Detailed Reviews
I recently spent a week in Playas del coco, at Cabinas Coco Azul. Since I was somewhat limited on cash, I wasn't sure I would find a very nice place to stay, as well as have money left to go on side trips. Much to my surprise, Cabinas Coco Azul was great. Ray, the manager, was a wonderful host, and he really made me feel welcome and safe. Travelling alone can be scary. Ray made me feel at home. Arenal volcano was awesome. My friend and I made all of our arrangements thru Ray and one of his permanent tenants, who just happened to be tour guides. My trip was great, and I am grateful to Ray for his patience and kindness.

My boyfriend and I were travelling through Costa Rica this past November (2007) and we consider ourselves lucky to have stumbled upon Cabinas Coco Azul.
Although Cabinas Coco Azul is a bit off the main strip, it's worth the short walk. It's definitely clean and suprisingly cheap!
AND it's run by Ray.
And as I always say... people make the place.
Ray, the manager, is a very friendly fellow with plenty of wild stories to entertain anyone for hours. He's also very willing to offer advice, pull out a local map, help out with car rentals or even lend his own frying pan to a traveller in need.
He runs the place like a mother kitten... always looking out for his 'little ones'. He makes the place feel warm like home and may.... just MAY even offer to do your laundry!
Thanks for everything RAY!

We spent 5 weeks in an upstairs cabina, and we loved it! If you'd rather be surrounded by howler monkeys than by American/Canadian tourists, this is the place for you. Some of my fondest memories of Costa Rica involve hanging out on the porch of our cabina and watching howler monkey families in the manga trees nearby. So amazing! During our stay, we met both Costa Rican and international tourists who stayed at the cabinas. Coco Azul is located a couple of blocks from the beach and a couple of blocks from the main strip. It's closer to Playa Blanca (the nicest beach on the southside of Coco, in our opinion) than most of the other condos or cabinas. We found the location to be perfect, and we walked everywhere. There's a 24-7 convenient store less than a block away, and the grocery store's not too far of a hike.
This was the cheapest place within walking distance of the beach that we could find in Coco, and we did a lot of searching! It is a great deal. Of course, the cabinas are not the Ritz, but we definitely got our money's worth. The cabinas are clean and have character. Water (even hot water), cable, internet, and electricity are included in the rates. The internet isn't always working, but when it's down, it's down all over Coco. Our bedroom had a window AC unit that we used at night to cool the room. Steve, the owner, is a friendly guy and will go out of his way to help you enjoy your stay in Coco. He'll also give you advice about how to make the most out of your stay without breaking the bank. He's from the US and may or may not be around during your stay, but his manager, Eric, is quite capable of running the place in Steve's absence. Eric was a great help and is a great serenader, too.

Unfortunately the room we stayed in had very little ventilation, a noisy fan and a squadron of mosquitoes waiting outside the door to attack you. Manager you later got dismissed wa complacent and dis-interested. Apart from that it was great...
Diving in the area is very good.

You've got to stay at Coco Azul if visiting Playas del Coco. The manager, Ray, was wonderful...very attentive, warm, and friendly. This was truly one of the highlights of our 6 week journey through Costa Rica. The room was spacious, clean and very, very reasonably priced. We looked all over town before finding this gem! There are a variety of rooms available to meet your budget needs, but no matter what you choose, you will feel right at home. Just have a chat with Ray to determine which room is best for you! I really can't say enough good things about these cabinas located behind the church, very close to the beach. Though you may be persuaded to try other cabinas in town, none of the cabinas in this price range even come close to Coco Azul.
We actually sat in our room and had long conversations about how happy and comfortable we were there! Go see for yourself!

We spent three nights at Cabinas Coco Azul and enjoyed it very much. The location is perfect - a couple of minutes from the beach and just as close to the 'main strip' but set in a beautiful, rustic little cul de sac. The surroundings are wonderful, with awesome mango trees inhabited by howler monkeys, and chickens and dogs happily running around creating a real feeling of being amongst the beautiful nature of Costa Rica. The rooms are basic but clean, secure and great value for the money, particularly for Costa Rica. Steve was a wonderful host and bent over backwards to make sure we enjoyed our stay. He took us to a local fisherman to buy cheap seafood and lent us everything we needed to have a BBQ, thanks Steve! One point to note about Playa Coco is that there are many free wifi points but only one expensive internet cafe so bring your own devices if you can. Security is not an issue in Cabana Coco Azul. All in all, we cannot fault this great little find!

Considering the soaring prices at other spots in Playa del Coco, finding Ray and his cabinas was a welcome relief. He was personable on the phone and during our stay, even going so far as to meet us upon arrival and provide us with cards and dominoes to make our stay more pleasant. We would definitely recommend his accommodation to any travellers seeking affordable, pleasant lodgings.

So, I did not stay here, because even though I had a confirmed reservation, it is closed for the winter. Why was I not told this?
It was actually a blessing in disguise because this place is very sketchy. It is not "steps to the beach," but a couple of blocks. There is no place to sit outside (hammocks or chairs). It was dirty. All this for $36 a night!
You can do so much better than this in this village.

This was a very inexpensive hotel. We were on a budget when we visited Playa del Coco in Costa Rica. More or less clean. Quit old. I would recommended finding somethng else. Staff was more of less ok.
