My wife Susan and I loved our stay at Villia Buena Onda. Tucked back from the beach with a stunning view of the Gulf of Papagayo, this eight room hotel provides luxury and intimacy that larger scale resorts never could. The staff, from the the front desk, to the waiting staff, to cleaning staff, and even the cook, were professional while being extremely personable. The setting provides all the privacy you could want, while the intimate scale allows you to get to know the other guests. We shared our table at dinner with a number of fascinating couples. There was even dog therapy when the manager let her four-month old beagle Taz out for a visit.

Do the beach in the morning, the pool in the afternoon and meet new friends at happy hour! (...and get the massauge!)

My wife and I are the kind of people who despise huge 600 room resorts when we are on vacation; therefore, this 8 room boutique adult only hotel was perfect for us. The attention and service you get at a hotel of this size is unparalleled. The staff here was fantastic, Cesar, Christian, Carlos, Javier and everyone else were on top of their game. If we did not have a little one on the way, we would definitely be back within a year.

If its any indication of how amazing this place is this was our third trip to Villa. We decided to come back again this year in January for a post holiday relaxation trip. We chose to come here again because we knew exactly what to expect and what you should expect is some of the best staff and people who make you not only feel like a welcomed guest buy like friends. After our third trip here we can honestly say we have made friends with the people who work here and can't wait to come back for a fourth time. This being our 3rd time here over 4yrs the same staff has always been here and that to me is a great indication of the not only how great this place is but also how comforting it is to come back and see the same friendly faces who great you with open arms and smiles.
The hotel itself is located on a hillside secluded enough to make you feel like you are away from the real world but a short taxi ride away (5min) from a great nightlife in Coco and another 10-15min taxi ride from two amazing but different beaches, Ocotal and Hermosa Beach, that both provide a real Pura Vida vibe. The rooms are very spacious and they all have amazing views of the property and ocean views. I would always choice an upstairs corner room to take advantage of the corner showers that provide panoramic views that make the rainfall showers even better.
The food deserves its own review and is some of the best tasting food I've ever had. It is alll local sourced and some of the freshest local Costa Rican food. The drink menu is vast and provides plenty of options from wines and local craft beers to fresh made in house cocktails (green iguana is amazing!) They also make the best chiliguaro in Coco and is a personal favorite of ours.
We love this place because of the people. Carlos, Javier, Alex, Cesar, Marijke (and Tasmania!), Christian and the entire staff have become friends and we can't wait to visit our friends again.

It´s something we can not express in pictures and it makes all of us so happy to know that it´s one of the reasons we can count on seeing you back (aside of the beautiful beaches, rooms and great food of course)! In name of all of the VBO Team (including Taz of course) thank you for sharing your kind words and we can´t wait for your 4th visit! We´ll make sure it only will get better :) Pura vida!

We recently returned from spending a week at Villa Buena Onda for our family vacation. While the hotel serves primarily as an adults-only resort, when rented in entirety, it can be used by families. It was a trip of a lifetime. Every single staff member went above and beyond to care for us like members of their own family. Every detail was taken care of.
Everyone we encountered on this trip was so kind and helpful, from those running excursions, to our drivers, massage therapists and first and foremost, everyone at VBO. My mom, who is disabled, stayed comfortably in the ground level accessible suite, and staff were extra attentive of her needs as well as those of the gaggle of children with us. The cooking class on site was so fun! We also enjoyed the NYE celebration our last night, when we were treated to extra-special entertainment and a lovely feast.
The rooms at VBO are luxurious and comfortable, with breathtaking ocean views. We spent a lot of time at the pool and gazebo hanging out and relaxing. The kids LOVED the swing. The spa was secluded and so quiet.
The food at VBO is exquisite. We thoroughly enjoyed every single meal we had. I think we all gained several pounds on this trip from happy bellies! The drinks were tasty and premium. The chefs made extra efforts to keep our kids happy with specials just for them.
This vacation was so amazing because of the efforts of every single member of the staff, and for that we are forever grateful.
We hope to visit again soon! Pura Vida

My wife and I, along with 16 of our kids and grandkids, spent a week at Villa Buena Onda. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we could not have been happier with our choice of houses. It was literally perfect. The house is clean, air conditioning works great, the rooms are quiet even with crying babies next door, the views are spectacular especially at sunset, and the layout for a large family to be able to spread out when you want and come together when you want was exactly what we needed. Loved the 2 pools and surrounding areas. We did the full meal plan and the food was an absolute highlight. Great variety, incredible quality and taste, and the presentation at each meal was so much fun. Meal times were worked around our schedule, was easy to plan and they even made adjustments to the menu to please our 6 grandkids that ranged in age from 1 year to 13 yrs. As good as all of this was, these items pale in comparison to just how great the staff is. Wow! Their attention to customer service was so far above what we expected that it is hard to describe. What just genuinely good, friendly and talented people these people are. The chef Marianela and house keepers Elieth and Roxana were so good at their jobs and always friendly and willing to help any way we needed. Carlos keeps the grounds looking pristine and even cut down coconuts to show the kids how to drink coconut water out of them. Diego was our concierge and was always available by WhatsApp to arrange transportation, give us guidance on tipping, or any other cultural questions we had. The house manager Heidy was so friendly, always had a smile on her face, was always working in the background and ensured everything was smooth and easy. We just loved her. And then there is Samuel! What an amazing man. He worked in the kitchen, in the house, around the pool, interacted just as easily with the kids as with the adults. Long days and always with a smile. We just loved him as well. Villa Buena Onda is a great place to explore a new country from and to make friends that we will cherish for life. Highly recommend this place.

