I ate here with my Chinese hosts who had booked it for an important business dinner, sating it was a famous Russian restaurant in Harbin. I was delighted with the outcome. The meal and setting were fantastic. We had caviar, steak, goose liver, and many more dishes. We sat at a rectangular table and each dish was brought to us individually. Although we had lots of cutlery set in front of us, there did not seem to be much relationship between the food and what was used. In fact we often reused cutlery for the next dish. A very enjoyable evening.

We stayed in the Modern Hotel Harbin and in the penthouse suite for 4 nights during January 2019. The hotel reflects both age and history. It is very centrally located on Central Avenue which is a pedestrian only walkway and close to almost everything. The service quality was actually very good. From reservation till check out, we did not experience any issues. The concierge (Mr. Li I think) on the first night we checked in was also very welcoming by showing us around the hotel, including rooms on the third floor stayed by famous people, how to get around Harbin and briefing us on nice local attractions and restaurants. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay for our first trip to Harbin.

Built by the Russians during the occupation. Hotel has seen better days, but is full of character. Service is very good and the hotel is clean. The breakfast is not so good, served in the European style restraint, the only European food is bacon and eggs. coffee instant and the orange juice isn't juice..

My mother told me that the brightest memories of her youth are associated with Modern. My sister and I were very excited to be able to get a room at the hight of the tourist season. There is no glamor of the 1930s-40s any more, but it is easy imagine what it was like in the past. The hotel management is making great efforts to preserve the history of the hotel that reflects the history of Harbin. Even if you are not staying here, step in for a cup of tea and taste the signature icecream. The durian flavor was my favorite. Check out the old photographs. The hotel staff is professional and couteous. I would love to stay here again on my next visit to Harbin.

Same address as Hotel Modern. We checked through TA and couldn't find any reviews. We couldn't start a new listing because the page was "on holiday" as per TA, thus we decided to type our comments here since hotel and restaurant are linked. We walked past Modern Coffee & Restaurant (马迭尔冷饮厅)a few times before deciding to dine there tonight (12 May 2017). From 2002 till now, we have never tried western food whenever we travelled to China. There weren't many western food restaurants to begin with. We were attracted to the nightly live performance at Modern's premises and also the lavishly decorated interior. Note that the performer faced us (the passersby) and that was WHY we were captivated by the performance. Stay away from this restaurant at all cost!!! For the past 8 years (I think) I've been reviewing, never once have I given any merchant one circle rating (if memory did not fail me). Note we are NOT comparing Modern's food and service with those at Morton's (Mandarin Oriental Hotel Singapore) Singapore. Positive points 1. The interior decor was nice by China standard. 2. Conveniently-located. 3. The medium-rare Sirloin Steak was not bad. 4. Russian Borsch passed. 5. Russian Salad passed. Negative points 1. My partner's Rib-eye was very tough 2. Pumpkin soup had too much "milk" or "cream" in it 3. When we arrived at the restaurant at 8.10pm, we asked the waitress when the last order would be and she said 9.30pm. At about 10 mins to 9pm, when my partner finished the beer, waiter came twice (not once) to chase us to pay up. Literally driving us away when we finished our food and drink. 4. When taking order, waiter did not ask if we had wanted our beef steak medium rare or well done. 5. This is a high end restaurant, waiter also did not ask who was taking which soup or dish. 6. Soup did not come with bread and we had to order. 7. Before we could finish our salad, soup came; even before we could finish soup, our beef steaks came. We felt we were going through a food relay. 8. What kind of live music when the performer's back faced us perpetually? Was the employed musician of the restaurant more interested in entertaining its customers or advertising for the restaurant to passersby. 9. Besides being rushed to finish our meal, we were rushed to pay our bill. Best part came, a meal that was closed to RMB 400 (note that our delicious lunch today was only RMB 76 and it was not only more delicious but also cheaper than Modern, one meal at Modern equals to 5 meals at Mao Mao毛毛熏肉大饼. Even our meal at the well-known chain, Oriental Dumpling 东方饺子王was only RMB 130) and we had to walk to the cashier to pay our bill. Huh? Bill was not even brought to our table for payment. 10. At the cashier, no sweets. Even a low-end restaurant popular amongst the locals (Mao Mao) had a bowl of sweets. 11. On our way out, no one thanked us. We had originally wanted to remember Harbin fondly with a good meal here and in the end felt ripped off and pissed off after eating at Modern.

Excellent location, reasonable price, good restaurant. Unfortunately there was quite heavy odor in the room. The hotel staff do not speak English, even receptionists, but they are very friendly and with some efforts from both sides you can communicate.

The hotel room was small and it looked (in a bad way) the age of 100 years that the hotel has. One of the walls had green stains, like moho. Second floor under refurbishment, so it was dusty, very dirty. Consider yourself lucky if you find the right people in the reception who speak English. Breakfast buffet was OK, but small compared with other hotels supposedly in the same category. Swimming pool under refurbishment, of course no warning was given about this prior to my booking. Despite that it is mentioned in their website, they told me there was no gym (after it took me some time to explain them what a gym is). Internet was free but sluggish. It looks like a joke when this hotel is called "modern". Far from that in the practice. In a few words, pick up other hotels that you already know: Holiday Inn, Ibis,...this one is not worth it.

This hotel in the middle of the "European" section of Harbin is probably more than 100 years old (the date of actual opening seems somewhat in dispute), is elegant (wonderful wood paneling), clean, comfortable, and friendly. I cannot say how it compares with other hotels in the city since this is the only one in which I have stayed, but I wil certainly reeturn to it. Very good breakast. Other facicities (resturant, pool), though I did not have time to use them.

I was in a conference in Dalian, China and wanted to visit Harbin for the weekend. I stayed in this Harbin hotel for one night. Before rating the hotel proper I want to warn tourists about the restaurant in this hotel. I ate seafood in its restaurant the night of my stay. Midnite I woke up with diarrhea and vomiting. This went on till morning when I checked myself for emergency in the Harbin Medical School Hospital where I was given intravenous treatment. I was so weakened I could not stay in the conference after I took the bullet train back to Dalian. About the Modern Hotel it is like I was in China in the 90s. Chinese tourist industry between the 90s and 2015 was like night and day. Out of the original hotel building the current hotel occupies a section at the end. That means it was either a storage place or servants quarters, with facility to match. I am a sucker for history. I should have checked with Tripadvisor first instead of listening to a cab driver. There are many similarly priced hotels within walking distance to the pedestrian Zhongyang Main Street. ibis being one.

Older, charming hotel with lots of history this hotel is set right on the pedestrian street with all of the shops. Rooms seem to be different grades. We were in the lower cost rooms which was fine for 2 nights. Heaters in the room are very warm. Be prepared. Rooms were basic but clean. Other rooms of main building looked to be nicer and were split level. Breakfast was Chinese. Not terrific considering it was about $10. Staff were friendly enough. We hired a driver referred to us by a friend, with a van for entire weekend. Quite pricey 2000rmb total for the weekend but rooms were reasonably priced. All in all a decent experience.
