At long last , back to Davao City, now with friends! The hotel has improved its services since last time I was there.
Same friendly smiles from the lovely staff. They have complete toiletries now, so aside from toothbrush and toothpaste, they provide shampoo, lotion, showercaps etc in neat boxes.
They served breakfast and ala carte meals through out evening! Being a small hotel with big enough rooms is comforting! Just a few walk from hotel is the nightmarket which is as usual very organized and secured. From there we binged on grilled food, durian and durian icecream, pomelo free taste too!

Davao City is one of the most peaceful cities in the Philippines. This is partly due to Mayor Duterte's iron-fist and no-nonsense policy against criminality to promote peace & order.

So despite the recent "blast" in Cagayan de Oro and US advisory against travel to Mindanao, we attended a meeting conference in this city.

We were able to book a Standard twin bed accommodation at ALU Hotel Davao with the assistance of reviews in TripAdvisor located at Faura Street corner Roxas Ave. in the Central district. This is a newly constructed building in 2008 with the the hotel occupying the fourth and fifth floors.

Metered taxi from the airport cost approximately P170 or US$4. We were assigned a room with street view, relatively large 4x6m with cable TV, Wi-Fi, hot and cold running water and quite air-con. We found the staff helpful and very accommodating. Our room came with breakfast. However they have outsourced this service so you will have to go to an adjacent site. You work out this concern by asking for room service delivery.

For church goers, there is a church two blocks away, the Our Lady of Fatima Parish Church with daily services at 5:15 PM and almost hourly services on Sunday's. The hotel is located at the corner of two streets so getting a public transportation or taxi is not a problem. We were also able to arrange a late check-out (3:00 PM) despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked.

In general ALU Hotel Davao lives up to its vision as giving its clients "value for their money." I would certainly recommend this hotel for travelers who want affordable, centrally located, hotel with good services.

I booked their P950.00 room thru Booking.com. It comes with free breakfast and it was delivered to my room. Room is big and clean but it somewhat looks old because of the paint color (wooden theme). I requested Booking.com for a double bed instead of twin beds but the hotel still assigned me in a room with twin beds. 1 bed is even bigger for me. I think the room can accommodate 4 persons. Bed is really nice. Pillows are soft. They provided me an extra 2 pillows, free of charge. Bathroom is clean but the space between the wall and the shower curtain is just about 4 feet. You have to fit yourself in between when taking a shower or better not use the curtain and let the entire bathroom to get wet for you to have a bigger space.

Check-out is 12 noon. I checked out and left my luggage with them. When I came back at 2pm, since my time going to airport was still at 5pm, they allowed me to still use my room. I stayed there up to 5pm, still free of charge.

I paid and book for 1 extra guest, they do not provide anything, I do not know where the extra guest fee is for? When I checked I even paid for extra guest breakfast without receipt. I do not expect I will pay when checked out that I still have to pay that is why I pre- booked and paid all already.

I had a very bad experience with this hotel. From the service to its staff especially this fat female staff she is so impolite and disrespectful I stayed for 2 nights and had sleepless nights the room is full of ants and rats the cr has cockroaches. I can hear the sound from the next room. I requested for room transfer since the ac is not functioning well on my first night then this big and fat female staff is so disrespectful and hesitated to address my needs and said its the only value of the money i paid. I will never recommend this hotel to my friends.

I booked the hotel because i wanted a decent place near most tourist attractions. After checking the hotel review and going over the map, i thought Alu will be most fit for my budget and needs. My mom and I stayed there for 4 days and 3 nights.
Alu's location is very good. It is near Aldovinco shopping center, Roxas Night market, and Ateneo de Davao. There are several cafes, salons as well as turo - turo around the corner. POmelo fruit stands are also within walking distance.
The AC is good as well as the heater however the light is dim (not for studying but just right if your just watching tv or preparing to sleep). The wifi is ok.
The staff are friendly, respectful and helpful. They would assist you with your needs aas well as your baggage anytime without being asked.

Booked for a twin deluxe room for a 3 days 2 nights stay. Well at first, i was kind of hesitant because of the inexpensive rate. I was actually quite surprised when i entered the room. I didnt know it would be that comfortable. The beds are the premium types. The room has a split type air condition that really serves its purpose and the best thing about it is that it's quiet. The room has a flat-screen tv with good reception of the channels (although they only have a few channels to choose from). Shower is good. The pressure of the water is strong and it turns hot easily. The room has an adequate size wardrobe and a portable luggage space where you can keep your belongings. It has a desk with a chair, mirror, telephone and the basic toiletries - towels, shampoo, soap, tissue paper. Most importantly, they serve complimentary breakfasts.
One drawback though was that when we left our food one night, it was already full of ants. Well, that's just a minor issue.
Overall, we were able to sleep comfortably. Traveling within the area is not a problem as it's nearby to a lot of spots specifically malls and the famous pasalubong center. i was allowed to check in earlier than the standard time. they have an elevator so bringing in heavy luggage is really not a problem. Front desk staff could be more friendlier, in my opinion.

