Excellent place , We saw a lot of amazing animals , the nature is incredible and we stayed in a tipi, nice room , quiet place , perfect to recharge . The only thing was the humidity , the sheets felt humid , for the rest everything was very good . The staff is kind and helpful . I regret no stay one more night there , it was our preferred place “puerto viejo de Talamanca” in Costa Rica.

Shawandha Review I will start by saying that I travel a lot, both for work and leisure, but I very rarely take the time to write reviews. That said, I feel the need to review the Shawandha Lodge both to give them accolades for our wonderful stay there and to provide another viewpoint for those who may be considering a stay but are questioning it after reading a couple of recent reviews that were absolutely scathing—which frankly, my family and I just can’t comprehend. We arrived at Shawandha very late at night after a long day of flying and a very long shuttle from San Jose. Upon our arrival, we were given a warm welcome and a cold drink from the bar. Genesis made us feel totally welcome, walked us to our cabin and showed us around. It was absolutely beautiful…. But it’s important to remember that it is in the RAINFOREST. There is no AC or TV, which was clearly stated everywhere we did research for the trip. There are huge (and beautiful) golden orb spiders in their webs in rafters along pathways. The howler monkeys WILL wake you up at 4am. The sounds of the jungle are everywhere, and the animal sitings are frequent. The beach is a short walk away, and it is incredibly beautiful, as the jungle ends directly at the sea. It is not a white sand beach with fancy drink service and umbrellas, it is rugged, full of coral rock and tidal pools, and the water has some strong rip currents—but again, it is awesome. The bar and restaurant service was great, and Lenin and Fabian were wonderful and kind hosts who always went out of their way to help with a drink, an afternoon snack or a candlelight dinner. The breakfast every morning was very good, and the fresh fruit was amazing. Overall, the Shawandha provided an amazing experience for our family. The ladies at the front desk helped us to schedule some great excursions and to rent bikes to explore the area. The hotel was a great starting point to access Cahuita, Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. The pool and beach access were perfect for our family. Ultimately, we got the full South Caribbean Costa Rica experience, with its laid-back, diverse, eco-friendly vibe set to a calypso soundtrack—and we owe so much of that to the Shawandha eco-lodge. If you want 5 star luxury, air conditioning and a white glove treatment, go to a big name hotel on the Pacific coast or in Turks and Caicos. If you want a family friendly, nature-loving rainforest experience on the Caribbean coast, we highly recommend this hotel.

Oh boy where to begin? This was our 3rd and final visit to this s@@t hole. It used to be quaint, neat, well run and unique. Now it's a run like a rooming house and is sub par in all amenities, and especially the food and coffee. One would think that in Costa Rica the coffee should be great...not here...the morning coffee is worse than poor American motel /diner coffee. Shameful...what's even more shameful is that the have the gaul to charge $8 for a double cappuccino made from a machine with pods. A total rip off. Food...atrocious. The restaurant is managed by an ex-con from Italy named Alfredino. The worst part is that Alfy, is that he bunks in with his 2 room mates in cabin 4 among the guests, and wakes us all up at 6:30 am coughing his lungs out with his emphysema from smoking all day long. The staff have no regard for sleeping guests and loudly go about their day early in the am when preparing for the day. Very disturbing, you can't sleep. You don't want this clown(Alfredino) to to touch your plate. So gross. Speaking of gross the buffet in the mornings is appalling. Eggs are like rubber, fruit is limp, meat is like prison food (not that I know from experience) The small cakes and baked goods are left uncovered on the bar and they were infested with bugs. When I reached for a brownie, and who even wants a brownie at breakfast, hundred of flies, gnats and roaches scrambles away. The whole place is a dump. The towels, if they have them for the beach or pool, at the front desk are all torn and used...sad. The front desk staff work hard at accommodating the guests. they are doing their best. But besides that, this place is a 1/10 avoid it like the plague. So much more i can report but just don't want to waste my energy.

My husband and I stayed here while celebrating our 10yr wedding anniversary and our stay was amazing. We stayed in one of the new bungalows that surround the long rectangle pool and it was exactly the experience we were looking for. There is no A/C, we anticipated that based off the info provided on their website, but there are screens plus a good ceiling fan. And it does cools down pretty well at night for a comfortable nights sleep. The staff was very friendly and patient with us. We aren’t very fluent in Spanish, but there is some staff that speaks some English so we were all able to communicate with the little that we each knew. They helped us set up a snorkel tour at Cahuita National Park (which was amazing!), and set up our taxi to & from the small airport in Limón. There are a few restaurants within walking distance, we can speak for the 2 pizza joints near by and highly recommend those as well. Be prepared to be woken by howler monkeys as it’s part of the Costa Rican experience. They have a couple clean & filtered water filter stations along the paths between bungalows, and the beach that’s across from the hotel is beautiful! Be sure to check high & low tide schedule before getting into the ocean. It’s extra choppy during high tide due to the amazing coral reefs. We’d definitely recommend this place for those looking for eco friendly lodging.

