+ Wifi included
+ Good breakfast included and other food is also good.
+ room was not bad. Spacious. (Double room with own bath and air conditioning... which caused us getting a very bad cold though, so better watch out when using it overnight!)
+ staff was nice and friendly
...the bad:
- like many other accommodations at this place, electricity is only available at night and in the morning
- the price is rather high
... and the ugly:
- like all the other comments say, the whole place is in the middle of a goddamn junkyard, no kidding! It stinks like... very very bad stuff. If you ever fall off the path/stonebridge (which has absolutely no guarding handrail) which leads you from the long beach to the main building of the Matahari "Chalet & resort", no immunization or flue shot on earth can protect you from the probably not yet even discovered illnesses you will get from the disgustingly smelling and partly sharp-edged stuff/black-brown mass down there. Don't ever take the path when you are drunk or you are doomed, buddy.
However, the long Beach is in general crowded with litter, but the position of this place seems to be especially bad. They say that the last Monsoon has destroyed a lot on the east coast of the island and scattered the beach with nasty stuff, but however, nobody is interested in cleaning the area. They just create new buildings in the middle of the junkyard as the people will come and pay the overpriced rooms anyhow... which is quite sad for the nice island.
Summed up:
If you have bad luck and you get a chalet in the first row, you directly step into the mentioned trash every day. We had no chalet, but a double room in a bigger building which was way better. However the air condition killed our health over night and this was it for the partying. All what was left was us being sick in a trashyard and so we moved over to another hotel (Senja's) at the "coral beach" on the west of Perhentian Kecil (small island) after just 2 nights. We should have stayed there from the beginning! Nicer beach with nearly no trash at all!
Our recommendation:
Even if you are looking for partys on long beach every day, search for a good accommodation on coral beach and take the 10 minute footwalk over to the long Beach instead. This is definitely the better way!
My girlfriend had to wait by the reception for 2 hours to grab a room when people checked out. That is the only way you can get a room. We were also there during a long weekend tie in with public holidays. We were lucky. Others had to just leave the island because it was so packed.
Rooms are clean and be thankful for the mosquito net it really makes a difference. close your windows before dark before mozzy starts to come out as well. Bathrooms are even more basic but functional. Chalet is very rustic and has it's own charm though. i had a fan room and didn't feel uncomfortable at all through the night. cold showers as well
At the end come to Perhentian not because you are looking for a great place to stay but rather the charm of the island itself and it won't matter where you stay.
I didn't smell any sewage etc like what the other reviews said so don't worry.
I would stay here again.

Ps see you soon haha
Our experience only improved over the time we spent there, and as such we extended a planned three day stay into a one-week extravaganza of lying on the beach, sleeping, and eating delicious food. The adjoining restaurant even provided one evening meal for free for matahari guests.
Just a stone's throw from the pristine crystal clear waters that lapo against a pure white beach, this is the closest we have ever been to living on a paradise island.
The staff didn't go out of their way to be friendly or helpful, they just were by nature both of these. The guy who ran the logistics of the place even came partying with us.
Excellent value, cheap & good laundry service, well manicured lawns and gardens, highly recommended. We were sure we hjad the best value on Long Beach. BIG SMILES!
Also lots of mosquito bites because there were holes in the mosquito net.
The chalet was terribly hot because it did not get any shade during the day.
Internet did not work at all.
Don t go.
None of us have very high expectations especially when you are paying relatively little for accomodation, all we asked for was a clean room and the services that we were paying for to work. Apparently this was too much to ask. First off the door to our room wouldn't lock. After being sent on a wild goose chase (to the dive shop and the beach) we eventually found someone to 'help'. The man who spoke very little English proceeded to spend the next 20 mintues trying to lock the door. He eventually got it locked and the key out and told us that it was fixed. He didn't quite understand that we didn't want a 20 minute battle with the door everytime we left the room. Eventually he got a screw driver and after another 40 minutes of waiting the door was fixed. Problem one solved.
Now to inside the room, once again I would like to stress we are not generally fussy travellers, but hopefully after the following you will understand why we were pretty unimpressed with this place. 1 - There was mould all over the ceiling, 2 - Everytime you flushed the loo it leaked all over the bathroom floor, 3 - we didn't have hot water once during our stay (even though we were paying for a hot water room), 4 - one night we had no running water at all and had to wait until 2 in the morning to have a shower. During this time we couldn't find anyone to help us or advise what to do. 5 - our air conditioning broke after the 1st night. Their answer to this was to spend 20 minutes pressing buttons on the remote control (we had already tried this) and then tell us it was broken (in case we hadn't worked that out already).
In summary the whole experience became a bit of a joke, and like another person who has posted a review, in the accomodation we have stayed in since, the phrase "at least it's not as bad as Matahari" has been used frequently.
Not wanting to leave things on a complete negative - the location is pretty good, central on the beach, behind the main cafes. However, I would not recommend a stay here.
We stayed in two rooms here over a week-long period (in neither of which the toilet worked). After bed bug problems in our first room we were begrudgingly moved to another chalet. But when the problems persisted the staff became extremely unhelpful and after a dispute about laundry costs they became very aggressive and threatened not to allow us to leave the island if we did not pay them what they wanted. With no cash left, no cash-points on the Perhentians and our debit cards not working on their card machine, this resulted in them forcing us to borrow money from some fellow guests - most humiliating.
The rooms at Matahari are not terrible, but they are grossly over priced for what they provide. Considering this was one of the most expensive places we stayed during a 3 month backpacking trip around S.E. Asia it is rather ironic that it was also the worst. The staff at Matahari conduct themselves with an arrogance that must have resulted from spending too long on a desert island and a detachment from the levels of service that should really be expected.
The Perhentian Islands themselves are easily the most beautiful islands I have ever visited, but please do yourself a favour and AVOID Matahari.
