The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is the embodiment of both a special time and a special place. For well over a century, this remarkable hotel - known simply as 'The E&O' to generations of travellers - has stood as a testament to the grand elegance of the British colonial era. In many ways, it has also come to represent Penang itself; its story inextricably woven into the island's history, its traditions an indelible part of many a traveller's treasured memory, its name synonymous with the magical island once known as The Pearl Of the Orient.

First of all I want to thank the staff at Java Tree restaurant where we had dinner in order to celebrate my birthday. They walked the extra mile to make it a special evening for me! The overall experience of our stay was a good one, we really enjoy being guests at the E&O, but there are still - as the last time we were at the E&O - two things that need improvement: 1) The coffee service at Sarkies is still an issue! As a coffee addict I cannot wait 20 minutes to get my first cup! 2) The cocktail hour at Cornwallis need improvement, too. There are too many noisy children and crying babies (at a place where alcohol is served!) and too many tourists that simply don't obey the rules (turn your mobile phone to a silent mode, dress decently) - and the staff (who is very well educated and very attentive) does not say a word.

This is our 4th stay at the heritage wing at the E&O and we will continue to come back. My wife and I had our wedding ceremony here and now we have brought our 6 month old son here. The hotel holds a special place for us. We had a fantastic room and the service is always 1st class. See you next time!

From the minute we stepped in the victoria annex, we were greeted by the warmth of rustic and nostalgic characteristics of the E&O. We arrived earlier and were invited to the planters lounge on the sixth floor for complimentary drinks while waiting our room to be ready. The room was a spacious king suite on the corner facing Penangs coastline . We walked to the heritage wing and although the architecture stood out, the Victoria Annex suited our taste due to its modern style. The E&O sets the service standard highly and made our stay worthwhile and one to remember. Thanks to everyone making us feel at home!

The Eastern & Oriental Hotel certainly exudes a classic charm with its elegant appearance, but unfortunately, the upkeep doesn't quite match up to its grand facade. While the reception staff were exceptionally friendly and efficient during check-in and out, the bell service lacked enthusiasm and required prompting for assistance with luggage. Staying in the Heritage Wing Deluxe Seaview suites was a mixed experience. The rooms were spacious and boasted breathtaking views of the serene sea, offering a relaxing atmosphere. The daily replenishment of complimentary beverages, including beer, was a thoughtful touch. However, the constant noise from events hosted in the ballroom below was a considerable disturbance. Regrettably, the bathroom fell short of expectations. Issues such as peeling ceilings in the shower area, a malfunctioning shower head, and prolonged delays in getting hot water for bathing were disappointing, indicating a need for upgrades and maintenance. On the brighter side, the hotel's International buffet breakfast was a standout. The food was served piping hot and offered a fantastic variety. Surprisingly, some dishes even surpassed the quality of recommended street food found online. This was a welcome contrast to a negative dining experience outside the hotel, where I encountered unhygienic conditions and pricey, unsatisfactory food cooked and served by foreign workers. In summary, while the Eastern & Oriental Hotel possesses a classic allure and efficient reception services, the inconsistencies in maintenance, noise disturbances, and bathroom issues could detract from an otherwise enjoyable stay. The standout breakfast experience, however, was a definite highlight amid some other disappointing aspects.

Originally we were going to leave out Penang because we prefer nature and beaches to cities. But it was a good contrast between Pangkor and Langkawi. We ended up loving our stay. {Apart from the traffic!]. Read Twan Eng's books whilst on Holiday and enjoyed seeping up the history and atmosphere. Loved China House [cakes] and its sister store (near the fire station). There was an exhibition of Wong's glass work and visited his Art and Garden at Jalan Teluk Bahang - a lovely 50 minute drive to the north of Penang Island. Stunningly beautifl and a shop where you can smaller glass items. The E & O features in so many novels it was a "must see" experience. We stayed in the Heritage Wing. Our suite was spacious and quiet. Bed extremally comfortable. Agree with other guests there was a shortage of storage space and the bathroom lay-out was strange. Excellent pool. Breakfast in the Palm Lounge and cocktails in Cornwallis were good. Good location. Concierge extremely helpful and friendly. Indeed all the staff were good. Receptionists beautifully efficient and helpful. Brilliant time! Thank You!

I only went to the O&E hotel for their High Tea. It was superb! Hotel has a wonderful view of Panang Harbor. The hotel was recommended to me for dining experience by another hotel I was staying at:). Plus a friend had recommended it for breakfast and the view it provided.

The hotel first didn't find our reservation, then upgraded us to a huge suite. Very elegant hotel with loads of classic atmosphere. Very comfortable beds. Perfect seafront location. Great breakfast, great lounge offer. Only drawback: Plenty of families with very noisy kids. A hotel of this calibre and size should have a separate family offer.

You can't dispute the oppulence and grandeur of this hotel which harks back to a bygone age. However whilst the rooms are large and spacious, they are somewhat lacking in practicalities. Our suitcases were piled on top of each other because of lack of storage (for clothes and suitcases). And there was only one practical plug for charging purposes, so had to move the kettle to the floor). The bathroom taps were installed incorrectly (hot was cold) and the patio furniture was uncomfortable. We also didn't know about the free mini bar until we were leaving. Don't get me wrong, we really enjoyed our stay. The breakfast team in Planters were exceptional; a really nice way to start the day. We loved the pool area, the hotel was in a great location, and we slept well. But for such a renowned hotel, I just think there's room for some improvement.

The hotel saw fit to stick us in rooms facing the main road (801 & 802), and the lack of soundproofing means that throughout the night and into the early hours, I could hear not just traffic trundling by the hotel but also music, midnight speedsters, sirens at 2am, honking, and banging noises at 7am. I did not get a wink of sleep, which is the basic purpose of a hotel room. I left the hotel disappointed and unsatisfied that despite paying E&O prices, it was an uncomfortable stay. The hotel is indeed beautiful, but I feel this 1 star review is necessary because the management needs to address this. I see that other reviewers have mentioned the noise/lack of soundproofing, but it appears nothing has been done. This is an issue which is in their power to fix by changing the windows, but they haven't actioned it. It was my 2nd visit here. I won't be back.
