A great choice.  As others have noted you just can’t beat the location of this place..a very easy walk to town/ several restaurants but out of the center of town.  The room we had was cute, comfortable and spacious, and everything was in good working order.  Large covered porch with a hammock was great. (All units have this.)  This hotel occupies two sides of the main road in town. Units on the ocean side are more private with bigger porches...worth the extra money if you can afford it.  They really don’t have an ocean view because the jungle has been left in its natural state which we thought was great. You can hear the waves at night which is lovely. Many birds right on the property. Service was fine and they did a small load of laundry for us for $5.  The breakfast (not included) was okay but we preferred the wonderful bakery just a two minute walk up the street.

The Hotel has two parts. The reception and rows of bungalows are on the right side of the road when coming from Puerto Viejo center. The road is VERY noisy and hence my recommendation is to ask for a bungalow beyond the reception and close to the pool. We stayed in a "sea view bungalow" on the opposite side of the road. You do not sea, but hear the sea as the bungalows are separated from the sea by a 50m stretch of mature trees and bushes. Large clean rooms, veranda with hammock with view on the garden, lawns and trees. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and monkeys (howler and spider) provide entertainment. One great advantage here is the footpath 10m from the sea that gets you into town (10min), the excellent bakery (5min) or to the cockles beach (20 min). So much nicer than walking beside the heavy traffic on the road. The downside of the "sea view bungalow" is the road and its traffic noise just 20m away.

This Hotel has the most STUNNING gardens and grounds! Each “bungalow” has a patio with a hammock to better enjoy the lush, tropical greenery.
There is a gorgeous pool area and a restaurant with truly delicious food!
The rooms themselves are very basic, the bed was quite hard and there was no hot water the first night we stayed. It came back temporarily the next morning but it still wasn’t fantastic.

The hotel, garden and pool are super nice and super clean. The breakfast is also really good. My room wasn’t so clean at first but after I told them they cleaned it again and everything was perfectly fine. The owner of the hotel is super helpful and very welcoming. You should defined stay here! Also the Location is amazing you are very close to the center and also very close to the beach but still have privacy.

Escape Carribeno

Escape Caribeno is a delightfulsurprise, full of lush gardens, a lovely swimming pool, and spacious rooms. It’s mere steps away from the beach and ten minutes walking distance from the lively town of Puerto Viejo. We loved our stay there. The reception team was marvelous and answered all our questions.

I stayed at the Hotel Escape Caribeno for two days in early June. I was greeted by the owner Mauro and escorted to my room. Mauro gave me a quick tour of the bungalow, gave me the keys and was gone. He is a nice guy and will answer any questions but will basically leave you alone unless you need him. hint: ask about paying with cash.

Instead of a hotel it is a number of bungalows. The bungalows are located on both sides of the main road just south of Puerto Viejo. The property on both sides of the road is enclosed by locked gates and fences which are often covered by foliage.

I stayed in bungalow 15. It is actually half of a duplex. I didn't notice any noise from the neighbors. There is however some noise from the road. Likely not unusual in other places in this area built along the main road. The fan or A/C noise will help somewhat in this regard.

My bungalow was beautiful (as hopefully you can see in the pictures). Tile floors and lots of wood. I opted for A/C. The A/C worked well but had to be turned back on after the short power failures that occur a few times a day. My room had no TV or phone but did have a well stocked mini bar. BTW I noted a TV antenna and satellite dish on a couple of the bungalows across the road. So perhaps more amenities are available at some bungalows????

The eastern part of the property is a couple of hundred meters from the ocean. I think this is a requirement in this area. The beach is not a good swimming area as there is coral near the shore all along this area. But if you want a deserted beach this is the place. The beaches for swimming are located a couple of km to the south.

I found this a great place to stay for easy access to PV while not actually being in town. You do have to trek a bit to get to swimming beaches. There are street lights along the road from PV and I felt comfortable walking at night. Note: there is no free breakfast. I would recommend the Hotel Escape Caribeno and would stay here again.

You stay in quaint but modern individual cottages. Rooms are generously sized with ample sized bathrooms. Rooms are equipped with AC, dorm-sized frig, a small security safe and TV. Beds are comfortable with insect tents that we didn’t need. The extensive gardens on the property are gorgeous. A choice of nice breakfasts are available. Recommended!

There are several American companies that fly to San Jose, the airport of Limon is not international but provides only local flights. From San Jose to Puerto Viejo you can use public transport with a modest cost, or you can use the , or rent a car at the airport, or take a taxi, cost obviously the most high.
