Detailed Reviews
Fantastic 20 days. Unit 17 is beautifully decorated and maintained in excellent condition. I believe that most units are the same design, but 17 is much prettier and more vibrant inside than others we’ve perked at. The water is drinkable from the faucet, AC & ceiling fans maintain perfect temperature, comfy beds and linens. Loved it!! The resort facilities, grounds, and pools are kept in immaculate condition. Cesar & his fellow office personnel provide exceptional concierge services. For example: The dive boat picked us up from & dropped us back at the resort, and the COVID-19 testers came to our door for less $$ than anywhere else. Smiles, excellent service, and friendly greetings made us feel like part of the family instead of just guests passing through. The private cove and black sand beach are beautiful and uncrowded. Colorful fish abound near the rocky points in the bay. The ocean water is always a bit murky when snorkeling, but still worth the effort. The infinity pool and lap pool are my favorites! The Maracuya restaurant (onsite) is delightful and serves such good food that you could eat there e dry day. We look forward to our next visit.

I took my four kids, just 5 of us, to Costa Rica for the first time, and we loved it. This place was recommended by a friend who had taken her family a few years earlier, and she was correct!! There is a quiet, clean, sunny beach (with shade trees nearby), pool, bar, restaurant and SUPs and kayaks to rent (inexpensively) all right there. I just read the many positive reviews, and I agree with all of them so I won't be too repetitive. Here are things that specifically stood out as they cannot always be expected. Our condo (#22) has everything you need to cook, and we cooked often. Sometimes you are left with odds at ends when you rent, but not here, our place had every utensil and pan we could need. There was even a sterio and good music/CD collection, some family games to play, and a cooler for cold drinks and snacks on the beach. The views of the private beach from I think ALL the condos are very good. I felt safe a secure within the complex, and also with the polite, charming, professional and excellent staff. Everything was very clean and well kept. Food at the restaurant was excellent, and served on time by happy kitchen workers (who we sometimes saw coming and going). It just has a happy atmosphere, from everyone. There was live music one night, a man and his daughter, who sang probably better than any live performance that I have ever seen in such a small setting. What a treat that was! Fresh Drinks are tasty and there is a good wine selection as well.

+1
We stayed at Pez Vela for 4 nights. While it’s located about a 10-12 minute car/taxi ride from Coco, once you arrive you don’t have to leave.
The property has numerous private villas spread out through the mountain, all facing the ocean. Near the restaurant Maracuya, there is also 3 joined pools (including 1 Infiniti pool) and a beach area.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating. They’re happy to help anything you need.
It was just 2 of us and we had an excellent time, however I would recommend this more for groups, bigger families or 2 couples because the villas are the size of a house with multiple rooms, bathrooms, full kitchens and a decent amount of space to spread out. It’s also bit outside of town so if you don’t have a car, it’s easier to just stay on the property which was also fine by us. We had a few issues with taxi’s charging us all sorts of different prices for trips and we’re reluctant to get into them towards the end of our trip. They’re not unsafe, however there are drivers that want to take advantaged. The trip from Pez Vela to town is $10, if you’re lucky to find an Uber available
It’ll cost you about half of that, which we really preferred. We learned it’s better to confirm the prices of taxi’s as you’re getting in so it’s clear on what the cost will be.
The villas are very clean, although you’ll want to bring all the essentials you’d need in an Airbnb type of stay - any food/coffee you want to prepare, soap/toiletries for the bathrooms and laundry detergent if you’d like to wash clothes.
Cesar and Abi at the office are very helpful, we really trusted them to guide us and they didn’t disappoint.

My wife and I stayed in Villa # 2 , which is on the bottom of the resort steps away from the gorgeous beach , restaurant and two pools. Our Villa was hard to beat, particularly the views and location. Our kitchen was fully equipped, spacious and well laid out. The kitchen was connected to a well furnished , covered patio that had a solid gas grill we used to grill fresh fish. Our master bedroom was on the second floor and connected to a small balcony where we drank coffee and watched the monkeys monkeying around. Checking in and out was a breeze. (The young lady at front desk was sweet and helpful as could be).The report was very peaceful and relaxing. But it was not far from busy Coco . You will need a car because of the need to dive up and down the steep hill separating the resort from the outside world. Not sure about the other Villas or their view of the Pacific. Perhaps the resort’s web page could be more informative in that regard.

Our family of six just spent an amazing week at Bahia Pez Vela ("Villa Gecko"). Check-in was a breeze with Cesar at the office (he's incredibly helpful and literally provides "service with a smile"). The villa was spacious, well-appointed and was immaculate when we arrived. The resort has a lovely secluded beach that at times we had entirely to ourselves. The grounds are lush and incredibly well maintained The on-site restaurant next to the pool was a pleasant surprise. We ate a number of dinners there and the service and food were both excellent (I highly recommend trying the fish dishes as it's all fresh and locally caught). We had a car for the week and enjoyed travelling to the adjacent beaches (Hermosa and Ocotal) and ate some dinners out as well (highly recommend Ginger in Hermosa for tapas and La Caveja in Coco for Italian/Pizza). If you are looking at visiting Costa Rica and staying in Guanacaste look no further. Bahia Pez Vela is your home in paradise!