I don’t know where to start. Our family of 17 stayed at VBO for the second half of our week in Costa Rica. It was perfect.

I could not speak more highly of the staff. Diego was so kind and thorough with communication prior to our arrival in arranging everything we needed. I wanted to surprise the graduates we were celebrating with a special cake during dinner and Diego arranged everything for me and the cake was both beautiful and delicious!

We hired the chef to prepare 6 meals for us and they were all so amazing and included variety of local and other dishes. Everything was so fresh and plentiful. The fruit and homemade rolls were to die for!

We hired the bartender Michael for a full day of service and he was so awesome! Friendly, creative with the drinks and just made our day so special.

The housekeeping staff were pleasant and kept everything nice.

Several of us booked massages and the little spa casita on site and the services rendered by the therapists were very fairly priced and satisfying as well.

Last but absolutely not least, was Samuel. Such a nice, hardworking young man. He was so helpful to us and answered every question or request we had. We truly appreciated the awesome service we received.

I would love to return some day to this absolutely beautiful villa!

An absolutely fantastic and memorable family vacation. The house is beautiful. The bedrooms and private baths are huge, well appointed and the views from the private balconies are breathtaking. It was relief that the Villa had ADA accessible rooms and bathrooms for some of our more senior family members and the walk-in access on both levels of the infinity pool was a huge benefit. Food and service was five+ star. Heidy and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Travel to town was within walking distance and the new grocery store down the street was a huge benefit. Can't say enough great things about this property.

Not sure where to begin. I was invited to visit Villa Buena Onda as part business part leisure trip. Travel into Liberia was smooth and the airport is such a better experience than San Jose. After a short drive, we arrived at the property and I was immediately impressed by the well kept grounds and the curb appeal of the property. We were greeted by the staff and for the next 6 days, we enjoyed days of relaxing by the pool, venturing out for hikes and trips on the water. Each morning we sat outside and enjoyed the view of the Pacific while the staff served up a delicious breakfast of traditional and local fare. It only got better at night for dinner. The chef and the staff served amazing dinners each night. The pool and the outdoor bar area make for a relaxing day or evening. My room was spacious, decorated nicely, super clean and had views out to the ocean that you usually see only in magazines. Bottom line - this villa is the perfect getaway for a private and pampered getaway. The real secret is the incredible local staff that runs the place. Everyone was friendly and greeted us with a smile. Charlie the concierge made it all happen including a fishing trip he booked for me. I brought my catch back to the villa and the chef prepared an amazing fish dinner in true Costa Rican fashion. This gem of a place, nestled above Playa del Coco, is a rare find. Super private. I look forward to returning.

Villa Buena Onda is nestled in the hills above playas del Coco. The villa is on a large piece of property which is beautifully landscaped and impeccably maintained. It faces the ocean, and has stunning views of Coco bay. The villa is quiet and feels secluded, but it is a short walk from the bustling beach town of Coco. The rooms were all spacious, well appointed and immaculate. The centerpiece of the villa is a gorgeous two-tiered swimming pool, complete with a waterfall and swim up bar. We enjoyed wonderful excursions each day (snorkeling, hiking a volcano, swimming beath a breathtaking water fall), but we were always excited to return to the comfort of the villa.

The dining at Villa Buena Onda is exceptional. All of the meals were served al fresco at a large dining table on the terrace above the pool. Each day began with a bountiful breakfast, which always included fresh papaya, mango, and other tropical fruits which were picked daily from the villa's orchard. In addition to standard American fare, breakfast would always include a few traditional Costa Rican choices which were introduced and explained to us by our loveable waiter, Samuel.

Lunch was unnecessary, as our days were filled with activities outside the villa. But when any of our group found themselves in the villa at mid-day, Nala would make sure they were fed warm pupusas, or guacamole prepared with avocados freshly picked from the orchard.

After our daily excursions, our whole party (17 in all) would gather for dinner. We sat together beneath the stars while an attentive staff served us extraordinary meals and excellent wine.

If you are looking for a really special getaway for a group, this is the place. I know our group is looking forward to returning to Vila Buena Onda.

This house had it all - the accommodations for our family and friends was perfect. In addition to a comfortable home and beautiful outdoor pool area, the view of the ocean from our location was just spectacular. The meals were prepared by the house staff, and offered a wide variety of fresh seasonal fruits, vegetables, meats and seafood. Our chef was creative, and we came home with a few great recipes! Abigail was terrific, and helped book many excursions for us - this made all of our adventure seeking seamless, and many of the tour guides went above board for us because they knew we were referred by Abigail. We would definitely be interested in renting this home again!

Hi Charles! Our rooms have with TV, AC, however, only our Oasis Suite and Master Suite have a mini bar/fridge. None of our rooms have a microwave though, as the villa has a restaurant that serves the three daily meals. Lete us know if you have any other questions! Regards

Hi Lorraine, Thanks for your question. The northwest region of Guanacaste is the driest part of Costa Rica, especially between December and April. For September one can expect sunny hot & humid mornings with quick afternoon showers every other day or two. Sometimes, it rains in the evenings. Either case, these scattered showers are the perfect excuse for a power nap in the tropics - especially if one's been around scouting the area with tours. These are ideal moments to relax and recharge batteries to keep enjoying your stay. You are coming at a great moment! We are very excited to meet you at VBO in a few weeks. Regards, VBO Team

The hotel is fairly isolated but the hotel shuttle will take you into town. Taxis are also available. There are shops and restaurants in town, very touristy.