Read it to the end! My husband and I decided to come visit Puerto Viejo for the first time. We wanted to know this beautiful place. In the town everything is super nice, the people mostly super friendly and attentive we did activities before check in and everything was perfect until we got to the hotel ...... at check in the girl was very friendly however, the rooms THEY DO NOT HAVE A / C and that is not the main problem, the main problem was the manager or manager, I don't know, Maylin Obando totally arrogant and unserviceable, we tried to speak up and explain that for the price that was paid (which was not nothing cheap) we thought that the rooms had the basics such as A / C, screen ... incredibly they do not have either of the two things and yet they dare to charge so much ...... the rooms are nice, they are Kind of tiny cabins, but it is not a fair price to charge, it is not worth it. Anyway, we spoke with her very kindly requesting the refund of the money to be able to find another place with A / C and she totally refused, also for two reasons after refusing, we requested an upgrade first because we had two reservations in different types of rooms, at The next day we had activities, and they did not make it easy for us to move our luggage from one to the other and the second reason because there were roach legs and gecko poop on the bed, she told us in a not very friendly way, that the upgrade She gave it by paying the difference and in addition to that she would charge us for the use of the room since we had used it, when we ourselves told the receptionist that we did not want to dirty the room and she was the one who told us not to worry about using it. It is ugly, it is tedious to have to stay by force for two more days in a place where you know that you are branded as a complicated guest, when we kindly tried to request understanding so that we would all be well and happy, and it was rejected in an even pedantic way and grotesque. So folks, if you are going to take the risk of going to this place, make sure that everything is perfect and that you are never going to agree to a proposal from a guest. Would I return to this place? Yes, if I would return when they put A / C so that the prices are fair and also that they change the manager / manager.

We had booked a room here for a couple nights as part of our honeymoon. We took a taxi from Cahuita and got within a few minutes of the hotel when we hit traffic because a power pole had fallen down in the middle of the road. At 1:30pm we talked to the people working on the power pole and they said they were not letting anyone through and hoped to be done by 5pm. At 5pm the road still was not open and it was getting dark and we were tired of sitting at a nearby outdoor bar with all of our luggage in the humid heat. We called Shawandha and talked to an employee about cancelling our reservation and getting a full refund since we were not able to get to hotel due to the road closure. She said she completely understood our situation since we couldn't get there and she would talk to her manager to have the refund processed. When we left to go back to our previous hotel at 6pm the road was still closed and they were not letting anyone through. The next day, I went back and forth with Shawandha staff on WhatsApp and they refused to give us a refund and lied, claiming that all of the other people that were supposed to arrive that night made it and that all day they were letting people through the construction. I know they were lying because we had 4 friends who were supposed to stay there that night and after waiting 4 hours in traffic by the power pole their shuttle driver had to take them to a different hotel in Puerto Viejo. I mentioned this to them and they completely ignored it when they replied. Also, I talked to many locals and asked people driving by while we were waiting at the bar nearby and each time they said the road was still closed and they were not letting anyone through. They kept trying to say their policy doesn't allow them to refund us which I explained to them their policy is irrelevant when customers can't get to the hotel because of a fallen power pole. Shawandha was completely ridiculous, dishonest, and not understanding at all of the fact that it was impossible to get to their hotel. I ended up having to dispute the transaction on my credit card and luckily was able to get the charges completely reversed. The WORST customer service I have ever experienced in the 19 countries I have traveled to. Their lack of flexibility and common sense was truly astounding and embarrassing on their part as they try to rebuild tourism in the area. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone!

Lack of security which resulted on 2am parties from other rooms. Hotel claimed security is outsourced therefore not within their control, moreover “their so called solution” was offering a 30% discount which is already given to anyone on their website.

After traveling for 10 hours, we were welcomed with open arms by Marvin at Shawandha. He is warm and friendly and extremely knowledgeable about Puerto Viejo, the history and culture of Costa Rica. Speak with him about booking any tours in the area, he has great references. We enjoyed homemade breakfast every morning in the midst of the jungle before we ventured out on our bicycles the Shawandha rented us for the day. The service from the dining room and housekeeping was outstanding, we were treated like family. Make sure to have a conversation with any of the employees. Caleb, Maria and Roberto made it feel like home, and are all well versed in the surroundings. Our bungalow was authentic, clean and spacious. The bathroom is covered in beautiful mosaic tile with an open shower concept. The ceiling fan kept the room cool and comfortable at night. Shawanda is located in the heart of the coast, between the town of Puerto Viejo and Punta Uva. It's walking distance from the beach, two homemade Italian pizza locations, all day caribbean restaurants, and our personal favorite, Gypsea Cafe & Lounge. Access to bikes everyday made it possible to travel anywhere we wanted for the day. We would highly recommend Shawandha.

Little bungalows in the ''jungle''. Maybe we were not lucky but the 2 days that we stayed there, there was loud music coming from the restaurant next to the lodge. We could not hear the sound of the jungle so it was a bit disapointing. The bungalows are cute but a bit outdated and not that clean. We had so much bugs after each of our shower that we took. I get that it is in the jungle but for the price that we pay this is not cool. The breakfast could offer other options and the restaurant is terrible. So, a nice lodge really nicely located, but that has lost a bit of sense and could be renovated to maximize it.

I only ate in the dining room for dinner, so nothing to say about the hotel. The food wasn’t what it should have been for the price. The staff was very nice and service was good. It felt to much like a resort instead of a restaurant. It was a cool looking place but not what I prefer.
