We had read so many good things about Ali's Downtown, but after staying here for one night, we really don't understand why. Shortly after arriving, we had set out for a walk to the center. The very nice receptionist had told us that she was only there until 4 pm, which was fine with us as we got a key. In the evening, we wanted to shower but there was no water! Not for the shower, not for the sink, not for the toilet (expect for a big bucket in the shower, from which the ladle went missing during the evening - was I supposed to scoop the water with my hands?). Well, we dealt with it for the night, but couldn't someone at least have warned us? If someone just had told us that there was no water in the house, that would have been fine. We would have probably gone elsewhere. But just not telling us, that was kind of odd. I should also mention that there are 2 elderly women living in the house. But as we hadn't been introduced to them, we weren't sure who they were or why they were there. In the evening we couldn't ask them about the water as they had already gone to bed when we realized. Other than that, the room is very basic and the bed has a big dent in the middle (just a worn out mattress). There was only one pillow with a pillow case on it and the closet is full with the family's stuff. The place didn't seem dirty, but the bathroom smelled a bit of urine - no wonder if there is no water to flush. And as a side remark: although we arrived and left by bus, there was no free pick up or drop off from the bus station offered. We had to take taxis both ways. The only reason, why the rating is 2 and not 1, is because of the people - the receptionist was very friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. But we would not recommend a stay there.

This was a great place to stay on my arrival in El Salvador, I emailed and arranged a transfer from the airport (which I was happy about as there were delays and I only cleared customs after midnight) and I was shown straight to a comfy bed and slept. The next day Edwin gave me a map and told me a few things to see, also said that many days they offer a free walking tour but I was too late for that day, so I just went exploring. It was an easy walk into the centre of town. That afternoon he helped me to arrange the rest of my trip around nye and gave me recommendations for places to stay (the one I am currently staying at is lovely) and ways to get to where I needed to go, which was über helpful. He has travelled a lot and knows how to help. And he speaks excellent English too. When I was leaving I was even given a free drop off at the bus station!

Stayed here for a night, the people are great! A family stays here and all are very friendly. The young speak English but elders speak only Spanish. They have very nice small garden and a huge Avocado tree in the backyard, I spotted at least 6 different species of birds from my bedroom on these trees. The owner of the house himself is a tour guide and organizer as well, and you have added advantage if you want to go around in CA4 countries. Pickup-drop for airport is available on request. Breakfast is included is yummy and it is home made...
