The property is situated slightly out of town, is off the main road and up an unpaved driveway. Which makes it nicely quiet and away from everyone. The villas by the river provide an idyllic morning experience when you get up. The slow boats making their presence felt every morning, together with the birds make it a joy to have breakfast on the verandah. Walking in and out is a soft challenge, but the quietness is worth is.
Absolutely gorgeous....unspoiled Mekong Riverviews....until you get within the estate you have no idea how breathtaking this hidden gem is....we were lucky enough to meet the owner and very friendly staff here....rooms facing the Mekong River are just the BEST!!! I highly recommend this place for groups as well as each Villa has 2 bedrooms or more very spacious as well. Estate is located not far away from the city excellent for relaxation and time off to just enjoy yourself by the pool and connect with your loved ones. So tranquil and zen. Definitely taking a River boat for the sunset is a MUST!!! I will definitely do it again
The best thing about this place was the evening views across the Mekong, we stayed in the Jade Apartment which was ok, we were somewhat disappointed with the very damp, musty smell in the bedroom, and the shower room is very dark with no natural light, we also had problems with the mosquitos, being so close to the river and the net on the bed wasn’t very effective! We found it very noisy, too many boats on river with very noisy engines, in addition to the cockerels crowing from 4am every morning, not as peaceful as we were expecting, plus the property is near a karaoke club and the music at the weekend was terrible, so we checked out 3 days early and found a much quieter hotel so we could get some sleep! The breakfast was ok, but boring after a week so we had breakfast in town which was great, the property requires a Tuk tuk to get into town but easily available. Overall we were disappointed with our stay here, there are so many other places in LP that are more comfortable and quiet.…
My husband and I spent 4 days in Mekong Estate as part of our trip around Laos and Cambodia. We really liked Mekong Estate and had a wonderful time in Luang Prabang, but we believe the high price is not really justified. Below a list of the things we liked and disliked so you can assess for yourselves. We adored the garden and the view over the Mekong. The small villa (we stayed in Bamboo Villa) was really spacious thought a bit dark. Breakfast was served directly in the room, which was convenient, and the quality was excellent (everything was freshly made and you could select fresh fruit, different fruit juice, eggs, potatoes, etc.). Another plus is the kindness of the hosts. The managers were always available directly on their cell phone and since there is no reception desk, we were given a small cellphone to call them if needed. There were, however, a number of things we thought were not up to the standard of the price we paid per night. First, the mattress of the bed was terribly hard and uncomfortable. Other hotels of similar standards in Laos and Cambodia had more comfortable beds than this hotel. Moreover, the mosquito net was not in a very good shape, which is important since the beautiful garden brings about mosquitoes. Another important point is that the hotel is located outside the old part of Luang Prabang and it is not as close by as explained by the hotel. We went every day to the old town by bike and it took us some 10/15min by bike. Not sure if it is walkable distance really since a portion of the way is on the main route without sidewalks. For us, this was fine as we had planned to bike around and enjoyed the ride, but I think it would be important to clarify this in Booking and other sites. Related to this, a good point for the hotel is that they lend you bikes for free (some other hotels in town do). Note however, that the free bikes provided by the property are in very poor shape (flat tires, some don’t have locks or carry on), and are not assigned for the duration of your stay, so if you stop in the way to fix your bike (like we did the first day for like 30 min) you may be benefitting someone else :). Finally, the Villa we stayed in (Bamboo) could use some dusting and refreshing as some parts of it (the toilet and terrace, for example) are quite old. …
Mekong Estates is a cluster of stylish villas overlooking the Mekong River a mile or so from the historic parts of Luang Prabang. Our villa was called Jade and it was lovely and spacious with a large veranda overlooking the river. The grounds are really lovely and there’s a 25 metre pool which was perfect for exercise or sunset drinks. A maid comes to the villa in the morning to make breakfast in our own kitchen which we enjoyed on our veranda. The manager also come every morning to check on our needs and was extremely helpful. He arranged a driver to take us to the waterfalls and an boat excursion to the Pak Ou caves. Both trips we really enjoyed. The location of the accommodation does mean taking tuk tuks into town but this never presented a problem as tuk tuks are easy to get. As to the access road it is a dirt track with chickens, dogs, two local shops and is certainly characterful as others have said. But again not a problem. In summary for the price of just a room in One of the more centrally located hotels you get a fabulous villa by the river. So for us it turned out to be the perfect place to stay. On the negative side there are no onsite facilities except the pool as it is not a hotel. As for improvements I think management should think about putting hammocks on the villa verandas which would make this place even better. …
