I LOVED Chef Max's dishes...every one was delicious. I was so grateful for Captain Bill taking us snorkeling, and getting us to Nadi for the day (we grabbed some bread for the breakfast bar next morning at the bakery while we were there!) and got a special dip in the ocean as a reward. :) Wati and Dave and Lumeli, the Manager, the whole place, in fact! are all wonderful. It honestly felt like family. Ana took care of housekeeping in our very simple but spacious and airy 2 bed beachfront bure. I loved the shower off the main house, with the private airy view of the trees above. Cat lovers will love the several kitties on property; dog lovers will love the neighbor's sweet rescues that walk the beach each day. Everyone comes for the legendary surf offshore. Stay for the warmth of Funky Fish. Seriously.…
What do you expect for this price?? Well actually a lot!! This no 5 star resort with a 5 star price tag, this is just a well maintained cheap resort that provides everything you need... seriously nothing is wanted. Rooms are clean and well maintained, you get a bed (a little hard for my liking) a fridge/tea/coffee/jug. Best of all an outdoor shower!! ceiling fan no aircon, but we are under trees so is cool enough Restaurant/Bar/Pool are very good. Clean and maintained. Staff are super friendly, Tumeli manager really makes you feel welcomed and food is amazing (Thanks to Max) Best of all is the view ... volumes could be written... this is truly the heart of this place!!! not a 5 star resort but has 5+ star beach and ocean views. Truly hidden gem 💎
Enjoy your afternoon siesta by the pool on the big bed loungers by the pool and the sea breeze of Funky Fiji. Tucked out of the way, 23km, one hour catamaran boat ride, from Denarau Island, in between the big fancy resorts, on Malolo island, is the very funky resort of Funky Fish, your tranquil home in Fiji. Suited for the all you can get surfers or for those like me that seek privacy away from the bustling hoards of tourists on Denarau island. From Denarau, you catch the big catamaran for 120FJD one way. The price includes resort pick at 7am in Nandi, or expect to pay 7$-25$ FJD by taxi depending how close to the Denarau marina your resort is: Or, if I had known, you could catch the Malolo cat for $80FJD and be dropped off at the Musket cove resort on Malolo island, about a 20 minute or 5km long boat ride from Funky fish. Ring the Funky fish beforehand to ask for price, or, if you really want to miss Nadi or Denarau altogether, from the airport go directly to Denarau wharf. Be sure to contact Funky beforehand to organise a private taxi boat direct to Funky Fish for about $250FDS. There are 8 funky bures 2.4mx2.4m just bigger than a double bed, with basic standard and adjoining outside indoor shower and flushing toilet. Space inside is a squeeze so travel lightly. Don’t be put off by the marks on the linen. They’re clean. 😀 Each Bure has a ceiling fan, small fridge and hot water jug for tea or coffee. Open the door and shutters and you have the cool ocean breeze and small deck and chairs. There are two, two bedroom bures with kitchen facilities and lounge for those who need to spread out. The pride taken by the house cleaner who refreshed my room each morning did a great job, while having breakfast. The cook makes perfect poached, scrambled or sunny side up eggs. You’ll love the fresh pawpaw and pineapple with your toast, fruit juice and for me, endless cups of coffee. ☕️. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included in the price for each nights stay. Dinner meals included, fish n chips and ice cream, spaghetti bolegnaise, curry chicken or pork chow mein. A desert is always included for dinner. Meal portions are dependent on your body size and appetite. You won’t go hungry. One morning I took a boat ride $45FJD to the grocery store and ATM at Musket cove and dropped by the resort for lunch. The dining, reception and bar surround the 2m metre deep infinity pool that over looks the ocean views. The reception area has wifi. I managed to download the last three episodes of Ozark on my phone. Intermittent 3G/4G is available depending on which bure you’re staying in. If you’re desperate to keep in touch with outside world ask to stay in the Funky 1 bure closest to the bar reception area, though bure 1-4 are close to the generator. Each bure is not more than two metres from the high tide mark of the beach. Enjoy the ocean views as sea breeze erodes the stresses and tension of work back home. From your bure, you’ll notice a pontoon oil rig looking structure on the Horizon 4km away, near the reef. It’s cloud 9, the floating booze and dance party bar. There you’ll meet the day trippers from Nadi and other resorts on Malolo island, wearing speedos and slinky gorgeous bikinis. You can buy a pass to Cloud 9 if want to hang out with the hipster sun worshiping crowd on Cloud 9 at funcky fish. Each session on cloud 9 is about 4 hours so If you’d like to spend all day there, you’ll need to pay for two and do boogie away on cloud 9. 👙🩲🕺 Funky fish resort have great XXL hammocks hanging between coconut trees to laze about and ponder, kayaks for the energetic and stand up paddle boards. There are surf boards to use but serious surfers bring their own. Each trip to the surf on the other side of the reef, takes about 30 minutes and costs 75$FJD for a four hour 🏄♂️ 🏄♀️ surfing thrill. There are also walking and running tracks for the athletic hiker and the views at the top of the hill of Malolo are spectacular. Funky fish is where the lithesome spirit hangs out. It’s suited for the adventurous couple, single traveller or bunch of surfing mates. At Funky fish, you’ll meet locals from all over Fiji working together to provide the best service they can. Each guest is treated like family and there is always a smile from all the workers who includes; the garden caretaker, the boating managers, the kitchen manager, bar manager, cleaning department manager, big machine engineer and the of cause the quiet Fiji Indian maintenance manager. Hospitality workers and Funky fish are genuine. All resort staff are organised and happily support each other as they go about their work, alongside the careful, gentle, and welcoming resort manager, Mr Tumeli. Bring along some repellent for the evenings, in case the breeze drops away. All you need to pack to stay here is a 6kg back pack. It’s all you need. Enjoy and safe travels to and from Funky Fish. Thank you Mr Tumeli and please extend my thanks to your wonderful team. A big vinaka to all of you. I give Funky Fish, 5 big bulla, funky fish out of 5, for privacy, down to earth, hidden local oasis, set amount the sea breeze, coconut palm tree canopy not far from Nandi, Denarau tucked among the big resorts of Plantation island, 6 Senses and Musket Cove. Funky Fish is truely, your home in Fiji. “Welcome Home.”…
