Malate Pensionne is located in the heart of Malate, a district of Manila on Adriatico St. (formerly Dakota St under the US Commonwealth & Calle Nuevo under Spain). Our building was built by Americans who leased the land from our grandfather to house American workers. When the lease ended, our mother turned it into Dakota Apts. Returning from her European trips & learning of how Italians welcomed weary travelers to their home like family members, she turned Dakota Apts into Malate Valero Pensionne, now well know as the Malate Pensionne with the slogan, "Your home away from Home". As far as we know, we are the only hotel in the world with a strict policy of only registered guests can walk our hallways. We are about a mile from the US Embassy & Rizal Park. About 2 miles from Intramuros, the old walled city of Manila, a 5 min. walk to Robinson Mall. 15 min. by car to Mall Of Asia & 11.5km to the upscale Makati City & Bonifacio Global City. Mabuhay, Bienvenido, Welcome to your "home away from home".

Detailed Reviews
We were hanging out with highschool friends at a favorite restobar in Manila when the typhoon struck and we decided to get a hotel room nearby. Malate Pensionne in Malate provided cozy rooms for us to stay in at a very friendly price. Perfect for budget and transient travelers.

Went back here for a second time.
The staff were friendly and always ready to help, whether it was giving directions or recommending where to makan nearby. The breakfast spread was solid, with a good mix of local and Western options
Overall, I had a great stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone who needs a budget friendly stay. Can’t wait to come back!

This is an old building full of history and character. It is located in Korean Town so there are a lot of good places to eat and plenty of KTV bars! The staff are kind and very helpful. The outdoor patio is a nice place to sip coffee early in the morning.

Old Manila feels of heritage and simplicity. The rooms are just right for travelers on a tight budget or transient guests. If you plan to stay in Manila longer without spending too much then this is the perfect solution for you. There are also good places to eat around the hotel at affordable prices plus it is close to a shopping mall, hospital and public transportation so you don't have to worry.

I had an amazing experience during my three days stay at Malate Pensionne. The staff members were incredibly friendly, helpful and went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel without any hesitation!

I thought I was back in my hometown in La Union, Malate Pensionne gave me the nostalgic feels whenever I go home in LU. My mother's house looks and feels like this. Also, the staff are very accommodating and very friendly. Loved the whole experience. Really a "home away from home."! Indeed.

What a shame. The Malate Pensionne is well-run with excellent service. The small, charming rooms are inviting, but don't expect to get any sleep on a weekend. The disco bar across the street, Padi's Point, blasts so-called music directly into the hotel all night. The noise inside our room in the hotel was so bad that we checked out of the Malate Pensionne around midnight. We're told that the disco stays open as late as 3 AM. This hotel is scratched off my list.

We had a number of issues during our stay at Malate Pensionne, starting with actually getting there. While their website states that they offer airport transfers, this is only very loosely the truth. I emailed twice, once from the booking site I'd booked through, and once through their own website and received no answer. In the end we ended up queuing for a metered taxi at the airport for over an hour, frustrating but definitely worth the wait to save the money. Malate advertise that their airport pickup service at a price of 600pesos, whereas our taxi only cost 210pesos. Similarly to drop you off at the airport Malate advertise a 300peso charge, our taxi (which we got from right outside the hotel without waiting for more than a minute) only cost us 150pesos. No apology was offered at any point for the lack of response about the airport transfer, the staff just shrugged it off.
We booked the car once during our stay and didn't get to use it because it was over 45 minutes late turning up at the hotel and we caught a tricycle instead.
The rooms are very small, we had one with air conditioning that worked very well (although given the size of the room - only slightly bigger than our double bed) it would have been hard not to cool the room down!
The shared bathrooms are good, however lack proper locking doors on most cubicles. All cubicles are made out of frosted glass so you don't get much privacy if there's anyone else in the bathroom with you.
The area isn't particularly nice, there are quite a few restaurants and bars around to choose from but a lot of questionable locals on the streets particularly after dark. It is severely off putting smelling urine whilst walking the streets.
You will always see staff around the hotel, although I'm not sure what they do as rooms aren't cleaned unless specifically requested, they seem to just spend their days sitting talking very loudly on the stairs between the ground floor and first floor. We walked past a number of staff twice with heavy bags, struggling to get them up the stairs and no one offered their help at all - just continued to talk amongst each other.
While one of the cheapest hotels we could find in Manila, we found the Malate to be very overpriced in comparison to the rest of the Philippines, with everywhere else offering much better value for money.
This place is only good for an overnight stay and then move on out of Manila as fast as you can.

Response from Malate P, General Manager at Malate Pensionne
Responded May 26, 2015
Hello! Thank you for giving us a report on your experience. I will personally look into as to why you didn't get a reply when you attempted to book our airport shuttle. In response to your comment about the taxi costing less than a private car, anywhere in the world, a taxi will cost less than a private car. There isn't any comparison. A taxi roves about looking to pick up passengers. A private car strictly caters to the one that reserves its service. P600 takes into consideration that many times, the car has to wait long at a paid parking space for the tourist to clear customs and immigration. We have no control over that and have had many occasions wherein it had to wait hours for the guests to come out of the airport. The drop off fee of P300 is the most reasonable one would ever find anywhere for a comfortable Toyota Camry. It is also safe and should you inadvertently leave anything in the car, it will be turned over to the hotel's lost and found. In a taxi, be it London, New York or anywhere, you will most likely kiss goodbye any item you forgot in the taxi. As far as the car being late for your reservation, we are very mindful of being available at the appointed time. That said, it is a challenge at times when the unpredictable traffic congestion of Manila makes being on time impossible. I myself have sat in my car for almost three hours to travel 11.5 km. Ones virtue of patience will truly be tested. I firmly believe that the beginning of ones experience in a place sets off the tone for the entire "ride", experience, and yours didn't start off well when you attempted to reserve our airport shuttle. In the hospitality business, pleasing each and every guests and living up to their expectations is one we strive for each time and we will continue to do so every time. We have many guests who are pleased and happy with their Malate Pensionne experience and they make us their "home away from home". I make it a point to greet and ask our guests how is their experience as I walk around and I get many thumbs up and smiles. As far as our streets are concerned, we and our hotel and restaurant association, Ermita Malate Business Owners Association, continue to meet with and work with the local government to revitalize our community. It is our most challenging endeavor. If ever you come back to Manila, do give us a second chance & send me an email, You will not be disappointed. Thank you once again and wishing you safe travel and have a great day always. Jay Gutierrez - Gen Mr.

So I have been staying with Malate Pensionne for the past years, since my college days in Iloilo actually and been staying here with friends and family so this is like a great capsule of memories for me.
Last time I checked in however, I realized that this was not the same hotel I have used to love. The standards have gone down the drain, cleanliness is an issue and yes, the staff simply think they know better than you and that you are doing them a favor by staying with them.
Suddenly I miss the old Malate Pensionne and also realized that I also miss the old Malate. This place and the neighborhood has just gone deep down south.
Will probably try it out again in the next decade or so...
