The hostel is located in a dead end street in the outskirts of Puerto Viejo. First night, we were awaken by loud bangs we couldn’t identify. Second evening, around 20:00, people outside the hostel started to throw fist-size stones against the property for 1 hour when there were none of the staff in. After that, around midnight, we were again waken up by bangs which were now clear gun shots fired in the street of the hostel. The shooting lasted for more than 1 hour. We complained to the hostel staff but they mentioned this was ‘normal’, and refuse to refund the remaining nights we booked because the gun shots ‘did not take place inside the hostel premises’ I must say in 3 weeks in Costa Rica this was the only bad experience I had. The cabins are decent for the value but not worth the risk, there are safe places for similar cost in cahuita area.…
