We stayed in two rooms with Family and had an amazing experience in the Shinmonzen. The design and feel of the hotel are beautiful. Considerable time has been spent on making the rooms and public spaces peaceful and functional.

The staff were attentive and went above and beyond for us on our stay - even for what you would expect in Japan. John took us on a walking tour of Kyoto when we arrived, familiarized us gave some great recommendations. He and the team also supported us with a number of bookings.

As the restaurant was recently opened and did an outstanding job. They intended to seek a Michelin Star and I suspect it won't be far off given our experience.

The rooms had a warm Zen feel to them and were very large for Japanese rooms. The bathtab is a great addition. It had the benefit of modern lighting and facilities bedside. It felt like a modern Ryokan.

Great location. Very central and right beside a picturesque stream.

Of all the places we've stayed in Japan this stood out by far.

The Shinmonzen was a perfect experience from the minute we stepped off the train. Friendly staff picked us up with a "goodie bag" filled with water and various accoutrements - and this was only the first of gifts and treats given to us. Our room was a serene haven, which was a good thing since we'd come from Tokyo (amazing, but crowded) and some of our Kyoto activities also involved crowds. Speaking of activities, the Shinmonzen provided a tour guide for a private walking tour - we never would have known about some of the city's gems without this wonderful trek. Breakfast (which comes with the reservation) was fantastic. We didn't eat any other meals there, but we are 100% positive they would not disappoint. I can't forget to mention that the staff filled our gorgeous tub and had it waiting for us after a long day of sightseeing. Every detail was special, including the art and the flower arrangements around the hotel. Here's a shout-out to one of the managers/concierges Dana, who had the best smile and attitude in the world. A thank you to the entire staff! What an extraordinary trip!

This hotel is exceptional because of the level of service and attention to detail of the staff! We have travelled all over the world and stayed at top notch hotels, but my wife and I agree that the excellence in service at Shinmonzen is second to none! They reached out ahead of time with activity suggestions, met us at our train car door, planned our whole itinerary, went through our minibar foods with us to be sure there were no allergy concerns, and just went above and beyond to make our stay special! The hotel is beautiful (a modern luxury take on a traditional Ryokan), centrally located in Gion district, and again, I just can’t say enough about the hotel team! We would definitely stay there again and recommend it without reservation!

This hotel is truly exceptional on all levels. It is beautifully designed, but yet has a warm, cozy feel. The staff is extremely attentive and helpful. A walking tour of the neighborhood is complementary and I highly recommend taking advantage of this offer! I also recommend choosing a rate with breakfast included as it is exceptional. Do yourself a favor and get the Japanese breakfast.

The hotel is located on a lovely street in Gion. The hotel itself is stunning, the service is exceptional, and the restaurant is delicious. The staff went out of their way to ensure that my husband had a memorable birthday trip. The Shinmonzen truly caters to its guests.

We stayed in two rooms and loved the authentic Japanese decor. The property is very well located in a lovely district. The restaurant was excellent - probably one of the best meals we had on the trip. Loved the Japenese breakfasts as well. Service was extremely attentive. Everything was very clean. We really enjoyed sitting outside by the river where we had impromptu sake tastings each evening. Such a lovely view and a lovely stay in general. Highly recommend.

What an absolutely amazing experience we had! We were on a family trip for my birthday and had three rooms. Each room was beautiful, immaculate and had its own character. The staff was exceptional, catering to our every need and beyond. They walked us to restaurants, introduced us to chefs. They even walked us to art galleries. They celebrated my birthday with champagne and an amazing pastry (pastry chef is outstanding). Breakfast was delicious. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the pajamas were the best. I have travelled many, many places in this world and this experience tops my list. Ideal location, hotel designed by famous architect and decor simple and comfortable. Truly memorable. I will forever hold this place and the amazing staff in my heart. The only thing I didn’t like was leaving.