Funky Fish Beach Resort Malolo Island Fiji There is NO BEACH RESORT here! Accommodation was substandard. We were allocated a 3m by 3m box. I had previously emailed the manager that we were not young travellers (60 and 57 year olds). The shower and toilet were dirty and there was mould on the interior bin and bar fridge. The staff had no knowledge of surfing and there were NO safety measures in place that were necessary for a international traveller wanting to surf. The surfboards that we were expected to hire for for $45 each a day were waterlogged, chipped and they had no fins. The sheets on our bed were stained and dirty so we took them off and were forced to sleep on a bare mattress. The meal plans outlined on the website are FALSE. There were NO MEAL PLANS. NO 3 MEALS A DAY. There was no other boat to take us to the mainland until the next morning. There was no bread for breakfast the next day and we were forced to pay an additional fee to catch the earlier boat that morning. Another traveller who was an elderly Fijian wished to leave with us but the manager insisted he stay and wait for the later boat or pay the extra amount as we did. He was subsequently left alone on the beach to walk from the jetty back to his room. The manager did not care about this poor man, only obtaining more money. Dreadful Experience and we are out of Pocket 1000 dollars!!!!…
Thank you to the Funky Fish team, the warmth and hospitality shown to our family during our 5 day stay made for an incredible holiday. With great snorkelling right out the front and surfing and diving a short boat ride away the Funky Fish is an ideal location that doesn't break the budget.
Funky fish! What a place. We were welcomed on arrival by the very gracious Tumeli, who throughout our stay took very good care of us. From organising daily trips (cloud 9, Mala Mala etc) to transfers to different islands. It's a simple, relaxed, easy going surf vibe. Max cooks the best eggs every morning, whilst you sit in the shade over looking the ocean. The pool is kept beautifully clean and it's fortunately cool temperature - very much needed in the hot Fiji sun! We stayed in one of the basic beach huts with a fan, would reccomend an air con room if you're a light sleeper. But can't really complain when waking up to the incredible view of the sea every day. Thank you for the great time!
The staff took great care of us and the meals were outstanding! Tumeli was available for our every need. Chef Pete created incredible dishes for us each day. Bill took us for all-day tours for Fj$300 (so worth the money since there were four of us). The family bures didn't have AC, but it turned out to be cool enough with fans and screened windows throughout. The Wi-Fi was only available in the lobby and was incredibly slow. I still gave them 5 stars because of the value and top-notch service.
I booked a 3 day trip here at the end of March. My wife, my 18 yr daughter and 72-yr old mom accompanied me. We booked a 2 bedroom beachside bure that was inclusive of all meals. The room amenities said they included A/C, Desk and Safe. The resort said they inc.; outdoor grill, arcade/game room, grocery/convenience store, playground, laundry. I mention these specifically, since none of them existed. The lack of A/C was particularly irritating since it is a near requirement for my wife, who easily overheats in hot humid environments, and occasionally needs a respite. My wife was very disturbed as we were checking in, and we were offered a pair of mountain rooms that had A/C, but as titled (mountain) they are up a very steep and long set of stairs. We decided to stay in the 2 BD bure with fans and no A/C. The resort is very rustic, and has little to do besides the excursions, partly due to Covid (hiking was extremely limited with trails closed and overgrown), and the beach being extremely shallow. It can be navigated at high or very low tide, but neither is easy. I recommend booking a boat for the day (300FJ$) instead of individual (per person excursions), especially if you either have 4 people or join up with other guests. It gives value and freedom. The food was excellent, more simple on certain days with low supplies, but many choices when the mainland supply came in. Tumeli the manager is definitely on Fiji time, but met our needs. The rest of the staff was very responsive.…
The host/manager Tumeli met us at the dock. He made sure we had everything we needed from our minute of arrival until our departure. He made our trip delightful. Arranging our excursions with Captain Bill whenever we wanted. Out of the four days we stayed we did 5 hour boat trips 2 days and 2 days we visited close islands. Captain Bill took us to Cloud nine, Treasure Island, Castaway Island where we picked up pizza to go and partied on. I recommend visiting honeymoon island for snorkeling I was there three times at different tide levels. Pete, the chef, changed the menu daily to make sure we had a delicious variety. To my surprise Reapi the housekeeper quietly kept the room clean at all times. Overall a super great vacation place.
