Just returned from another holiday in Cahuita. We have been travelling here for the last 6 years for a month each time and love it. Yes it can rain a lot, yes the beach (black) can be covered in debris but the mix of people, the surfing, the food and the unique experience more than make up for it.

This year stayed at the Cabinas Iguana and yes there was a real Iguana in the hedge by the wooden 2 bed house we rented. In the garden viewed from the luxury of the hammock I also saw a sloth with baby, hummingbirds, guisuti (something like that - little pig things) lizards, bats, numerous birds - amazing. Iguana has a small but very nice pool apparently an iguana has been known to jump in and there was a toad whilst we were there! Owners are Martin who is Swiss origin and Sofia who is Costa Rican they have 2 charming children and help from Martha and Ricardo.

If you are looking for somewhere to stay outside of the main town then stay here or at Cabinasa Mambo/Jardin Tropicale run by Arleen who will take you dancing if you're lucky!

We did our yearly family trip and enjoyed this place. It was hard to find from the bus station since we did not know where we were going, lol. The owner was informed and came to our rescue! I went with my wife, 4 kids ages 15, 10, 9, 1 and my mom. We loved the cabina that we stayed in. I believe it was Cabina #1. It was a spacious 3 bed room cabina with a private bathroom and kitchen. There was 2 rooms with a full size bed, one room with two twin beds. It had fans, tv and mosquito netting. The location was only about 1km from bus station, but we took the 3km long way, lol. The reggae bar is around the corner and the stores, etc are about a 10 minute walk. The Cabinas are about 2 minutes away from an awesome beach in front of the reggae bar. The Cabinas have excellent free morning coffee and an awesome pool! There are also bread, pizza and various vendors that come and sell you food items which is nice. The owner and his wife were super cool and would even drive you to the store if you did not want to walk. The staff is also great. The maintenance guy, Fernando was super cool and offered help with anything you may need. I will definitely go back and highly recommend the place!!!

PS just FYI, the places in Cahuita are more relaxed and chill. Do not expect a lot of cars, or people, which is cool! If you are looking for a busier atmosphere you should go to Puerto Viejo. We went there and did not like it, it is dirty and wayyyy too busy! Cahuita is more of a jungle retreat where you are surrounded by nature and great people! Great getaway for a family!

I didn't know much about Cahuita but took a chance and booked Cabinas Iguana for a 2 night stay. I wasn't disappointed. It's located in a secluded yet convenient part of Black Beach so we felt very safe. The owners are extremely kind and attentive. Go next door to Brigitte's for breakfast or horseback riding. The Reggae Bar one block away on the beach is good or lunch or dinner with an amazing view. If you desire more choices town center is an easy 1 KM walk where stores and restaurants are. Also the National Park is next to town. The owner (la duena) was happy to practice Spanish with me. The cabinas have a fan and thats sufficient for keeping comfortable. The rain on the metal roof is guaranteed great sleeping. Theres a nice pool. Agoutis and many birds inhabit the grounds. I easily recommend these cabins.

This was probably the best place we stayed in over 2 months of travelling in Costa Rica, Nicaragua , Honduras and Guatemala. These are true "cabinas", comfortable and well spaced out in a beautiful "jungle" woodland setting, yet close to the Playa Negra beach and only a short cycle ride from the centre of Cahuita and the National Park. Swimming pool on site is decent size.

Lively "Reggae" bar down the road but too far away to disturb you in your cabina. You may, however, be disturbed by howler monkeys early in the morning! Lots of other wildlife on the doorstep.

Fridge in room (very useful) and coffee available in reception from about 7 a.m.

Free transfer to and from bus station for bus to St Jose ($9 -- don't waste your money on the expensive minibus transfer service.)

Room price really is very good value.

We really enjoyed our one night at Cabinas Iguana. Most of the budget guest houses we stay at have concrete walls, so it was a real pleasure staying somewhere with fragrant dark wood paneling, built in shelves, and a mosquito net.

Our shared bathroom was reasonably clean, as was the shower. There is a BEAUTIFUL clean pool and an extensive book swap.

