In prior years we had stayed near the other end of the beach but decided to try this location for a few dollars more, and now wouldn't go back to our former abode for a few reasons. First off, all the staff here were personable and friendly, from the reception to the restaurant/bar staff and so on; always what seemed like genuine warm interaction, remembering your name, room # and drink choice right off the bat! Our room was quiet, as per fridge, aircon etc. When we got neighbours (with loud family) there was bleed-through noise from the hall and walls, but all in all slept well. The room was very nice and my only bother was the overlarge pillows, something that seems trendy these days, but my neck can't take it. Would be nice if a large and a small were offered. The layout was…
This is a very clean and customer friendly hotel and restaurant. The beach is beautiful black sand and the sunsets are breathtaking. The restaurant is good. Nothing over the top, but decent prices. If you stay there, please also try the other restaurants along the beach. Genaro was always so welcoming, friendly and provides top notch service breakfast through lunch. If you can choose your room, I would advise you to stay away from the back of the building. There is an open metal staircase and when it is being used, it sounds like a herd of elephants are stampeding through your room. We were in 206. Granted, there were kids running up and down during our stay. Also be prepared for very firm beds. I had to pile pillows on the mattress so I could rest without back pain. …
I really liked this hotel! It was our first stop on our trip to Costa Rica. The staff was friendly and the room had air conditioning. The room was clean and the showers were nice. The best part was that their restaurant was right on the beach and the grilled red snapper was delicious. The breakfast was ok too.
Perfect boutique hotel on the beach. Mike the owner is always available on site to deal with any issues. But quite honestly we have never experienced issues at this hotel. Rooms are clean. Hot water for showers. The rooms now have refrigerator µwave . Which is a huge plus for us. Pool is great. We don’t use the pool since the beach is right in front of you. It is a swimming beach. Meaning calm water. The restaurant has specials and now live entertainment. The food is excellent. Great variety. The staff are all very friendly. We stay at this hotel every time we visit Costa Rica. I would highly recommend you give this hotel a try.
I've stayed at El Velero many times over the past twenty years. The current owner, Mike, has got to be one of the kindest, most astute hotel owners out there. I'm not kidding. I've traveled the world, and this guy is one of the best. He is not only kind and helpful to clients, he's also kind and thoughful about his staff, evident by how many years his staff stay and work for him when there are many other hotels and resorts in the area from which they could choose. El Velero isn't the Four Seasons, but if you are looking for a relaxing spot right on the beach that is an excellent value, this is it. But please don't tell anyone. I thought long and hard about NOT writing my review because I want to always be able to get a room at El Velero whenever I'm in Costa Rica. Pura vida!
We have stayed at El Velero twice and have reservations there for April and June, 2022. I give it FIVE STARS in the context of what it is. If I were reviewing it compared to a luxury resort it would not get that rating. It is definitely not in that category. But if you love cool, hip, fun, laid back, on the beach, super clean, great food, fun staff, excellent food and an engaged owner...........then yes, this is a Five Star Resort. It is simple and has a following of return guests like I have never seen....sort of like family. It is literally on the beach with the water about 75 yards from the bar. We love it. Stuart B. We just returned from a 1 week stay and we had the most wonderful experience at this hotel. The value for the price is amazing. The hotel is small with about 15 rooms. It has a lovely restaurant and faces the beach. The beach has lovely shade and the water is calm and clear for easy swimming. So even though it was 90 degrees during the day, a chair in the shade with a regular calm breeze was always very comfortable. The hotel staff are what make this place even more special. Josue , Luis and Genaro were so friendly and gave us great service at the restaurant, learning our names and helping us practice ordering in Spanish. The housekeeper Jenny was so friendly and did a wonderful job each day cleaning our rooms. The owner Mike seems like a really great guy. The front desk staff…
My wife and I just spent 3 wonderful weeks at the ElVelero in Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica. It’s a 22 room hotel and restaurant. You can sit in the outdoor seating in the restaurant, only 100’ from the shore of Hermosa Bay of the Pacific Ocean, and watch the sea birds and occasional dolphins play in the water. The restaurant serves some of the best food in the area! The staff are super friendly and professional. We highly recommend this jewel of a place. They can also hook you up with lots of fun tours in the area. Kevin & Terri from Michigan
This is our second time at El Velero and we ended up with the same room (205) since we asked for a king size bed. We were there about 3 years ago and they have renovated the bathrooms and did a nice job. They also added a fence they close at night along the beach so the parking lot is secure, not that there were any problems. Staff was still the same and helpful. The food is pretty good but nothing fancy. They have a Bar B Que on Wednesday nights. We went down to eat and there were no tables so reserve one if you want to eat there that night. Still a quite, beautiful beach which we really enjoyed. Even the WiFi was better. My wife had 2 messages on the beach and we went to a drum event on the beach raising money for a monkey organization. Very cool. I love this place to relax…
We were on a trip with our son and daughter in law and they left to go home so we decided to go up to Hermosa for few days. What a great place. The staff is 2nd to none. They treat you like a friend from the start. The food is beyond good. The grill night was excellent. And then you have the beach! Beautiful little cove. My wife and I walked it every morning. Plus the sunset is one of the best you can find. To top it off they had live music 2 nights while we were there. I can't say enough about this little hotel. A true gem. Amazing!!
