We spent five days over the New Years at Abaca and could not find fault with the stay. The resort is small (9 rooms) which allows for very personalized service. We were met at the airport by one of the butlers and driven 20 minutes to the resort. Our villa was not facing the pool / sea but it had a private plunge pool and was quiet and secluded. The room was spacious with a sitting room area; king size bed; and huge bathroom. It was tasteful decorated with local flair and overall very luxurious.

The food was scrumptious...although there were a couple of occasions where they ran out of items. We ate all our meals but one at Abaca but I am sure you could venture out to nearby resorts if you wanted variety. There is not a lot to do in the area but the butlers arranged a city tour for us one afternoon and there was an option for island hopping/ snorkeling. Some guests also took advantage of jet skis for hire. Our main goal for the vacation was rest and relaxation and we met our objective by the infinity pool in one of the cabanas letting the staff wait upon us.

It was perfect. We would return in a heartbeat but Abaca in this version is closing in March and will be reincarnated as a 150 room hotel similar to the other resorts in the area. We are glad we were able to experience it when we did.

From Cebu’s International Airport, "I was greeted by the driver and made my way through the busy roads of Mactan Island, and 10 minutes later, uncovered the small but perfectly formed Abaca Boutique Resort. It was very private and intimate. I experienced excellent service all throughout my stay. Their rooms and amenities are beautiful. This is one of those resorts where I never leave during my visit because i know it can't find anything better outside the walls. Pool is excellent."

I would highly recommend Abaca to anyone who wants a relaxing vacation with amazing service and excellent, delicious food.

The resort itself is very clean with a great pool area. The spa facilities were also very clean and peaceful. The room itself was very spacious and luxurious. But what really made the resort stand out was the friendly and welcoming staff, amazing employees!

Great place to relax. My girlfriend and I really enjoyed the small but luxury type resort. This is a fantastic resort, in every sense. Beautifully laid out infinity swimming pool, plenty of private sun lounges and excellent for swimming. Very friendly staff there and delicious, generous meals.

When you build yourself up to something it often turns out to be a disappointment and sadly this was the case with the Abaca. I feel a little churlish writing this in the light of all the other glowing reports, but if you allow the myth to persist it will not improve. The Abaca charge top dollar so be prepared when someone says to be honest it wasn’t value for money.
The hotel is in a gorgeous spot and the views are stunning – so long as you overlook the half finished building site to the right and the gawking guests hanging over the wall at the Be resort to the left. The Be resort had a wedding on the beach one day and the deafening noise from their speakers was awful. Also looking out to seat night so long as you overlook the Ro-Ro ferry terminal unloading large trucks and the waft of diesel fumes on the air...
The grounds are lovely (so long as you don’t wander into the waste land area just before the gym).
The staff are very diligent and work hard and are very friendly, as several reviewers have said .
The Poolside villa number 2 was nice but a few niggles, the Ipod dock didn’t work the taps couldn’t be switched on without hitting the mirrors. The shower was a bit ineffectual and it was hard to rinse. This was compounded by the strange shampoo and shower gel provided they left you covered in an oily difficult to rinse slime. After day one I used my own carry along shower gel and shampoo.
The aircon was a mystery – set to a constant temperature and it didn’t go into idle mode on attaining it – it turned off – the whole unit. Not a problem except starting up again was noisy and woke you up. So that coupled with curtains and blinds that don’t close properly and a pretty uncomfortable bed, made for poor sleep quality.
The biggest disappointment was without doubt the restaurant. We were told that the chef loves a challenge, well maybe that challenge should be to ensure adequate provision of ingredients as the ethos seemed to be print a menu and then substitute at will when the provisions run out. It wasn’t like there was a throng of customers to exhaust ingredients, most evenings saw maybe 6 full tables.
We did see the chef for about an hour each night he leaned on the serving counter and then left, I think I saw him enter his kitchen maybe 3 times.
I will take some time to outline the food issues - On night one I ordered the grilled tuna with crispy asparagus and that was what was served and it was good quality and well served, The tempura style asparagus was unusual but worked well. We also ordered the beef short ribs, no complaints tasty and well cooked. The dessert – crème brûlée was pretty poor. The custard base in crème brûlée is meant to be set and not liquid, this was totally liquid and the caramelized sugar was so hard as to be impossible to eat. I am usually able to break the top of a crème brûlée by downward pressure using the bowl of a spoon, the full force of one hand did not break this armour plated crust.
Night two - The bouillabaisse was grim, (note to the chef if you serve baby clams in this dish rinse the sand out before cooking!) The lamb shank, I asked to substitute the caramelised onion mash for any other non onion mash (explaining I am not a big onion lover) I got some other mash but liberally sprinkled with the missing onions!
Night three, we ordered a repeat on night one but reversing our choices – this was served charmingly at the end on the quay; why not in the cabana I am not sure. Slight problem it was pitch dark. This time the grilled tuna came with crispy tempura cauliflower (note two to the cook – that doesn’t work the cauliflower unlike the asparagus holds water and makes the whole dish disgusting and soggy!) and a couple of sauté potatoes. The beef short ribs were excellent.
At breakfast one morning I heard one guest told we have no mango for the breakfast banana and mango pancake. This is Cebu they literally grow on trees! The local SM supermarket is 15 minutes away, they sell fruit!
It wasn’t like you could go anywhere else to eat other than the hotel either so you literally are a captive audience. By the end of night two had I been able to eat elsewhere, I would have done.
All in all a nice enough place the staff work hard at the friendliness, but it’s not the heaven on earth as described by others, or maybe we caught them on a bad week?
The spa was well appointed clean and nice but the massage was pretty average and a bit half hearted in truth. Not sure I would return as it was (very) expensive and I think I can get better value, certainly in Thailand and probably in Cebu and its environs or other parts of the Philippines.

