We really enjoyed our 3 nights at the Shangrila. Following some negative reviews about the hotel we went thinking it wouldn’t be that great but actually it was. River views were beautiful, rooms were a little smaller as mentioned but they were really comfortable and warm. The staff in the club lounge were excellent and breakfast up there was very decent. There was a buffet and you could order off the menu too, about 15 different items made to order. Couldn’t fault it! The evening drinks and food was also good quality and very generous. Didn’t eat in the main restaurant as club lounge met our needs. All the staff were excellent and many spoke good English, which was helpful if you have poor Chinese, like me. So yes the hotel is a bit dated but everything else more than made up for it. Having been to Harbin twice, I liked the location as it was well positioned to get across to the ice festival (10 minutes by car) but also you can walk along the river into town (30 minutes). Go with managed expectations on the modernity of the hotel and you will enjoy it I’m sure

This hotel is nothin better than a Chinese 3 star hotel. Service is OK but the rooms are extremely small for China....comparable to HK size. There is no separate shower and there is only a hand shower and crappy shower curtain in the small bath tub. Completely unacceptable. The food, service and ambiance at the breakfast was like a cafeteria. The common areas of the hotel were tired and shabby. Frankly it's just crap, do not bother wasting your money. Stay at another hotel if you want to be in the city. If you want a good luxury experience then stay at the JW Marriott across the river and take taxis wherever you need to go. DO NOT STAY AT THIS RIP OFF CHINESE QUALITY HOTEL. I complained to Shangri La and they have done absolutely noting about it. This is the second time I have stayed at one of their hotels and it will be the last. I don't know how they have the front to call themselves a luxury hotel brand when they have properties like this.

Stayed 3 nights in the room facing the main road. The room is below our expectation of 5 star hotel and Shangri-La hotel brand name. The room is outdated style and smaller than the average room of 4/5 star hotel that we ever stayed. The location is relatively closed to Sun Island Ice and Snow Festival, but quite far away from Central street, a famous pedestrian-only cobblestone where we ate and shop at some of hundreds of stores & restaurants. The staff in breakfast room was helpful and quite polite. What we love was the breakfast menus. They were suited to our taste, mostly delicious.

I’ve been to a few other shangrila hotels and I would say the Shangrila hotel in harbin maybe a little below the tier of the other shangrila hotels I’ve been to in terms of overall quality and ambiance. However, i would definitely still recommend to stay here if visiting harbin. Rooms and service are great. Just don’t expect everyone to be speaking fluent english. Location is good as its just a short ride fron the ice activities and to the city central. If you want really near the central street then this might not be the place as i dont thinking on a winter season is wise from this hotel. I do find the consistency of the room service menu needs to be improved. I ordered exactly the same fish in consecutive nights and found that the dish appeared to be prepared differently.

Came to harbin to visit ice and snow festival ... impressive! The shangri-la is probably the most convenient hotel in terms of location, situated next to the songhua river. Service was excellent. Hotel is a bit tired; i recommend room overlooking river. Rooms were clean and functional. With both air purifiers and humidifiers installed. Limited english TV channels; and the usual news censorship on CNN when broadcasting news not favorable to the govt. Very annoying! But hotel has no control over this. Wifi was extremely slow and consequently working from hotel was challenging, at best. We used the horizon club on 15th floor where the staff was professional and attentive; however breakfast was NOT what one expects from five stars. Opportunity to improve both quality and selection. We also had lunch in lobby lounge ... excellent service and surprisingly good english by staff (we later found out our waitress was from singapore :-) ) Overall, pleasant stay. Thanks to the staff. Frank
