The Hoisnoya Resort is a bit off the beaten path in Kyoto. You take a small boat down the river in Arashiyama. We are frequent visitors to Kyoto, but had never stayed at Hoshinoya prior. We drove from Karuizawa and there was easy parking near the boat landing. We went just after the National Emergency for COVID was lifted so there were not many people staying at the Resort. We had a wonderful room looking out over the river. The entire property is very well designed. Service is excellent. Note we did not eat at the hotel since we met with friends in Kyoto. So I cannot comment on that, but for the hotel staff it did not seem a problem. I can certainly recommend Hoshinoya, particularly if you have been to Kyoto prior and don't want to stay in the more crowded center of town.

I’ve always wanted to stay in this legendary property and glad that I finally managed to do so post Covid. The check in via the boat is truly special and the location extremely special. It can be inconvenient to visit other parts of Kyoto but this resort is the destination in itself. The lack of an onsen makes it less perfect and there were less small treats/surprises compared to other Hoshinoya properties. But really a special experience nonetheless.

From the boat ride in to the beautiful grounds this is an experience. It is very clear that guest satisfaction is their top priority. This is a Japanese ryokan that does not disappoint. We ate there two nights for the traditional Kaiseki and it was clear they amended the menu so we would have a different experience each night. Not only was the meal stunning it was delicious.

I booked the Tanigasumi Double room at Hoshinoya as an expensive treat for my 30th birthday because I wanted to relax next to the window from the bed, as seen on their website. Unfortunately, it seems that there are more than one Tanigasumi Double, so instead of the bright room with the bed alongside the window, as seen on their website, I was placed in a room I considered a cave, with bed very far away from the window, enclosed in darkness even with all the lights on. When I was escorted into this room, I was on the brink of tears because it was such a hollow, sterile, dark, bleak room. What's more, I felt "trapped" as Hoshinoya is only accessible by boat and the restaurant was too full to eat at, so I spent my birthday night eating cold room service noodles and waiting for the boat back the next day. If you are splurging for what appears warm, beautiful light, don't reserve the Tanigasumi Double room, as you might not get the room you expected. The attached photo is around 3:30 PM at the height of summer—.

We are unable to fulfill the request as the room shown in the pictures was occupied, and we sincerely apologize for that. Although the hotel is situated on a beautiful site (even in mid February) coupled by the staff’s pleasant service, the fact that my room’s bath water’s maximum temperature was 36 Celsius made the stay very troubling to say the least!! In order to take a bath at night and in the morning, I resorted to adding boiled water from the in room coffee pot to get the bath to 37 Celsius which was still lukewarm and barely usable.
The other let down was the fact that the only on site restaurant was fully reserved in advance even though the hotel was not fully booked. The only reason I can think of is that the hotel must have let some non staying public reserve all the restaurant seats instead of allowing staying/paying guests use the restaurant. This F& B limitation was further infuriating by the fact that the only option for dinner was to go off premise which took approximately 1 hour round trip down the mountain and across the Hozu River.
In short, the overnight stay was a let down and not worth the established luxury pricing.

Food allergies not welcome!

Please be aware that they cannot accommodate own guests at restaurants and cannot accommodate food allergies at all. I was told they would not even try to accommodate.

We were told so many good things about this brand from our family friends and also Hoshinoya resorts are the only hotels my uncle stays at in Japan, so we wanted to give Hoshinoya Kyoto a try. We were amazed when we got there, it’s literally like a paradise there. We loved the beautiful nature, restaurants, temples and shops. Breakfast was served in our rooms, which was great and tasty. Hoshinoya Kyoto is definitely the best hotel/resort in Kyoto other than Aman Kyoto. I’ve never stayed at Aman Kyoto, so I can’t say for that although I’ve also heard great things about Aman Kyoto. Wish Hoshinoya Kyoto all the best. Would like to stay at their other properties one day

This is the ultimate authentic Japanese experience. We stayed one night as the cost is prohibitive, but it was worth it. The cuisine was picture perfect. Everything is just as you would imagine a perfect Japanese inn to be.

We visited Kyoto for two weeks and our stay at Hoshinoya was one of the best experiences of our trip. The hotel is stylish and very comfortable; the location is fantastic. One of the best features is the kind and helpful staff. Couldn't have been more pleased!

Nice setting by the forest. Service is good, but a bit slow. Took a long time to clean our room.
It is unfeasible to stay there and go back and forth to kyoto. Boat ride is nice but takes a long time.
What bothered the most is that the hotel is old and dirty. Hallways have not been cleaned in years. See my picture of a vase covered with dust and hot tubs have impregnated mold from the constant moist.
Hotel has no activities, no onsen, no spa etc

Thank you for your question. First of all, we are sorry about the inconvenience you faced this time. The package you found for May 5 does not include dinner and breakfast, however you can order them once you booked the package (or you can decide it upon your arrival.) We should have mentioned this option more clearly, again we are sorry for bothering you. Each price including tax and service fee is as below. Dinner: 23,760yen Breakfast: 4,514yen (Japanese style) Since our package consists of the room fee, dinner fee and breakfast fee independently, there is no difference between the package including dinner and breakfast and the one without them. Besides, if your have any other requests or question, you can ask our reservation team via e-mail anytime.
