Anyone who thinks this is a luxury hotel, super nice, tidy and close to ings animals, should not stay here.
But for those who like to be close to animals and do not care so much that there is wildlife right on the knot, this is a hotel to choose.
Perfect for everything. Very helpful owners and friendly.
Can warmly recommend this place and around the corner there is a wonderful restaurant (Bananas) where you can have lunch, dinner and breakfast.

I have nothing to complain about, but did not expect a luxury hotel either. Definitely worth staying.
However, they no longer serve breakfast, but there is everything you need close by.

We stayed at our favorite location the Magellan Hotel. As always the Hotel was a wonderful relaxing experiance. The employees were welcoming and helpful. We had not visited in December before and were delighted to see even more birds. We will be back.

We stayed at Magellan Hotel and loved every moment. Had we not made other plans to travel to the other side of Costa Rica we would have stayed longer. So much to explore and do at Puerto Limon. There was a group of six of us total. The owner and her son were so hospitable.

The owner of the place ignored us and we felt unwelcomed and unconfortable. There were too many rules, like in a boot camp. When we expressed our concerns about the service, there was no apology. Instead we received a very defensive attitude, something you don't expect in the service industry. We paid for two nights but we left after the first one. No refund, no sorry, nothing. Stay away from this place if you are looking for a good time, unless you like...

As owner and manager of the Hotel Magellan Inn, I would like to answer and convey my feelings on this man's unhappy visit. I am very sorry that he found us so unfriendly. I was the person that he had direct contact with on his arrival and with his discontents. It was high season, the hotel full, but it was raining and it was he that wanted to leave because of the rain. I explained to him that he had made a confirmed reservation several months ago and that our cancellation policy in high season was nonrefundable 0-3 days before. This made him very angry. That is our cancellation policy as is most hotels in Costa Rica. Other clients who over heard the situation and his remarks, said I had handled the situation very well, that I was very nice and polite. We are a small hotel with 12 years of experience and with high recommendations in the Guide Books,it is not my desire to make my clients unhappy but for them to enjoy their time, we give a very personal contact to everyone who stays here. I do apologise if in anyway he found me to be unpolite. It is nor in my desire or interests as owner. Terry Newton

This was our first horseback riding vacation and it exceeded all our expectations! We enjoyed the accommodations--just six guest rooms, and the gourmet food. We loved the fact that every day was planned for us, from riding on the beach and jungle, to snorkeling, to hiking with a guide in the national park, to a visit to the sloth sanctuary. We especially enjoyed our gracious host, Terry, who made everything thoroughly enjoyable.

During our 4-week July '06 trek around Costa Rica, we planned to spend some time on the Caribbean coast. We decided to pass on Limon as it just seemed a busy, dirty port city. We found ourselves at the Magellan Hotel in Cahuita & were pleasantly surprised.

Located just outside the sleepy town of Cahuita, Magellan has comfortable rooms surrounding a beautiful garden courtyard with swimming pool. (If you are looking for a true beachfront hotel, there are other options right at the National Park entrance in town).

Our Magellan room offered carpet, 2 dbl beds, ceiling fan, tiled bathroom & french doors leading to the patio facing the lovely courtyard. At first the room seemed too warm without A/C, but it turned out just fine. It was nice to be off of the beach & not have everything covered with sand.

Magellan serves a simple breakfast of fresh fruit, toast, coffee & juice. For dinner, I recommend the Bananas Restaurant located to the left at the corner -- it feels like eating in a scenic tree house. The German owners, Alfred & Andrea, are great welcoming hosts & create delicious, inexpensive dinners. She is an accomplished artist, be sure to look through her portfolios. Also, if the Magellan is too expensive for your budget, Alfred & Andrea run the adjacent Cabinas Algebra, with clean, attractive rooms starting around $20 USD.

Cahuita National Park has one of the prettiest beaches in Costa Rica. Admission at this town entrance is by donation. Bikes can be rented on the street & is a good way to get back & forth from Magellan and to explore the few Cahuita streets.

Gabby, the Magellan caretaker, was very kind & helpful & even allowed us to store beer & drinks in the hotel refrigerator. Magellan has a lending library and secure parking lot, too. Beautiful macaws are in residence in the reception area & the surrounding trees have plenty of monkeys.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Magellan & Cahuita!

A beautiful and charming hotel. We had a lovely stay of one week in this hotel. The taste and obvious love this hotel was made with, shows in every part of it. There is a definite European touch. The owners are a delighful couple with many interesting adventurous stories to tell. The place is peaceful, elegant, very comfortable and the food is amazing! All in all, we can't say enough and hope to return on our next trip to Costa Rica

our family of 4 had a great two night stay at the end of January. We enjoyed the early morning sightings of agoutis, a huge iguana in a tree, and a sloth and her baby. Everyone there was welcoming and they brought out pancakes for my son who was celebrating his birthday. We were comfortable with the four of us in one room. Continental breakfast was nice and the covered patio was a very pleasant place to eat. We look forward to coming back.

We stayed at the Magellan for two nights in Febuary. For the Cahuita area, I think that the hotel is a quite a good choice for the price. Rooms are OK , beds are comfortable, there was AC in our room (rare in that area) and the pool was refreshing. The caribean are is quite humid, so the AC helped to clear the humidity in the room. Gardens are very nice, lots of tropical trees and flowers... By the way, we saw more wildlife while at the hotel than in the nearby National Park.. Lots of birds, toucans and agoutis from our balcony... Finally, breakfast was good, and we got good answers and advice on the area at the desk when we asked for...

We rented a car but it is a long drive. Check with Magellan, I believe their is a small airport that you can fly from San Jose to it and be fairly close to Cahuita! I was wishing we had done that!