I have been living in the Philippines for over 2 years and have travelled and stayed in many hotels here. Abaca is by far the best place to stay in the Philippines if you are after a small, relaxing place to stay. We just wanted a place to relax and unwind. This place was perfect for that.

The service is exceptional - best I have experienced. Nothing was a problem and they always noted your preferences and proactively did things to make sure it was catered to. The food was the best I have had in the Philippines. Their chef was wonderful. He made us a great cheese platter upon request.

I will definitely be back here again.

When researching where to stay in Cebu, I was debating between Abaca and more wallet-friendly places on other remote islands. We chose this because this was a clear, dominant winner according to tripadvisor ratings, and sure enough, it deserves nothing but "excellent" unless there was another category for "super excellent"

Yes, yes you probably see from other reviews that service is great but you just have to see for yourself why we're all raving about Abaca. All of the staff on premise is extremely friendly and attentive. At first I found it a little weird that everyone knew everything about you in 5 minutes -- for example, I'd tell one butler that I'm going snorkeling tomorrow and when I go to the restaurant in a few minutes for a bite, my waiter would remind me to wear plenty of sunblock and inform me of the weather. It was truly amazing how everyone was on top of our whereabouts and almost predicted what we were going to do next to serve us better. They really make sure you are well taken care of.

Also among others, another bonus is that the food at Abaca is actually quite nice (very nice breakfast!). There is a lengthy menu but if you're staying at the resort for a while, you can even ask for something different at your discretion.

We just could not have enjoyed our stay any more. When we were first planning our trip, we told ourselves we'd try the other islands next time but after this experience, we're definitely coming back to Abaca.

If one wishes to experience what it must be like to live the life of a royal, then staying at the Abaca resort may give you an indication. Abaca sets the benchmark for true Filipino hospitality and absolute dedication to customer service.

We booked a 7-night stay at the resort following a week in the hustle of bustle of Manila. Our butler (can't believe I am even using this word) collected at us at the airport, with cold aromatherapy towels and water awaiting us in the car as refreshment for a mere 15-minute journey to the hotel. The city of Mactan is still very undeveloped and you will see many make-up huts lining up the roads where vendors sell their produce. There is no denying poverty remains an issue, as in many parts of the country. But people are so warm and everywhere you go, you will always encounter a smile or a friendly hello.

The hotel is a sanctuary of peace and tranquility and from the moment of our arrival, we were given outstanding service. Your total well-being is the mantra of this hotel and the manager Glen and his staff will do whatever it takes to ensure all your needs are met if not exceeded. We stayed in a master oceanfront suite, which was absolutely massive, comprising a sleeping area, bathroom with a walk-in shower, bath, two sinks and a balcony with lounger, table and dining chairs. The rooms are decorated in a contemporary Filipino style, and eponymous to the hotel's name, tastefully accentuated with abaca furniture and bathroom items.

Breakfast and dinner are served at the adjoining restaurant, where the staff offered us our complimentary welcome drink consisting of a full bottle of sparkling wine on our first night. The restaurant, surrounded by lush greenery and the air of the gentle sea breeze, is run by Australian chef Wade Watson, whose menu is an eclectic mix of Mediterranean cuisine. Chef Wade will take the time to walk around during dinner and chat to guests about their stay and of course the food. I was impressed by this personal touch. The food - all sourced locally - was divine and there was not a single meal that was served on our table which we didn't devour. The pizzas were better than in some places in Italy, and the crispy fried pork delectable. Every day, we looked forward to our wonderful, freshly-cooked breakfast, from your typical English to waffles and blueberry pancakes, which you can either eat at the restaurant or have served poolside. And our dinners were the crowning glory to a blissfully relaxing day by the pool.

