I stayed here 8 years ago. Back then it was a very nice, rather small lodge with cabins scattered over a hill. The food was good and they had bird feeders all along the restaurant balconies and each meal was a delight, seeing the colorful birds. 8 years later they have become a mastodont lodge. No more feeders - the charm is gone. Yes, it's a beautiful place and the cabins are awesome. But the charm of the quiet lodge is gone, as are the birds. I checked out very early in the morning. The packed breakfast was crap. They could have done WAY better than that without any effort whatsoever. And then there was the constant nagging about the key. I checked out at 4AM and left the key on the door. Later on they kept messaging the key was missing. This kind of spoiled the mood.…
Set amongst lush green vegetation and a frog garden, the setting was perfect. Our room was a little dark because the windows are high. Nice veranda with two chairs looking out to the forest. Had a coffee maker but not coffee, milk or sugar. Had to keep asking. Food was reasonable and staff friendly. Room cleaned daily and the loo paper bin emptied each day which was a bonus. Visit the Selva Biological Station whilst you are there. It is well worth the visit.
An ecologically sensitive retreat in the Costa Rican jungle, emphasizing resource conservation and preservation. Spacious comfortable bungalows nestled in the rain forest with ceiling to floor window into the jungle. Shiny tile floors in common space and private rooms. Good food, caring staff, and charming pool. It also provided a great launch pad to white water rafting.
By far the best part of my stay was being greeted by Sir David Attenborough who was doing his morning constitutional while I was trying to photograph birds just outside the hotel. Rooms are pleasant with an outside sitting area next to lush vegetation. Did not find any English language TV channels which was a minus.. Their food was OK but not spectacular with one dish doing me in for 48 hours of not being able to eat much. Their Margarita cocktail though was excellent.
We stayed at Ara Ambigua for two nights and will definitely go back. It is located just outside Puerto Viejo, Sarapiqui. The lodge itself has two pools, which are refreshingly cool. There is also a lovely nature walk through the jungle gardens. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast. Both meals were great, typico Costa Rican. The birds, bats and monkeys in the surrounding jungle made this extra special. They also have a special area just outside the open dining area, where you can do some bird watching. We saw several toucans, a variety of hummingbirds and lots of other bright, beautiful birds while enjoying our dinner.