This is the 2nd time we’ve stayed at Bahia Pez Vela and we will be back again and again. Cesar, the property manager, is one of the nicest and most helpful people on earth. He will help you with a day excursion, immediately fix any issue you have or just be around for general helpful advice. You do need a car if you want to explore in your own. Don’t be fooled by any location in Costa Rica and the distance from one place to another. These roads are not straight and over lots of steep terrain, you can’t walk it. I guess you can call a taxi, our villa neighbor did, but part of what we love about Costa Rica is getting out and exploring. Rent the car and enjoy. The beach here is quiet and beautiful. Even during the busiest time of the year, New Year, it wasn’t anything like the crowded beaches in the Gulf of Mexico that we are accustomed to. It’s peaceful and perfectly safe. The restaurant on site makes for an easy lunch or dinner but if you have a car you can easily run to CoCo to the grocery store. We love it here and can’t wait to come back!

We spent 2 weeks at the Bahia Pez Vela resort to wrap up our 6 week stay in Costa Rica. Of all the places we stayed, this was our favorite! Our 5 small kids loved exploring the beach with its mild waves. The pools were great with a beautiful view of the ocean from the infinity pool. The Bahia Pez Vela staff were very friendly and accommodating. The restaurant onsite was excellent for a snack by the pool, or a nice dinner. The chef at the Maracuya restaurant went as far as personally driving our dinner to our villa one night, just to make things easier for us! Henry and Liz were great hosts and very communicative throughout our stay. They made sure that we had a high chair for our baby and also immediately fixed an issue with the air conditioner. They also increased the internet speed to 100mbps to accommodate my request for faster speeds! They really went above and beyond in all areas and we're already planning our next visit!

We had our family of 12 staying in two villas. They accommodated us one next to each other. Villa Gecko includes a swimming pool and it is in excellent condition. Next door is Villa Congo which has no swimming pool but an amazing view.
We highly recommend the restaurant Maracuya, especially their Friday Night BBQ night. The food and service were beyond our expectations and their live band was very enjoyable.
The beach is semi-private in a closed bay so it is not overcrowded.
This is a good place also to get away as it feels very secluded and surrounded by nature.

My family and I had an amazing stay at villa number 33/Flying V villa in June 2021. The photos don’t do justice to how incredibly beautiful this place is. The breathtaking view of the blue ocean can be seen from the patio, the bedrooms and other parts of the house. The house itself is so elegant, the decorations fit together in one theme, making you feel calm, peaceful and happy. The house is very clean and equipped with all the supplies you would need not only in the kitchen but in the bathrooms and even in the laundry room. The Infiniti pool is a short walk from the villa. Every interaction with the owners was pleasant. Both Verda and Neil were exceptionally helpful, giving us tips on where to go, what to do, what to see, where to eat, etc. They provided us with directions and travel guides which were all helpful in deciding where to go especially when you have a limited time with so many places to see. We enjoyed the Maracuya restaurant which was right on the beach. We had a chance to see the owners’ second villa which was being occupied by friends of ours, located right on the beach. Our family could not decide which villa was more beautiful so we plan on renting their second villa next time we come to Bahia Pez Vela. Both are super gorgeous! The owners made sure that we had a great time and that we did, more than we could say!

Bahia Pez Vela was a pleasant resort and I enjoyed my stay, but it is not as good as the reviews would lead you to believe.
Pros: You have your own villa with 3 bedrooms, there was a small private beach; it was secluded; the staff was friendly; there were adequate kitchen supplies and furnishings; the pools were nice; there was a restaurant. The price is reasonable for 6 guests. Several of the villas at the top of the hill and the beachfront villas have nice views. The wifi worked well. If you have kids or want to go to the beach a lot stay in a villa close to the beach.
Cons: Smaller beach - could get crowded and more non-guests than guests; this place is off the beaten track - v. bad roads so rent a larger car; difficult to walk the area without effort and being a serious walker; the hill in the resort is very steep; if you stay at a villa at top of the hill you will likely drive down or just skip the beach entirely and stick with the pool; If you want a view and don't want to be exposed to everyone stay at a villa at the top of the hill. Few of the villas at the bottom have really good views (even the ocean view ones are often v. limited views); the beachfront villas have great views but can be very exposed and lack privacy; many of the villas look rundown, and the furniture was too, but it was all functional and didn't really impact stay (although not always the most comfortable); we had maintenance issues (most small, some more serious like with appliances); the restaurant food was OK; it is a drive to the grocery store and most outside restaurants; the price is high for 2 guests. There are no extra amenities, like a gym. Some nights it was pretty noisy up to 10 or 11 pm.
Overall, if you are looking for a more secluded location with pools and a beach, and a place to yourself and don't mind driving on bad roads for groceries, shopping, or restaurants, this is a good place to stay, esp. if you have six guests.

We stayed in one of the condos at the top and the walk is very steep. My husband and I exercise regularly and we were both winded by the time we walked up. It’s great exercise but not a pleasant walk back in the heat if you forgot your sunscreen.
It is a wonderful place for families. We took are teenage boys and chose this resort so we all could spread out and have privacy. It was amazing and Caesar, both at reception, and Caesar in the restaurant made our stay even better. We were not on the beach but one tier up and there were villas with private pools. The villa next to ours was a family with younger children. The beach is pretty private which is nice.
Probably not a good choice for a person with mobility issues. Lots of stairs everywhere and no easy access to the beach. There a plenty of full services resorts in Costa Rica that might be a better fit for your party.