The infinity pool at Abaca is really the best I have ever experienced. The hotel uses some other cleaning procedure for the water, but it is not chlorinated so you don't come out of it with this feeling of needing to rinse. I could stay in there for hours, taking in the beautiful ocean vista. Surrounding the pool area are 5 thatched cabanas, with a generous double bed lounger and chairs to relax in. The poolside staff will regularly supply you with ice-cold lemon water, take your orders or await you by the pool with a dry towel after your swim. On our second day, I had fancied ice cream made with local fruit, which was not on their menu. The staff went out to the supermarket and bought me a tub - enough to supply me for the whole week! It was served to me in a beautiful trio of ceramic cups, each containing a scoop back at the pool. That kind of attention and service - as the famous ad slogan goes - is simply priceless.

I indulged in a traditional Filipino "hilot" massage at the spa and we also did a tour of the surrounding islands, with the boat, which can hold up to 20 people, reserved for our exclusive use accompanied by our butler. The hotel will even bring its furniture on this boat trip, so you can sunbathe and have your lunch or dinner on the island.

Our stay at Abaca will be unforgettable. The hotel staff couldn’t do enough to fulfill your needs, without their actions ever feeling contrived. We were utterly spoilt at this hotel and can only wholeheartedly endorse it to others, who are in need of pampering and quality down-time.

From the moment we stepped inside the hotel. We felt that we've just entered paradise. The aura and the ambiance of the hotel is breath taking. The staff all greeted us with their courteous and heart warming smile. All of them knew our names and especially our daughter, they treated us like royalties and at the same time they gave us our privacy. We were shocked by their efficiency, flexibility and the amount of service they provided. All of them anticipated our needs, which made their whole staff quite extraordinary and amazingly unique. By the way the hotel provided us our own personal butler which is very very convenient.

The food is awesome and they served it generously. The rooms are very spacious, clean and very well designed. I'm so thankful to the whole staff for providing our precious little daughter her needs.( The resort provided the crib, an exersaucer, sterilizer and providing our daughter her own meal). I love their spa services its rejuvenating. My husband love their bar so much with their wide variety of selections and especially the company of their staffs. He felt like he was hanging out with his friends.

On our last night, they arranged a romantic dinner for us and plus they gave us a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the staff for that lovely dinner, we really enjoyed it and cherished every moment of it.

Overall. Our stay was PERFECT, LOST FOR WORDS and all the synonymous words to AMAZING. We will surely be back soon. Once again Muchas Gracias A Todos to everybody.

With all the research done, we knew we were going to be in for a treat. After a rather long flight to Cebu, we finally set foot in abaca. abaca is about 15 minutes from the airport and a world away from what you would experience at any other resort.

Abaca is a 9 suite/villa boutique hotel with service that would make any 5-star international hotel envious. With a high staff to guest ratio, the staff are very attentive, efficient and polite. They know each guest by name, inculding our little one. I particularly liked being called "Sir Jamie" ... had a nice ring to it!

The butler service looks after all needs, whims and fancies [within reason, of course]. Dial a 3 dight number and they can arrange your breakfast by the poolside, lend you DVDs selected from a list, arrange a birthday cake, arrange a boat to go island hopping or a car to go into town to do some sightseeing/shopping.

The staff appear to be cross trained. You can expect to see the pool team deliver your room service or even serve your meals at the poolside cabanas. Everyone is serious about their service delivery.

We spent a fair bit of time at swimming pool. There are floats and other inflatable tubes available for use at the pool. A tall glass of water with a lemon wedge appears in your cabana. If you are lucky, they'll treat you to abaca's home made fruit-popsicle, ice cream and even cookies. One of the pool staff will even have a towel ready when you get out of the pool. Now, that's called service!

The food at abaca is ... to put it directly ... expect to get fat. We still think about the 600gm hand-cut Angus ribeye steak, and the roasted whole chicken in the wood fire oven. These two dishes took our breath away. The beef was juicy, tender, and "beefy" - we had this dish at least twice during our stay! The pizzas and pastas are also done very well and will keep you asking for more. By the time we finished these, we had no room for dessert. We ate all our meals at the abaca.

The rooms at abaca are simple and tastfully furnished. We had a poolside oceanfront suite to start, but were upgraded later. Our suite had a large TV with DVD player, a large toilet area with 2 sinks, bath tub and shower area. It was equipped with a King size bed and our ground floor suite had a day-lounger that could be converted to a bed for the little one. We were upgraded to the seaview pool villa which was ultra spacious, had its own pool plus outdoor shower and an iMac and a large toilet area. This room could sleep 2 adults and up to 3 young kids comfortably.

There is also a gym, kids' room and maid quarters. Great for the gym-rats and parents who want some quality time. Wifi is available throughout the resort.

Downsides? 1. there is no beach. You jump from the pool into the ocean. So if you are looking for a beach holiday with white sandy beaches for the kids to play, try another place. For us, we had the pool and that kept us happy. 2. If you are used to powerful showers like Kramer's Commando 450 shower head [in Seinfeld], the water flow here is a little low; but we are really nit-picking here.

We loved our stay here and given another beach holiday, will opt to come here again. The service was excellent and our accomodations were comfortable, affording a good nights sleep. We will definitely be back for the food!