It is located about a 15 minute walk from the town center, so know ahead of time that you shouldn't walk after dark to town. There is a reggae bar/restaurant which is a little pricey very close by. (safe to walk to) (remember, pricey for us is $10 entrees--if you're "on vacation" and budgeting isn't an issue for you then it's not too bad.) The food is good though.

You can also rent a cabina with a kitchen and cook yourself.

Or you can just plan on getting a taxi back from town after dark.

Either way, the slight separation from town means a much quieter, peaceful, isolated experience. Fantastic for reading a book in a hammock, sitting by the pool, and enjoying Playa Negra, which is just moments away.

A quiet retreat for independent travelors, but only 3 blocks from the beach and a half a mile from the center of Cahuita. The owners were generous, friendly and excellent managers for this lovely group of cabins in a tropical garden.

We had a fantastic stay here.

Immediately we were greeted by two keel billed toucans, straight outside our bungalows. We saw a tonne of poison dart frogs, and some olive backed euphonias had nested and fledged on our patio. We saw an armadillo at night and there are tonnes of adorable agoutis.

The accommodation was comfortable, clean and quiet which was all we needed! It was really cheap for what it was. Excellent value.

Lovely pool (pool furniture a little worse for wear but stick a towel on it and hey presto).

Cahuita is about 0.7 miles walk, or if you ask nicely you can borrow bikes (no charge).

On the way there is a restaurant called sobar los olas (or something similar) forgive my spelling. The food is fantastic. The mixed seafood rocked my world.

There's also a pizza place nearby that I'd recommend.

There's a market down the road and two other bars which are good enough. The market is terrible.

We stayed here for two nights in October 2014. The cabinas are clean and comfortable but without air conditioning. There was a fan in our cabin that provided some relief but with night time temperatures in the the high 70s and humidity in the 80 percent range, it was warm.

The pool was awesome, very clean and beautiful settings. There is no restaurant on the premises, but two houses down the road is a wonderful breakfast place, Bridget's, that serves great coffee, eggs, and wonderful banana pancakes. Dinner places are plentiful within a short walk.

I stayed here for 4 days with my partner and daughter and we all wished that we had booked to stay longer. The hotel is a bit of a walk from the centre where most of the restaurants are, but that makes it really tranquil and great for wildlife spotting. If you walk past the last cabin it feels as though you are in the jungle. Even when I was just relaxing on the hammock on the verandah I saw toucans, lizards, tree frogs, humming birds and agouti. The pool is a decent size and very clean -our daughter spent hours swimming around and playing with the new friends that she made. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. A special mention must be made of Chris who has a wealth of knowledge about Costa Rican wildlife. We went on a guided walk in Cahuita National Park with him, and it was brilliant. A few times, other tourists passed us with guides who were

striding along, looking as though they were just intent on getting from A to B. Chris, on the other
hand, really took his time which meant that he was able to spot so many creatures from tiny hermit
crabs to monkeys to coati. He could tells loads about the animals that we were watching, and also
explained about the plants that we saw. Staying at Cabinas Iguanas and going on the guided walk with Chris have been 2 of the highlights of our time in Costa Rica.

Cabinas Iguana are situated a 15 minutes walk away from Cahuitas "center" in a very quiet (except for some howler monkeys...) neighbourhood. The cabinas and the centrally placed pool look as if they were built into the jungle. From the doorstep of your cabina you can see (if you keep your eyes open and are a bit lucky) poison-dart frogs, agoutis, iguanas, striped basiliscs, sloths, howler monkeys, just to name a few. Staff and owners are very helpful and easy-going. We stayed two times already (2010 and 2012) and will be happy if ever we'll be able to stay at Cabinas Iguana a third time. A good place for nature lovers who still want to relax a bit during their vacation, not exactly a place for people who get the shudders with every toad or lizard they see ;-)

"There are only a few cabinas here and they are very popular so you'll probably have to take what's available, but they're all good value. Only the largest has cooking facilities. Most of the others are similar to the one we stayed in, except for three cheaper rooms together with shared bathroom."
