Detailed Reviews
This isn’t somewhere you just stumble across, as it is at the end of the beach on Coral Bay; there is no reception but rather a whiteboard which you write your name and chalet number on; and a bunch of chalets from which to choose from and check yourself into! Incredibly trusting system that works so well!
You get a rustic chalet with a fan and mosquito net; the electricity goes off in the daytime; you will likely get lizards and a couple of bugs, and we even came home to a little snake one night. But you could get these anywhere on the island, and pay 2-4 times the price! It is so so cheap at Butterfly, and you get the best view overlooking the whole bay.
Would definitely recommend, particularly chalet number 14!

This was our third time on this accomodation. Last time 3 and 4 years ago. Now stayed more than one month. Price on March 50 rm per cottage. Best views on the island, quiet but close all service on Coral Bay. Long beach is just opening slowly during March as monsoon season ending. Windy there. Rained only few times during the month.
Butterfly is very simple and mostly old cottages (not much maintained), but behind the front row cottages are newer, the newest ones up there approx 3 years old and nice and spacy. Cannot book in advance, only on site, if someone is checking out. Once you get check in, you can stay as long as you like. This system works well! Always full, even on March. Before this we stayed on April. Summer time prices get up.
Currently kitchen in use, very simple with fridge (might no be electricity during day for it). Electricity for cottages during 19-08 hours. Self service for cleaning or changing towels and linen.
Call Barry on "reception building". No official desk. Note that there is no ATM on island. Cash out with 10 % extra on few places. Exchange possible on Bubu or Amelia (Tropical is most expensive to exchange)...

Aside from the islands themselves being breathtakingly beautiful, I will purely review the accommodation.
After a miserable few days at Rainforest Camp we decided to upgrade to one of Barry's chalets and it was a fantastic decision. We stayed in chalet 14 which appears newer than some of the others, we had a large double room, with private toilet/shower, a fan, electricity between 5pm and 8am, a large balcony with a stunning view over Coral Bay.
The owner is a really nice guy and appears to be doing laundry most of the time so at least you knew your sheets and towels are clean!
The room was clean and tidy with a couple of sets of drawers should you feel the need to use them. The room is basic but compared to some hostels/guesthouses it is superb.
Far enough away from the action to be quiet at night and close enough that the walk doesn't become a chore. 2 minute walk to Coral Bay and a 15 minute walk to Long Beach should night-life be on your agenda.
Buy some mosquito coils and keep them on in your room at all times, the whole Island is absolutely infested with bloodsuckers.
Highly recommended at only 70rm/night.

I went there on 10-12th July 2019
Tips from me .
1. U can't book online
2. This chalet only for walk-in customer
3. U need to stop at Coral Bay Jetty
4. From Jetty you will see Senja Bay Resort then from there you need to walk further up more until you see an old chalet on the rock . That's butterfly chalet !
5. You can stop at Long beach Jetty but you need to walk about 15-20 mnts to Coral Bays by jungle trekking.
6. The price is cheap compare with other chalet .
7. 1night =RM100 but if 2 night =RM140/RM70pernight
8. The room is very basic . Whats in the room?
Clean bed sheet . Bed with net. A fan facing the bed . At night you won't feel hot at all. Toilet is clean . Shower gel, kettle, mug etc please bring your own.
9. Electricity is at 7pm to 7am only . Every room only 1 plug can use . Please bring extra power bank then. 😊
10. No wifi here
11. Phone line also quite difficult to get . I use Umobile . No line at all. For me is fine .
12. The best thing at night while you sleep you will hear sound of waves. And morning you will hear birds chirping . At night amazingly not many mosquito .
13. I bought mosquito qoil brand Fumakilla . I burn 2 qoil, i put inside and outside . I sleep very peacefully.
14. Breakfast not provided .
15. Oh ,I almost forgot .. you need to self check-in .
16. If you see lock with keys at the chalet door meaning the room is yours . If you see one of the door with lock with no keys means someone else already get the room.
Whats else ? If you want to ask further more feel free to message me . I'm happy to help you guys ✌🤗
I'm helen from Kuala Lumpur .

Let me start of by saying this place is very basic. You get a small bungalow which has a bed, mosquito net, a table, fan, and small dresser.
Washroom doesn't come with a hose, but a bucket. Porch has two chairs and a table.
Everything is old and in major need of upkeep. However, you are on the beach and the view is incredible. It's the least expensive property facing the beach by a large margin. I say facing the beach as opposed to on the beach because, you need to walk down a bunch of steps to get to the water. The place is up on a small hill, not in the sand. 30 second walk from room to the water.
The guy running the place is nice and helpful when you can find him. The place doesn't have any common areas. There is construction material everywhere and very ugly, messy. There's no wifi and you can only book a room by walking in.
If you are cool with basic rooms, like a nice view when you wake up, and spend your entire day outside then this is the place for you. You can get cheaper if you don't need a property that's facing the beach.

Loved this place, very similar to rooms I stayed in Perentians in the 90's!!!!
'Barry' the owner [i think that was his name] leaves a sign out and you have to go find him to look at rooms. Also if you see a room with key in lock & door open, then you can self check in!!!!
Rooms have amazing views and everything you need for a proper island stay. Big monitor lizards live near some rooms!!!! Rooms just a few minutes walk to the beach.
Very reasonable rates / as Perentians is a generally a bit over-priced.

First impressions were not the best, but it turns out to be a great place if youre not too fussy. Bed with mossie net, shower and wc, table and chairs, electric from 7pm to 7am, silence, great view over the bay, all you need. No wi-fi, internet cafe and cold beer are 200 meters away. Minimum two night stay.

So relaxed, check in and reservation is unique as they aren't online. Just write your name on the whiteboard when a bungalow becomes available.
Big bungalows, each with own bathroom. Clean linen and mosquito net provided. Fan in room. Very private, excellent views and close to Coral Beach.

If you are expecting luxury, this isn't the place for you. Unlike most places you'll find on the island, you check yourself in by writing your name on a whiteboard and pay the owner for two nights. The rooms are basic but have everything you need. There's no electricity from 7am-7pm, but this is pretty common on the island and you'll spend your days on the beach anyway. The views are incredible, and make the back to basics living worth it.

Where do you find bungalows with a sea view for 60rm (70rm when we left)? Off course you can not expect great luxury, but the view allone is worth it. I don't think you can find cheaper accomodation on the island. The bungalows are very basic, but clean and you even get a towel. Each bungalow has a terrace with view on the sea and the beach is just a few steps away.
Electricity comes only from 7pm to 7am (or 8-9am if the owner sleeps longer or forgets to turn it off ☺). It didn't bother us as we were away all day long.
Note: be carefull with food, as there are squirrls who can enter the room if you leave your window open. One bit through my backpack to get my crackers!