This is now our favorite hotel and we have been all over the globe. The reason is that the service is flawless. We came to celebrate our daughter’s double graduation. She wanted to stay at a traditional Ryokan and I desired modern conveniences so we found this modern take on a Ryokan and it was a wonderful perfect choice. It is located in Gion which is great for walking. The rooms face a canal that flows from a river. The decor is light wood and sliding paper panels covering sliding glass doors. Very peaceful. There is in the winter a bit of a draft from the windows but the heat works great and we were comfortable. We stayed at the Urushi and Jiki rooms - the former has a wooden soaking tub. They both have seating areas and the latter has a small desk. They have small outdoor porches for when the weather is better. I love being able to open the doors and let in fresh air. The beds are very comfortable and we all slept well. It is mostly quiet except for an occasional car sound or ravens making sounds. We had a cute heron living across the canal I named Noaoki. The shower is nice but there is a large cement block in the middle that I didn’t think was necessary.
Now for the staff. They are amazing. The queen is a lady named Luna (Haruna in Japanese) who needs to have her salary doubled. She asked us our wishes before we arrived. She made sure all of our transportation was taken care of, that food allergies were respected, that we were at all times happy and entertained. It was like having a fairy godmother. We love Luna. She got us a walking tour with a wonderful Balinese man on staff named Mr. Dana. Great man with a great smile. Luna got us a meditation with a monk named Mr Ito at the Ryosokuin Temple. Amazing. She got us a tea ceremony at the Shigemori Tea House with geiko Fukuhiro and maiko Fukuyama. They prepared tea, performed and played a fun game with my kids. Luna was there to translate. So fun. She helped with restaurant reservations. The staff filled our tub with hot water, gave us treats like chilled yuzu water, handed us hand warmers on the way out, etc. Ten stars to all of them and a big thank you. Housecleaners kept everything neat and clean. Small complaint is that they rearranged personal items on the desk and would turn on a floor lamp at turndown that does not turn off with the master switch. That was it. All else was wonderful. The small restaurant was great for breakfast every day. Delicious food! We also went one night for dinner and it was good. Small nitpicks: the gluten free bread was lousy and tasted packaged (should be made in house). The chefs loudly cleaned the open kitchen during our meal (should wait until guests leave). After the very expensive meal, two of us who are not allergic were given cakes as a parting gift. It would be kind if they had also arranged gf cakes for the two of us with allergies. Luna made up for this slight by showering us with parting gifts that were very thoughtful and lovely. We were very very sad to leave and hope some day to return. Highly recommended!

This is one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in. When I booked I had read the reviews and the hotel really lived up to our expectations and more.

Our early interactions with the hotel were fantastic. The hotel planned all the activities we wanted to do well in advance (including a tea ceremony with maiko and geiko) and when I told them I’d be 20 weeks pregnant when we were arriving; they were so accomodating with everything. When we arrived, we noticed they had even arranged for non-alcoholic drinks to be put in the room for me and were always asking to make sure I was comfortable, had enough water, somewhere to sit and generally taking such good care of me!

The room was absolutely beautiful and the fusion between Japanese and modern elements was amazing. The design by Tadao Ando is so unique, and we loved admiring the beautiful artworks throughout the hotel. You could tell there was attention to detail with absolutely everything but in a very subtle way.

The breakfast was also fantastic and it was so lovely to enjoy it in our room given how beautiful the space in the room / balcony was.

The thing we were most impressed with was the service though, which was above and beyond the great service you already get in Japan. From the minute we got to Kyoto station to the minute that we left, we were so well taken care of. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The hotel sent translators with us (on about 2 min notice) to our tea ceremony and zen meditation, they took note of restaurants we wanted to try and went and put our name down in advance so we didn’t have to queue (without us even asking), and just always were there to greet us with a smile. It was like they pre-empted our every need.

Special thanks to Dana-san and Nakata-san for their amazing service and of course the whole team who were all incredible. Thank you for making the trip so special for us celebrating our belated honeymoon and my birthday (which they also of course went above and beyond for as well!)

I would recommend this place in a heartbeat and can’t wait to come back. It’s worth every penny!
