and cause unnecessary tension and not respect the delicate balance of the beach being a public space. We remain an adult hotel as children are not allowed in the rooms or in pool area. Thanks for your understanding.

The service here was excellent, ask for Zuki at dinner, and for Andres when you need a cocktail on the beach. All staff were friendly and Caribe Fun Tours is also excellent right next door. Heads up that this hotel is a bit removed from the bar scene along Playa Cocles or in 'downtown'. A taxi is easily accessible, if you need. Recommend to anyone looking for a tranquil and peaceful stay along the Playa Negra north of Puerto Viejo.

Thanks for your kind words. I am glad you had a great time. And yes, we are removed (approx 1.5 mile from town centre) from much-fun town scene. However, our front desk staff is happy to arrange a $6 taxi any time you need.

The drive between SJO and Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is 4hrs-6hrs. It is very much worth noting that there are flights from SJO-LIO (Limon is a town about one hour north of the hotel). The property itself is gorgeous; very luscious and green with lots of interesting plant and wildlife. The beach itself is stunning and often empty. Being adults only is a major plus as well! There are several different rooms types available, and each of the descriptions very clearly say whether or not the room has air con. I personally wouldn't have been able to have a room without air con. I stayed in two room types, the first was KINKAJU CABINA which really exceeded expectations. I could hear the ocean from my hammock and the air conditioning worked brilliantly. It is a little further from the restaurant and pool, and was therefore a much quieter room. The second room I stayed in was the TROPICAL BATH STANDARD. It is ground floor and next to reception, so it can be a little noisy during daylight hours. The room itself is stunning, and would be perfect for any romantic getaway. The showerhead of my room (Tropical 9) could do with a clean as the water jets out in all sorts of directions, and the shower temperature is either cold or scalding. But having an outdoor bath and cold air from the air conditioning was wonderful. The breakfast was always outstanding, and the staff were all SO lovely. The excursions offered at the hotel were all quality, and good fun. I had one of the best massages; right on the beach listening to the waves. I absolutely loved this place and cannot wait to go back.

Beautiful serene environment lush well maintained garden and overall facility. Very dedicated staff always eager to please and make you feel truly at home. In particular Jazmin, Andres & Mayhla. Truly exceptional service from all three of them. Their dedication to customer services made our stay so much more enjoyable! Being an animal lover having Brownie( doggie) and Domino(kitty) rosming the property and greeting us at breakfast or on the beach added to the warmth abd inviting atmosphere. Fantastic cocktails and fruit juices! Ceviche is one of the best Ive had! The only hiccup was that our room did not have air conditioning( clearly stated during booking i just didnt catch it) though it did have 2 large fans. Also because of open rooms very prone to mosquitos/bugs. So bring your bug spray! I also have to mention Selva from Caribbean Fun tours who was super helpful arranging our massages, excursions and covid testing! JUST BOOK THIS PLACE! YOU WONT REGRET IT.

Hola. Colin here. Thanks for for forgiving us for no AC in your room. We try and make that clear which ones have it and which ones don't. But I can see how easy it would to overlook this. Our goal is to have AC in all rooms, but larger upgrades are needed t facilitate this. When we built the rooms, having AC was not possible as electric service was not adequate and back then they only built in wood. Nice to hear about Selva in our tour company. She is new. Duly noted. Cheers, Colin.

Great place! Great people, the staff goes above and beyond to help!!Close enough to town to get there easily but far enough away to be quiet. Definitely a perfect place for a family reunion. 50 yards to a quiet beach. Beach bar. Great grounds.

The staff and owners at Banana Azul are professional and friendly and pay attention to so many details. I was a solo traveler on my most recent trip and each day I looked forward to my return to my beautiful comfortable room and to the smiles and friendliness of the staff. I rented a car for a few days and I thought it was worth it to be able to independently explore from Cahuita to Manzanilla. So many wonderful places to see and things to do. I went during rainy season, which was perfect for me. I loved listening to the sounds of the rainforest in the rain, and the overcast beach was perfect for me. My one piece of advice for another traveller is don't neglect to use the bug spray when you sit down at the beach. I did, and I've got lots of little sand flea bites to show for it.

Hola Robin. Thanks for your fabulous review. Sorry to hear abut sand fleas. Certain times of the year they are active. I still can not figure out these times or conditions that make them active. I only know they are there when customers say something. Me... I think my body has built up an immunity, because I never feel them. I hope we can host you again. Cheers, Colin.
