Travelers' Choice
No picture of Machu Picchu can prepare you for seeing it with your own eyes. Perched high in the Andes, it is one of few places in the world that can be described as truly unmissable. It’s on everyone’s travel wish list, attracting a million visitors each year. But there’s only one way to see it in style: by staying at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. When we say we’re one of a kind, we mean it. Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel that sits at the entrance of the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. For years we have been the unofficial gateway to the Inca world, inviting our guests to explore with unrivalled access and expert guidance. While most visitors to the citadel endure a winding bus ride from Aguas Calientes, our snug retreat is a few footsteps away. Wake before sunrise and be the first through the gates. The mountains look magnificent emerging from a thick cloak of mist, and Machu Picchu is stunning in solitude. Stop, breathe and soak it all in.

The most positive surprise in a long time. The structure almost looks like a shack. But the rooms are actually great. The location is perfect. And the service is fantastic. Our highlight was lunch in the garden. And Machu Picchu is a true highlight.

This trip was a long time in the making and we wanted to make sure it was unforgettable. Sanctuary Lodge was worth every cent and it’s proximity to the citadel made the experience what we wanted it to be, unforgettable. We were able to visit Machu Picchu twice during our stay. We literally walked out the front doors and into Machu Picchu. On our second day, we entered at 6am and we were literally the only people there. We were able to take amazing pictures without the crowds. This was only possible because we didn’t have to take a bus up to the citadel. So worth it! The best part of staying at this hotel is due to its proximity to Machu Picchu but the experience at the hotel is amazing and luxurious. We had such an amazing time relaxing and in complete awe of our surroundings. The service was excellent, the accommodations were perfect, the food was great and the staff was amazing. Every single thing we needed was taken care of for us. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was made available to us at any time regardless of posted times. The spa service was available and it was amazing. We were invited to the Pisco Sour class held at the bar and instructed by Giovanni. Giovanni was great and the class was so much fun. The delicious potatoes served during the class were to die for, so yummy. We even ordered them again for lunch the next day. It was not on the menu but they made it happen for us. When we visit Machu Picchu again we will stay at Sanctuary Lodge. What an unforgettable experience, thank you Sanctuary Lodge. The Carvajal Family

Excellent stay and warm, welcoming service at the Sanctuary Lodge! The location is also unbeatable, right in front of the entrance of Machu Picchu. Guests can enter before everyone else at 6am and watch the sunrise over the Citadel, which is almost a spiritually beautiful experience. It's expensive and the rooms are not grand (it is just a lodge), but completely worth if it is within your budget. The location, access, and quality of service (in that order) is unbeatable for Machu Picchu. I personally would not stay elsewhere when visiting. I'd like to thank Cesar Paredes, a Front Representative of the Sanctuary Lodge, who always seemed to be 10 steps ahead of all the guests' needs, who went above and beyond his duties to make sure we were happy and taken care of, and whose inherent and intuitive customer skills were a big part of the success of our Machu Picchu experience. Mr. Parades is a tribute to The Sanctuary, Belmond, and Peru.

Peru is now the 28th country I’ve visited and I’ve been to many places incredible places in the world but I’ve never felt this compelled to write a review. Traveling in the middle of a pandemic is an odd thing so we ended up being the only ones at our hotel at the Sanctuary Lodge here in Machu Picchu. My best friend and I were getting instruction on how to make the best Pisco Sour by our bartender Elias. It was fascinating learning all of these Peruvian customs and Incan traditions as well as some of their language. The food was so incredible that we wanted to speak to the chefs we asked if they could come out and the two gentlemen’s names were Jaime and Washington. Having these guys come out and share their stories with us with the coolest thing ever and I feel like it was such a unique experience because we were the absolute only ones at the hotel and it was so nice of them to come keep us company. And if getting to know these Peruvian gentleman wasn’t cool enough we got to see us we got to know the most amazing receptionist named Maryory. The night with these truly amazing and kind people was one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It is one thing to travel to incredible places but it is another to get to know the lives of people who are living on the opposite side of the planet. It is truly an evening I will never forget and I will never forget their kindness towards me and my best friend Jeff. I would Recommend this hotel 10 out of 10 times to anyone not only because of the incredible location next to Machu Picchu but mostly because of the wonderful people that work there. I can’t wait to plan my trip back to say hi to the mini family that we created.
