This is an old establishment (and if I’m wrong then it very much looks old) away from the City Centre and is a budget rate that attracts many in an otherwise expensive city but you get what you pay for here.
Having said that I didn’t have a problem here with a one night stay being a 5 pm arrival and a 6am departure.
Arrived from Changi airport T3 by train to nearby Paya Labar station which took about one hour all up included some wait time, change train at Tanah Merah station and short walk from station to Hotel. Had large wheeled luggage and small check in bag and found it workable for this type of transfer. However….if you’re a bit elderly or incapacitated, it’s raining or that hot Singapore sun is beating down on a humid day you may need to adjust. I took a taxi back the next morning as Grab was too slow to respond paying SGD $24 all up which the Hotel phoned on a moments notice and that took around 30 minutes all up but was early morning with a prompt taxi arrival after phone call and no traffic.
Hotel is in a good area for food options which was a “great local food”experience at a budget price. The options for having a drink were very limited and not so appealing. This appears to be a bit of a Muslim / Indian dominated area and is something that appealed to me providing a local people experience to a western tourist.
Good bus transport options towards the City along Geylang Rd and you return by bus along Sims Ave, very doable and cheap.
Staff were helpful but don’t have anyone to specially mention like the many other Reviewers for this Hotel, if you know what I mean.
Pool looked ok but I didn’t use it. Room was very basic and but functional and good size. Has cold water drinking tap installed in bathroom. Didn’t think the cleaning was the best and could do with a good spring clean but more to the point, has probably already reached its use by date and needs a major renovation.
All in all, it’s a budget priced hotel with a location that would appeal to the more active, adventurous type who want a local cultural experience located out of the City.
I would return another time.

The twin bedroom was spacious for someone like me, and although the hotel is older, it was clean, quiet, and well-equipped with essentials like a hair dryer, iron, and water—thanks to the attentive housekeeping team. As I was there primarily to sleep, it met my needs perfectly at a very reasonable price.
The location is also excellent: near a bus stop, malls, and food stalls, with Paya Lebar MRT station just a 10-minute walk away. Overall, I was super satisfied with my stay!
Both receptionists exhibited a high level of professionalism, efficiently handling the check-in process with a warm and welcoming demeanor. They were knowledgeable about the hotel amenities, local attractions, and readily offered helpful information to ensure I had a comfortable stay.
What stood out most was their genuine friendliness and willingness to go the extra mile. Whether it was providing recommendations for nearby restaurants, assisting with transportation arrangements, or addressing any inquiries I had, they did so with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to enhance my stay.
Moreover, their attention to detail was commendable. They ensured that all necessary information was communicated clearly, and any requests or preferences were accommodated promptly. This personalized approach created a sense of hospitality that made me feel valued as a guest.
The efficiency and courtesy displayed by these receptionists truly set a positive tone for my entire stay. It's evident that they take pride in their roles and understand the importance of creating a positive first impression. Their exemplary customer service skills contribute significantly to the overall reputation of Hotel 81 Tristar.
In conclusion, the exceptional service provided by these two hotel receptionists significantly contributed to the overall enjoyment of my stay at Hotel 81 Tristar. I commend them for their professionalism, friendliness, and dedication to ensuring a memorable guest experience.
The management team was very helpful and polite. Special thanks to Ms Timmy at the reception as she did a great job going out of her way to assist us with our needs. The Manager was so considerate with our late flight on the day of checkout and gave us few more hours to checkout.
House keeping and cleaning service was good.
We suggest to upgrade the worn out furnitures and some high dusting from time to time on the cupboards.
The proximity to restaurants, bus station and shops was helpful for us.
Chose it because it also has a pool but pool really needs cleaning or filtration equipment needs to be used properly. Pigoens bathe in pool, area could do with netting.
Hotel is a bit far from MRT for small kids unless you have pushchair. MRT area has plenty of food and drinks choices also
Som guests a bit noisy but were quiet when asked to shut up

"The pool was not so crowded. During our stay, one morning we had occupied the pool by ourselves. "Read full review