Dear Backpackingcouples We appreciate you taking the time to review us on Tripadvisor and for sharing how you enjoyed your stay during your recent trip to Davao City, Philippines. From our comfortable room and beds, to our complimentary breakfast each morning, we strive to provide everything our guests need to have an exceptional stay. On the other side, our apologies of the ants that make your stay disgusting, we have already put some notice inside the guestrooms that food should be consumed at the guest lounge area at the 6th floor, again, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you again when travels return you to Davao City, Philippines Sincerely Randy Ibot General Manager

When you get to the airport, get your own taxi! Don't go with the vultures waiting outside, they will rip you off.

Alu hotel has all you need and the staff are very very nice. Good busy area too.

They can assist you getting taxis, along with things to do in Davao.

Taxis in Davao are very cheap, so don't think twice when flagging them down.

The food was fine, and again the staff are very helpful.

I would stay here again no worries.

The place doesn't look so attractive from outside, well, not even te inside. But if you're a budget traveller who isn't interested in staying at Dorm type Inns, this is the next best thing. the prices are pretty reasonable. The rooms are good, the AC works fine and the bathroom is not too big but comfortable enough. Breakfast is inclusive once you avail the room. Food is okay. it's served in the room since they don't have a restaurant in the hotel itself.

Location wise, it's in the heart of the city and close by to banks, certain souvenir shops and markets where you can taste some local fruits at a pretty low price.

It is a bit far from the adventure trips though like Mt. Apo and Samal Island.

Let me first disclose that we got the Standard Double room for 50% off (Php 750 instead of the published rate of Php 1,500) because we booked it when they had the Kadayawan Promo (still ongoing until August/Sept, I think).

PROs:
Location: ALU Hotel is near everywhere (Aldevinco, Lyndon's, Madrazo Fruit Stands, etc.) and very accessible to cabs and jeepneys (one way goes south; the jeepneys across go north - GMall, Abreeza, SM Lanang, Paradise Beach, etc.; walk towards Aldevinco and you can find jeepneys there that virtually go everywhere).

Amenities: The room is great! The bed is divine and the sheets (comforter) made it hard for us to get up the next morning. The heater works any time of the day, and we didn't have any problems with the toilet not functioning as it should. There was a big wardrobe on the corner of the room and a few hangers (you can request additional hangers at the reception if you need more). TV has standard cable channels, a dresser wide enough for our toiletries, and a split-type aircon which didn't break down.

Food: So so. Not exactly a sumptuous fare, but gets the job done of breaking your fast and as fuel for early morning activities.

Service: The staff responded to our requests fairly quickly. They are courteous and accommodating but never intrusive. (We haven't tried asking them for recommendations, though, because we have our itinerary down pat.)

Others: During our visit there, Davao was experiencing daily brownouts lasting at least 1 hour a day. In ALU Hotel we did not "experience" that since their generator is working fine and our cool room gave us respite from the summer heat and may have helped us not die of sunstroke. Also they have a water cooler on every floor near the elevator and we could get water - hot or cold - any time of the day. The Wi-fi connection is average - we couldn't connect to it over the weekend but when there were fewer guests on our side (or was it only just us?) we were finally able to use it.

CONs:
Bathroom: It is really small and half of the bath area is occupied by a building column and I can't turn left or right without hitting the wall, the post, the shower head or the shower curtain. Which is a design flaw really since there is so much empty/unused space inside the room.

Sound/Noise:
* Day 3: We can hear the guest next room snoring (I woke up at 6am to pee and the guest's very loud snoring kept me from falling asleep again).
* Day 4: They had an event going on that day on the 6th floor and they had a videoke machine on. We were directly below them (5th floor) so imagine how deafening their singing was that we were unable to catch some zzz's prior to our activity that night. The hotel staff could've just warned us so we can adjust our schedule - or the hotel should've had better soundproofing for their function rooms.
* Day 5: We can hear the guests next door talking late at night, loud enough that we can butt in on their conversation.
* All throughout our stay: We can hear guests on the hallway/near the elevator, and we can hear squeaking and grating sounds made by furniture being moved above us all hours of the day.

All in all, our stay with ALU Hotel was great, but this was primarily because we only paid Php750 per day with 2 sets of breakfast every morning (and we stayed there for ~10hrs a day for 5 days to escape the infernal heat outside). If it weren't for that, and we had to pay the published rate of Php1,500, we might have looked for another hotel with similar amenities and location, and/or we might have found ALU Hotel lacking in some aspects or a tad overpriced for two backpackers on vacation.

So, 4 stars (Very Good) for the priced we paid, and only 3 stars (Average) for the full price.
